  • This is a beautiful song! I go to a music school, and I play the Kontrabas, and this song! I Łove this soooooooooo much! <3 :D

  • That is a assembly, that is not true the audio one of that video, as they think that a musician of that level and that orchestra is going to touch thus?

  • @mgstella watch?v=kEPERXpOqiU&feature=related

  • Sorry, I´have no idea who is that guy.

  • Who was the double bass soloist??? It was freaking horribly out of tune and slightly rushing.

  • Who is the bassist?

  • Don't jugde the bass solo overhasty - it sounds exactly as intended by the composer. The composer did not ask for a double bass solo that sounds like a cello. Mahler wrote in his score that the bass solo should sound like someone playing in the backyard of a drinking hole. That is why he wrote a bass, and not a cello solo. Even at Bernstein's time auditions were very strict. Don't believe that the bassist couldn't have played it better - he played it that way because Bernstein wanted it so.

  • True. That's how Bernstein's conducting tells him to play. Only that I would be more discreet on the intonation - I don't think there's any excuse for playing that second figure flat.

  • very interesting!

  • @maiarho

On my mind , as the regular double bass refused to play as Bernstein asked him to do , so Bernstein went by night in the backyard of a tavern ( Mahler's father himself had a tavern) , and he found that man playing some drinking songs .

He just told him to play Frère Jacques , wich lyrics are "dormez-vous ? Sonnez les matines ! ding dung dong "

That's why it's so perfect , but may be too perfect .

Mahler love to mix the worlds ...but we are not used to.

  • This is one of the most pressuring moments for any double bassist, to play such an easy solo, yet stay in tune especially during the last phrase which calls for an octave shift on the G string which can be very difficult in a live situation.

  • Jesus Christ!!! How did Lenny let that happen? That is seriously worse than I have ever played that on the worst audition I've ever done. Christ.

    Fre-re-SHIIIFT NOISE-jacq-SHIFT NOISE-ue

  • Horrible como toca este contrabajista!

  • I agree. Not at all the level it MUST be today.

  • what are you talking about ? this solo is meant to be played that way. Someone said that if Malher would have wanted it to be played in a beautiful way, he would have written it for the cello. I've never heard it played in a "nice" way.

  • You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

  • I'm with you guys, that was terribly played.

  • That bass player's solo was unacceptable(I'm sad that was the best the WP could produce for a bass solo). The bassoonist was pretty good though.

  • I agree with you, :).

    Thank you

  • OK- Bernstein is standing on the podium and he cant hear a lone double bass playing right?

because he's a real dumbass- bernstein doesn't know anything about Mahler, or Music, right?

you utter idiots... Your's truely, Solo Kontrabass SHMFO

  • @thedbassist That is exactly how Mahler wanted it though. He didn't want a bass to sound like a cello. He wanted to a bass to sound like a bass.

  • @samdajellybeenie14 the bass sounds much better than cello, no like that solo on de vid

  • surely, you meant "WP" "Wiener Philharmoniker" not "WPO". If you insist on the "O", shouldn't it be "VPO"?

  • weeeena!

    jajajaj

  • hola, no tengo ese video. ¿Tu puedes conseguirlo?
