another big story the elected president told - we all had great hopes of this country making things right - oops! Fooled again - its worse now! Someday you too will be in a Gitmo and then we will all see how this is wrong. Levin and McCain wrote the bill today. We are serfs and have no chance of escaping the NWO fate...now we know what the body bags are for.
@keldius - Yes, sadly many civilians died, HOWEVER, where do you get your figures from? Millions of women and children were not killed by the U.S. Totally false. Every life is precious but the numbers of "women and children" accidentally killed as the result of US actions in Iraq and Afghanistan number in the hundreds. Even the Iraqi and Afghanistan governments confrim this. Don't forget the hundreds of thousands of middle east citizens that American soldiers have saved and helped.
@variablast: Yes, but that's not the reality of the human world view. Every 4 years the president is elected based on symbols - not reality. Do you know anyone who has a real reality?Everyone has their own reality. Yours is different from mine. So we use symbols to navigate reality.
In my reality, Gitmo's a symbol of the worst a country can be. By closing it, trying alleged terrorists (and compensating the tortured victims who aren't guilty - at least as much as the people who turned them in for money), we can live closer to the values we think we say we live by.
He clearly wants to get rid of Gauntanamo - and with fanfare! It's great!
As he said, once you move these guys onto US soil, you have to deal with them by the rule of law! Something I think many, many in DC have forgotten about even though they are almost all lawyers.
Another good reason to bulldoze Guantanamo is that it will open up the rest of the island to development by its citizens. Currently Guantanamo virtually pinches off the eastern tip of Cuba from the rest, and occupies a major port.
I think the Bastille was a viseral symbol to the French people who were at times thrown into it but Guantanamo is not to the American people. Torture to them would be no texting or TV for 3 days.
LOL! "no texting or TV for 3 days". You're right. Probably most wouldn't even know what Gitmo is.
Actually, there were very few prisoners, some 50, in the Bastille, but yes, it was a visceral symbol because of the secrecy about the place. However, American citizens have been thrown into Gitmo. Half of the non-citizens are there because the person who turned them in got a reward they can retire on. If you're white, you probably don't have to worry about it - yet.
Terrorism is largely symbolic. The 9/11 bombers sought to attack the symbol of American power. By tearing down the WTC they symbolically tore down the very center of American power (ie wealth through capitalism). They could have targeted an easier target. The US could have never been brought down by "small" terrorsit attacks (or by any organized military attack for that matter), but they could make a statement that they are not invincible.

I would rather a plain chocolate cake than a beautifully decorated loaf of shit.
Does this guy want to destroy the Guantanamo system or does he just want to relocate it?

Nothing he said seemed to suggest to me that he wanted to try them in the normal US court system, but I hope your right.

Now we have no idea where they take the victims of rendition.
We seem to have made Gitmo into a symbol and ignore the torture that happened there.
Waterboarding was one of the reasons it was OK to drop a nuclear bomb on Japan, yet just swept under the carpet these days.

The comparison of the Bastille is a very poor one I think.

@Krifko USA are not invincible that everyone know it of course small "terrorist attack" can't take USA down
but still USA can't take the world down neither(without having repercussion on his own territory or interest for the matters )
