If you want an even test then companions should have been in same formation as cataphracts and cataphracts should have charged instead of just sitting their firing arrows even after the melee started. The romans had 6000 cavalry during the battle of heraclea ( 280 BC )
So they had cavalry mostly equites.
They got Owned by the heitaroi.
