If it is allowed to spread it can blend with other viruses and mutate, possibly into a lethal form like bird flu. These pandemic flus can often kill the young and healthy due to ones own immune system essentially killing them with chemicals called cytokines. Is another flu like the spanish flu a risk we really want to take? Worth a few $bn to mitigate that risk I think.

I suspect that there are thousands of people that had swine flu in Mexico, but because it wasn't being looked for (and possibly wasn't that bad) it wasn't noticed until they were able to link the deaths. I think (as well as hope) people are over-reacting.

TF incorrectly stated that humans have never faced Swine Flu before. He then contradicted himself by saying that we have faced it before and gave an ambiguous, inaccurate explanation of that outbreak. He also cited a Flu outbreak in 1920, but that epidemic was infamously from 1918 (Hope I don't start another fight).

Comparisons of the Swine Flue to Spanish Influenza are ridiculous. People died of Spanish Influenza because it happened before the birth of modern medicine. The only way Swine Flu would present a problem to us is if we didn't have the major medical reform that happened in the mid 20th century.
Sorry but that's not true. Antibiotics are virtually useless against viral infections. Mass inoculations would be difficult, expensive and time-consuming. In addition during the last flu epidemic in the seventies over 100 people were killed from inoculation side-effects.

I agree with u there Bush is a massive failure and a waste of a presidency, and i am willing to give Obama time to fix the economy. My problem with Obama comes in the fact that he has passed quite possibly the most wasteful spending bill in the history of mankind. Our country now is in an enormous amount of debt. America spent more money in that spending bill than from any other point from 1776- 1980. The only thing he has done so far is wreck our economy even worse.

Do you actually know anything about immunology whatsoever? Swine flu is an entirely new strain unlike seasonal flu. If it is allowed to spread it can blend with other viruses and mutate, possibly into a lethal form like bird flu. These pandemic flus can often kill the young and healthy due to ones own immune system essentially killing them with chemicals called cytokines. Is another flu like the spanish flu a risk we really want to take? Worth a few $bn to mitigate that risk I think.

as of May 4, 2009, 27 ppl have died from swine flu worldwide. many more have gotten sick, but nowhere near the number you mentioned. also, rarely noted, is that the vast majority of deaths have been infants and elderly. i'm not saying 'who cares about the old and young, rather they tend to be the immuno-comprimised. they suffer greater % of deaths in every disease. to put things in perspective, 115 ppl die EVERY DAY in the U.S. alone due to auto accidents. 27 is nothing to panic about.

I suspect that there are thousands of people that had swine flu in Mexico, but because it wasn't being looked for (and possibly wasn't that bad) it wasn't noticed until they were able to link the deaths. I think (as well as hope) people are over-reacting.

Hate to bring up ThunderF00t again, but he made a video about Swine Flu. I must say, though ThunderF00t is quite intelligent, you were actually right about his weakness in history. TF incorrectly stated that humans have never faced Swine Flu before. He then contradicted himself by saying that we have faced it before and gave an ambiguous, inaccurate explanation of that outbreak. He also cited a Flu outbreak in 1920, but that epidemic was infamously from 1918 (Hope I don't start another fight).

Sorry, I was basing my info on what I learned long before we relied on tv and the internet for education. Perhaps Polio deaths were on the decline when the vaccine was found? I know a polio survivor that lived in an iron lung for over a year when she was 19. I am neither for nor against the pharma corps. I have worked for several large corporations but have not seen a conspiracy to do anything but effectively manage large groups of people to provide products/services at a profit.

Let's face the truth, Senator Alren "the spectator" Specter has not created or contirbuted anything of substance to the Senate in his entire political career! I am confident he will lose the 2010 race because the Republicans could never count on his support and neither will the liberals! Downplaying the seriousness of the Influenza H1N1 is just ridiculous. 100 people in the US have it as of two days ago? And that statement makes this situation not serious? Jesus F-ing Christ! Comparisons of the Swine Flue to Spanish Influenza are ridiculous. People died of Spanish Influenza because it happened before the birth of modern medicine. The only way Swine Flu would present a problem to us is if we didn't have the major medical reform that happened in the mid 20th century.

Sorry but that's not true. Antibiotics are virtually useless against viral infections. Mass inoculations would be difficult, expensive and time-consuming. In addition during the last flu epidemic in the seventies over 100 people were killed from inoculation side-effects.

Sorry, but I wasn't talking about antibiotics, dolt. I was talking about the practice of doctors washing hands before treating patients. It's the innovation of medical hygienics that has saved us far and above anything in past eras. And so you know, somebody invented a protein coating that prevents viruses from corrupting cells.
You should really research the history of medicine and current medical breakthroughs before going on the internet to be a douchebag.

Doctors washing hands was common practice prior to WWI. None of the other things you mentioned are likely to prevent a pandemic, merely decrease its deathtoll on rich people in developed countries.

Yeah the swine flu does have the potential to be destructive, but the chances of that happening very rapidly, are slim. THERE ARE 6 BILLION PEOPLE ON EARTH. While I think that we shouldn't panic, I also don't think that it is a light matter, as it could be very hard to contain, given enough opportunity. Other then that, I think that this is a great news show, they should air this on the TV.

They voted dem until LBJ passed civil rights laws in 1964. They left the Dem after that because they love Jesus but hate people. The GOP welcomes them in and it's paying for that mistake now.
