And before the fan boys start yapping, I have both sitting in my garage right now, ask me which one is more reliable. It isn't the Polaris.
I just bought a Touring 850, i love it! These Grizzly boys are an interesting bunch. Go out and ride any ATV, just ride something. I would have more fun on a 250cc 4x2 than most of these babies would on any big bore. I got the 850 because I like the comfort and it has a very good 4x4 system. My wife and I also wanted a 2 seater. That rules out the Grizzly. It was also nice to support an American company, though that was just a bonus.

a bigbore if im not mistaken is anything over 600cc per cyl... so if the sportsman is 850 2cyl then its 425cc each which IMO removes it from the "big bore" catagory... the griz is 686cc single jug
im pretty sure if both atvs are given equal oppertunity to perform they will do just fine in real life scenerios id rather see them perform in various terrain "sand, dirt, grass, gravel" where it is likely to be used

Sorry. I have posted many many many times in here...I even added a text box in the video to explain that at filming, Yamaha didn't make a 550..therefore...the 450 was all Polaris had available. It just gets old...I apologize.

Polaris sucks dick look closely at the 4wd test the guy creeps up to the ramp like he was waiting for 4 wheel drive to kick in, and on the engine braking one you cans see the front suspension lower like he hit the foot brake
I like both machines, but if you ever drive or ride anything with the downhill decent option, it actually slows you down threw the transfer case, and transmission in vehicles, or in the transmision for atv's. Thats what makes it appear to hit the brakes, because in away it is! But he is not actually touching the brakes at all! I believe you can turn that option off if you don' t want it on also!
After owning 2 Polaris 500 sportsman, I just don't want another Polaris. The dang suspension parts are completely worn out. Will require $1,500 for parts alone. This is with very moderate usage and 1500 miles. Most farmers in my area have been going to the Grizzly and all are very happy. My next one will be a Yamaha.

I have a question, on the 4x4 demonstration of the yamaha in regular 4x4 mode shouldn't the wheel that is not slipping get power to it and not the one that is slipping??? I thought that's how limited slip was supposed to work?

Has Polaris won any of the big bore shootouts done by unbias magazines? I have yet to see one. Mainly because they're all won by the Grizzly. I do know that the Polaris is 150lbs heavier than the Grizzly stock, so you'll need the extra horses to keep up. I would preffer to have the Polaris beefy axles over Yamahas, but that's it.

@atvobsession Show me on video something that A Polaris can do that a Grizzly can't. I don't care if you use a 10,000cc Sportsman and a 450cc Grizzly. I enjoy having big bore power at my disposal, but haven't HAD to use it yet. Believe me, I've tried. Check out my vids. I ride with guys that run 450cc Kodiaks and they can for the most part go where I do with a few exceptions. Soggy bottom boys run 500 can-ams with 32 inch meats.
My friend Angelo uses the Kodiak 450. It works really well. The only places it has a hard time, where we don't, is big rocks where ground clearance counts. Other than that....it's fine. I'm not one of the guys that says Brand X SUCKS!! Only 2 brands don't work well Rock crawling.....1) Can Am (the diff lock sucks) and Honda (it has no diff lock).

I couldn't count on two hands how many times I've winches out, dragged home, fixed on trail a Polaris. Since the 700's debut in 07 it's won every big bore shootout in every magazine...for a good reason too.

Its an advertisement for POLARIS, not yamaha. Of course they will make the sportman look like the better quad. I never trust these kinda advertisements because they can make almost any atv look way better than any other atv.
Polaris is a very comforatable machine, but that is about it. Yamaha is way better than the Polaris 800, they just cheated on the Yamaha; like the engin breaking, give me a break, no Yamaha will go that fast down a hill. I hate these labratory tests, why not test them in the real world, seriously, Polaris should really get a pair.
If yamaha made a bike bigger than a 700, I'm sure Polaris would have used that in the comparison. But because yamaha's biggest bike is the 700 single, they compared it to polaris's biggest bike, the 850 twin.

Totally different Quad. There are some good points in that video. The old style engine braking (it's not the same in 2010), the different bolts types (which I hate). But the 4 wheel drive system beef, just isn't accurate. I get filmed in extreme ATV DVD (mountains and mud series) and I do the most extreme technical rock crawling that you can do, and the Polaris locking system is the best that I've ridden.
That's a funny video. I've seen the Polaris go through some stuff. But so did my grizzly. Type in Yamaha Grizzly 700 vs Polaris sportsman 800 and watch that shootout. Polaris is smokin belts left and right and the engine braking sucks.

A lot of it is true though..Besides the fact that the sled pull\race contest is 150cc difference..All the rest is right on the money. Grizzlys have poor diff locks, not all that great engine braking, and less susp travel & not as good of a ride. If you plan to mud your grizzly, I'd choose another quad. Maybe not polaris since its 174 lbs more then the griz, but..That diff lock over-ride gets old pretty fast.

I like both machines, but if you ever drive or ride anything with the downhill decent option, it actually slows you down threw the transfer case, and transmission in vehicles, or in the transmision for atv's. Thats what makes it appear to hit the brakes, because in away it is! But he is not actually touching the brakes at all! I believe you can turn that option off if you don' t want it on also!

After owning 2 Polaris 500 sportsman, I just don't want another Polaris. The dang suspension parts are completely worn out. Will require $1,500 for parts alone. This is with very moderate usage and 1500 miles. Most farmers in my area have been going to the Grizzly and all are very happy. My next one will be a Yamaha.

I have a question, on the 4x4 demonstration of the yamaha in regular 4x4 mode shouldn't the wheel that is not slipping get power to it and not the one that is slipping??? I thought that's how limited slip was supposed to work?

Has Polaris won any of the big bore shootouts done by unbias magazines? I have yet to see one. Mainly because they're all won by the Grizzly. I do know that the Polaris is 150lbs heavier than the Grizzly stock, so you'll need the extra horses to keep up. I would preffer to have the Polaris beefy axles over Yamahas, but that's it.

@atvobsession Show me on video something that A Polaris can do that a Grizzly can't. I don't care if you use a 10,000cc Sportsman and a 450cc Grizzly. I enjoy having big bore power at my disposal, but haven't HAD to use it yet. Believe me, I've tried. Check out my vids. I ride with guys that run 450cc Kodiaks and they can for the most part go where I do with a few exceptions. Soggy bottom boys run 500 can-ams with 32 inch meats.

My friend Angelo uses the Kodiak 450. It works really well. The only places it has a hard time, where we don't, is big rocks where ground clearance counts. Other than that....it's fine. I'm not one of the guys that says Brand X SUCKS!! Only 2 brands don't work well Rock crawling.....1) Can Am (the diff lock sucks) and Honda (it has no diff lock).

Watch my video on my ATVOBSESSION channel...Last Legal Ride-Switchback trail Part 2. You mess up on that trail, and it's 2000 feet down to the bottom. You would be dead, and your ATV would be a garage sale of parts.

Wait a minute. Both manufactures have vids about each other; in which i honestly don't like. I don't like bias opinions on anyones part. What i can say its, i have owned and still own a few Yamahas that have been through some pretty rough stuff and they both run like new. On the other hand i have a few ridding buddies that own Polaris and they are always left behind because their quads are broke. I'm not saying that one is better than the other; i'm just stating the facts on my experience.

the 4x4 test was a bs test when your in the woods you should already be aware that you need 4x4 on the auto 4x4 from polaris is just a luxury... like any dealer will say there product is better.... i would love to have this polaris but i also would love the grizzly these test are obviously done by polaris its way bias

Polaris is a very comforatable machine, but that is about it. Yamaha is way better than the Polaris 800, they just cheated on the Yamaha; like the engin breaking, give me a break, no Yamaha will go that fast down a hill. I hate these labratory tests, why not test them in the real world, seriously, Polaris should really get a pair.

If yamaha made a bike bigger than a 700, I'm sure Polaris would have used that in the comparison. But because yamaha's biggest bike is the 700 single, they compared it to polaris's biggest bike, the 850 twin.

Totally different Quad. There are some good points in that video. The old style engine braking (it's not the same in 2010), the different bolts types (which I hate). But the 4 wheel drive system beef, just isn't accurate. I get filmed in extreme ATV DVD (mountains and mud series) and I do the most extreme technical rock crawling that you can do, and the Polaris locking system is the best that I've ridden.

i f*ckin hate polaris i had one it was all plastic and weigh a sh*t ton i now have a grizzly 700 i run the s*it out of my bike and never had the hot light come on and that bulls*it with the four wheel drive. yamaha has the best diff lock out of all the atvs, i would race that 850 with my grizzly and all i have dune to it is an aftermarket cdi. i would rape that polaris and if yamaha ever comes out with a 800cc or 850cc bike polaris would get shut down, they wouldn't have a chance.

wait on the 4x4 test a grizzly could have made it over that in 2wd but they had those rolling bars so the back wheels didnt get any traction... and i know it will go over something like that in 2wd cause i go over a tree bigger than that in my 550 grizzly

A lot of it is true though..Besides the fact that the sled pull\race contest is 150cc difference..All the rest is right on the money. Grizzlys have poor diff locks, not all that great engine braking, and less susp travel & not as good of a ride. If you plan to mud your grizzly, I'd choose another quad. Maybe not polaris since its 174 lbs more then the griz, but..That diff lock over-ride gets old pretty fast.
