Look at the American m249 saw. nearly a 90% copy of the mg 42 and 34.
another example for famous and great copy is the russian ak47...a very good copy of the German Stg44.

The MG2 certainly had a higher rate of fire, but it used a smaller caliber round, when in that war machine guns were needed for their large caliber and firepower. It certainly was a terrifying and daunting gun (the allies even had training videos to deal with the psychological trauma of that buzz) but the browning simply was more useful

@TheGIJoe01 I think the MG42 is a bit more brilliant, as it continues to be uses as the MG3 and has proved to be a good design, but "better" is to much a personal opinion as plenty of machineguns, for instance the FN MAG family, are also of a very good design. Don't forget that the Belgians also excel at weapon development.
@TheGIJoe01 There's no way you can say the MG 34 was a good combat weapon! It had the most complicated action ever seen on a firearm until it's design and even since. I would detail the action here but it is too long to fit into 2 comments. If you want I can send an overview of the action too you in a message. It was in essence, a scaled down artillery piece using a locking mechanism from the 1860s. The MG 42 was an excellent combat weapon, many post war weapons were based on its design.
@untmortadela The MG34 was prone to breaking due to the over complicated locking mechanism and inverted roller bolt-firing pin assembly and was difficult to repair without the right equipment. The MG42 was a much superior weapon, that is why it's internal mechanism gas been used on many weapons and continues to be, whereas the MG34 has not been developed since. If you like I could send you a description of the MG34s mechanism in a message but it is to long to fit into a comment.

@Telamon8 the GAU8 is a gatling gun and it's not gas operated, it uses an electrical system.
So otally different engineering, you can't compare it. Also, the GAU8 was developed during the 70's, while the MG42 appeared earlier.

@TheGIJoe01 I disagree, the mg42 is certainly a good machine gun, but the American made Browning 50 caliber was much more practical for the same job in that era. The MG2 certainly had a higher rate of fire, but it used a smaller caliber round, when in that war machine guns were needed for their large caliber and firepower. It certainly was a terrifying and daunting gun (the allies even had training videos to deal with the psychological trauma of that buzz) but the browning simply was more useful

@TheGIJoe01 I think the MG42 is a bit more brilliant, as it continues to be uses as the MG3 and has proved to be a good design, but "better" is to much a personal opinion as plenty of machineguns, for instance the FN MAG family, are also of a very good design. Don't forget that the Belgians also excel at weapon development.

@TheGIJoe01 There's no way you can say the MG 34 was a good combat weapon! It had the most complicated action ever seen on a firearm until it's design and even since. I would detail the action here but it is too long to fit into 2 comments. If you want I can send an overview of the action too you in a message. It was in essence, a scaled down artillery piece using a locking mechanism from the 1860s. The MG 42 was an excellent combat weapon, many post war weapons were based on its design.

@untmortadela The MG34 was prone to breaking due to the over complicated locking mechanism and inverted roller bolt-firing pin assembly and was difficult to repair without the right equipment. The MG42 was a much superior weapon, that is why it's internal mechanism gas been used on many weapons and continues to be, whereas the MG34 has not been developed since. If you like I could send you a description of the MG34s mechanism in a message but it is to long to fit into a comment.

@dragon3600000 Well, it's a fundementally different weapon, because it's design made it way less prone to jamming. And it uses a completely different caliber of ammunition. But yeah dude, it's DEFINITELY *inspired* by the MG42. I was just pointing out that the '42 isn't the "best" anymore.

And also, look at the guns, first. The MG-42 fired a 7.92x57mm round AND it fired them slightly slower. The MG-3 fires a more streamlined 7.62x51mm round, and the rate of fire is not only faster, but just as accurate if not more then the '42.
So yeah. They're NOT the same.

I shoot both and I know know the technic of both. sincerly the mg3 JUST HAVE a slower firerate to increase the reliability. also the barrel is a composition of different metals like titanium. were actually shooting with mg3s from 1960 and earlier. yeah the caliber is 7.62x51mm, its NATO caliber. before germany was involved in the nato we still had 7.92. damn -.-

I know the MG42 and the MG3, of course more the MG3 but there are nearly no differences between the both MG's. In the MG3 are better materials envolved like the locking device or the gun barrell. its also not so faster then the MG42 because of the slower spring. expect for this 2 partgroubs, everything is the same like in the MG42. Thats was I told you dude.
