The Rover SDI 3.5 was and still is one of my all time fave cars !! i only like the older 70s-80s cars, new cars have no shape or character at all !! they are to disposable..
You are not wrong, whats more we can do 0 - 60 in sub 3.3 seconds with Nigel Deans Rover Rpi Powered Dax, quicker than Lambos at fraction of the price Thats not Grandma stuff in my book
Also, the Rover V8 - what an engine! So reliable, so tunable, sounds so bloody good... Richard Hammond once called it the Queen Mother of car engines... I'd disagree. Once people started tuning them, it became the Lemmy Kilmister of car engines!
The SD1 was, when it was new, a horrid, unreliable, badly-built POS. Even so, I still think that the Ferrari/Maserati-inspired shape has stood the test of time and this one, well, let's not even go into what it does for me... one day I'm going to have one like it. Might get the live axle out and bung in a Jag or BMW IRS, but there's something that really appeals about a 5-door, 5-seat, 5-litre hatchback! =D
That's just how it is here. We get perhaps 6 weeks of great sunshine a year, and the rest is grey and damp. That's why we need cars like this to cheer us up!
My old man had a couple of these when i was a kid the 3.5 version, he still loves them and when he gets to see this it is guaranteed to put a smile on his face!
Wow the Clarkson V8 still gives me a hard on! no matter how many times I look at it!
What happened to it? is it still in one piece/
What sort of money would it take to build one like it? I had 4 Sdi's back in the day but all straight ones. tho one was race tuned by a Police mechanic for me,had 145mph out of it in 1986.
Sadly the car was broken up soon after filming as the engine and many other parts where borrowed from other cars we had. the shell has long since been scrapped, how bad is that Sorry
Who the fuck said Rover back in the days didn't make an awesome car. I usually like little cars with 4 banger engines that revs and revs with nippy cornering. But mmm, 5.2 litre V8? Umm, yes?
they did, well sort of, they built the SD1 Vitesse, a pretty quick car which was raced succesfully by TWR in the European touringcar championship against BMW 635csi and the Volvo 242Turbo
Sounds beastly, looks wicked, and goes like a bastard. What a car. Makes that Nova look shit... oh wait. It is. Most were although there were exceptions. But that Rover is just something else
Awsome car, sounds the tits. Topgear should put Clarkson in a an unlimited banger with 30 or so other lunies on track then lets see how cocky he is.......
Rover never made a car worthy of promotion in recent times did they though? MG on the other hand, (owned by Rover) he liked the MGF, oh and the Supercar they made before going bust? He liked that too.
....some say that he has an ego the size of jupiter.....and that his mullet was disolved by sustained brut abuse.....all we know is, they call him the minister for transport......
I have a road going version, and it is a pig to handle, god knows what this would have been like. I wish I had the money to build somthing like this, there was some serious time and money put into this. Where did it go? Who owns it? AND THE SOUND..................

Why did you think we got an empire, soon as you could sail a ship around the world, we were off. Just had to get away from the food and weather.
It's why we are such an aggressive militaristic nation, nothing else to live for.

But really, was the whole car bought and modified to the challenge's £5k budget?

The 5.2 was created using the later cross bolted 4.6 block.
We have now managed a 5.5 litre Morgan which we will have footage of soon.
