  • these guys look french

  • Thumbs up if FaZe Mala brought you here!

  • THIS IS MUSIC!

  • "Bach's music is the only argument proving the creation of the Universe cannot be regarded a complete failure"

"without Bach, God would be a complete second rate figure"

Both Cioran quotes, both absolutly true

  • @JkBHx i'm sorry, but this is overstated, even blasphemously overstated, and Bach himself, as a devout believer, would be the first to say so

  • What is the name of de CD ? I don't want it, I NEED it for my psychological balance !

  • anybody else watching this for a music appreciation class?

  • Magnificent!

Praise GOD for giving me the hearing to enjoy such beauty.

  • this is magnificat ! ! ! !

all those that work this Magnificat "gratia plena" we would say

and certainly Bach would applaud too

  • 0.07 jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaj

  • boring music at times....

  • Magnificat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gorgeous!

  • @2partsWhimsy1partWry I think that's no use, because even if these "stars" understood that this is music, they wouldn't change their own style, as they want to make money :-D this music is too complicated for the bulk, it's not for the radio that's running all the time but nobody really listens to.

  • @2partsWhimsy1partWry haha when i first begin to read your comment i thought " another stupido coment of laddy gaga, oh why dont you liste and shut up," but when a finished reading your coment, i laughed so much. YOU are completly right xD.

If i wrote somthing wrong, sorry i dont know english at all. =)

  • @2partsWhimsy1partWry Any music performed with sincerity is music. One style is not better than another, it's a different method of expression. I study classical voice at one of the leading universities in Canada, but I still love sitting down with a couple musician friends and jamming out some blues rock. Either way, the music speaks for itself.

Personally, I couldn't care less about Ke$sha or Pitbull, but I believe Lady Gaga is an artist who is very connected to her music. Just my $.02

  • 0:45 I didn't know Steve Carell played the Sackbut so well

  • @patrickbateman7 ha! I just learned a new word, one i can't wait to use!

  • Harnoncourt's interpretation and passionate delivery are absolutely exquisite...I must have watched this video 200 times already but cannot get enough of it

  • That elegant lady behind Harnoncourt is enjoying it as much as I am! I'd love to be in her place wondering this magnifique performance.

  • In my modest opinion, a great choir! Bravi

  • Sublime!

  • the amount of times I have listened to all of these Magnificat videos- so addictive! thanks for uploading

  • Magnifique!

  • A bit slower than Gardiner's version, but still magnificently performed!

  • Buen aporte ;)

  • difficilmente Harnoncourt delude, soprattutto con Bach!

  • Nick is still the man. Lovely phrasing in the choir singing Ma-ag-ne-e-e-e-e-e-eef-i-cat! And he looks happy for goodness sake!

  • Love the period instruments!

  • If only I could praise the Lord so beautifully!

  • If only I could praise the Lord so beautifuly!

  • Koopman or Harnoncourt?

  • @jepcorpYou hear both in comparison? I do. The better is the enemy of the good (Das Bessere ist der Feind des Guten). And Harnoncourt is the best, the master.

  • Is that Bernd Lanner on baroque timpani?

  • The best version I have ever watched here on YT

  • O good, i see empty chairs!!! Such a fine interpretation of this extraordinary piece and EMPTY SEATS - i do not understand some things :-)

  • @LifeforArt - The supreme irony ... maybe the best Magnificat EVER performed and there are empty seats in the audience!!!! Perhaps those tickets where bought in advance by bankers (as they usually do) and afterwards thought they might get a better sleep at home ...

Anyway, even if I would die to assist to such a one-of-a-kind live performance, I praise the Lord that microphones, cameras and such good sound engineers where present! They filled the empty chairs, giving us back the perfect Bach!!

  • @PetreJunior And one of the bassists looks like a clone of Jon Corzine, the former CEO of Goldman Sachs and of MF Global, and a one time American politician, who served as the 54th Governor of New Jersey for one term. . . LOLOL!!!!!

  • Yeah. Players and choir combined seem to beat the number in the audience. Let's give it the benefit of the doubt: It's quite possible this was a recording performance, to which a select number of persons were invited. Hence the few empty seats.

  • Magnificat anima mea Dominum et exultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo.

  • Harnoncourt loves his life!

  • ¡Magnifico!...

  • I love how the musicians play this lively, they seem to be enjoy it very much, which makes me enjoy it even more.

  • I LOVE IT!!!!! Gorgeous!!!

  • This is almost painfully slow, no true exuberence!

  • No one has the passion of Harnoncourt! AMAZING!

  • bravo troppo bravo...prefrisco meno tedesco e più italiano...capisci?

  • Does anyone know if the Orchestra members are playing on period instruments?

  • They are. The easiest things to spot are the wooden flutes and the valveless trumpets.

  • This and Ton Koopman's rendition are the best performances of the magnificat!

  • "she is the daughter of her son" Dante

  • Vergine madre, figlia del tuo figlio...

  • yes from the Paradiso ?I forget

  • Paradiso, Canto XXXIII.

  • @Jaquy Thank you!

  • Very nice textures.

I do, however, admit to really missing the trills on the clarino trumpet parts!

  • xaire Maria Theotokos! Lord Jesus have mercy on me a sinner

  • OH!

  • OMG!!!!

  • i played this song in my orchester today in a concert...its cool :D

  • This video just made my day... the chorus looks so funny. although the music is very good!

  • Since the first time I heard this, it always sounded as if it was written in 6/8, and not 3/4... especially at this tempo - which I like, the same way I may like a faster tempo. Both tempos have merits.

  • Comment removed

  • For me, the "tempo" in Bach´s Music is not really important. Above it, we can find all the essence of His Art. Magnificat, Bach: You are always in my heart. Thank you.

  • Bravo

  • pardon me..would you happen to have any grey poupon?

  • cute but not really relevant

  • @ giglrcute ? relevant why not watch Lagy Gaga

  • This really touchs my heart...Is amazing!!

  • This recording is really too slow! It seems to be standing on one place. I'm not one who needs an incredible fast tempo, but this is too much!

And it seems to be very uninspired (every note is played as there is no connection to the other ones) --> well it's Harnoncourt conducting Bach Vocalworks! He was never the best in that! He is a better Handel conductor!

  • How fast would you like it to be - and can you recommend a recording that is at the faster tempo and which retains the clarity of this one from choir, soloists and orchestra?

  • Well let's see Hickox, Suzuki, Hengelbrock, Koopman, Gardiner and these were just the conductors who use choirs. All of them about 30 seconds faster than this recording and musical better and also the choirs are perfect!

McCreesh is too fast in my opinion (1 minute faster than Harnoncourt) but he uses just the 5 singers as "choir".

  • This tempo does seem slow compared to Koopman's and others.

  • beautiful

  • Bravo! I like what Maestro Harnoncourt did! It's majestic! It's a bomba!!!!

I'm proud of all of you!

    God bless!!

  • Harnoncourt's expressions are always such a show!

  • @AChtChtCht

who cares aout his expressions, listen to the music!

  • Some people are only satisfied with 120 bpm.

  • Record it, speed it up to the speed you want, get the tablets you require, and bob's your uncle!

  • I like it. You can absorb it more. It sounds more majestic.

  • Who are the soloists? Where is it? What orchestra and choir is it, please?

  • Christine Schäfer, soprano

    Anna Korondi, soprano

    Bernarda Fink, alto

    Ian Bostridge, tenor

    Christopher Maltman, baritone

    Concentus Musicus Vienna, Nikolaus Harnoncourt

    Arnold Schoenberg Choir, Erwin Ortner

2000, Kloster Melk Benedictine Monastery, Austria.

  • Many thanks for answering so quickly.

A wonderful performance by a great team.

  • I love the fact they used period instruments! Wonderful playing.

  • Wonderful, but hard to top the richness of the Helmuth Rilling vinyl recording. Personal preference and primacy, I suppose.

  • tears of joy on my face

  • Magnificat!!!!

  • I love his face! XD

  • What is it about some music that moves us to tears? I too cannot help sob with joy when I hear this magnificent piece. It's a perfect blending of the human and divine spirit.

  • quelle splendeur,bach à son sommet !

  • sencillamnte magnifico

  • Superb ******Gene*****

  • What is the building?

  • Such a vibrant and resonant piece...Oh it's just marvellous!

  • When BACH expressed His Mind so Classic in MAGNIFICAT to HEAVENLY MOM, my mind more correctly follows MOM'S RIGHT INTENTION to PRAISE OUR FATHER: I Know HIM Better Than Before! HER Children Pay Tributes to HER MAGNIFICENTLY As Well. HOW GREAT IS OUR MOM? So MANY THANKS To The Band & Singers + jormundgard.

  • Slower is almost always better when exposing counterpoint.

  • I agree, but not 100% Consider Bach's BWV 1048 first movement, his Brandenburg Concerto in G. It's fast ,yet it's easy to discern all counterpoints.

BWV 140 first chorale is also an example of fast counterpoint, but that particular cantata can go either way, fast or slow.

But, like you, I love to hear every part!

  • Tempo not too slow! Just right! We, Bach Chor, just performed this one but did it a tick faster. Think of what anima mia means. It cant race! Like Canatata 36. Secut locotus est is usually done to fast. Thaose who understand Latin (therefore meaning) adjust tempo accordingly. This a great interpretation! Majestic! Danke!

  • Very well said! I always hear this Magnificat fast and joyous. Love the period instruments, just brilliant

  • I see that this is baroque ansambl, but which? I never saw this people before.

P.S. Tempos are too slow... :S

  • simply beautiful

  • excuse me?

  • are the strings baroque? they seem to overpower the original instruments in the wind and brass.

  • ahh too slow

  • Espléndido Harnoncourt,roza la perfección.

  • One thing is worser than to die: Not able to listen to Bachs music anymore.........

  • Maybe not worse. But just as bad ;)

  • quelle splendeur! harnoncourt atteint la perfection!

  • ... we then had to perform the final concert in a massive church with a full orchestra without rehearsal. it went without a hitch I recall thanks mainly to our magnificent music master - probably long since departed - Jock Roberts.

  • This takes me back to 1974 when I performed this with (my) grammar schoo, and the girls' high schoo,. choir Yes, they were the days when schools were not as they are today. We had to learn our parts in a tiny classroom round an upright piano - the girls did likewise in their school -

  • Wonderful...Harnoncourt is a very involved and emotive conductor.

  • genius!

  • The performqance ethereal, the facial gestures positively hyperthyroidian.

  • I prefer Harnoncourt's tempo to Koopman's.Such an excellent performance, powerful but still have time to enjoy the richness of Bach's extraordinary music.

  • YES! This is better than Koopman's version. He always seems to be trying to beat the clock when either conducting or performing himself. It blurs the notes and the words become inarticulate. I don't detract from Koopman's ability but I just prefer this version.

  • I think Bach, generally, must be played more slowly than it is... it's such a beautiful music one need to hear every little detail. When I was young, I loved speed... I now realise that slow is beautiful !

  • U should listen to kkopman with this. He races through the whole thing! Compared to koopman, harnoncourt is moderate!

  • agree with that. To my taste Koopman's interpretation was very weak. It seems to me koopman wasn't really a great conductor.

  • Totally agreed. But honestly every Bach conductor before or since pales in comparison to Harnoncourt. Harnoncourt showed us that Bach could be just as rich an emotional experience as any Romantic composer. As hard as it is now to believe, without Harnoncourt, Bach may still have had little more than a cult following.

  • Low be it spoken! I'm getting stick from everywhere up there for saying milder things than that!...

  • Does this conductor have a version of Bach's Mass in B Minor?

  • Yes, there are recordings from 1968 (with Boys' Choir) and 1986.

  • This is an excellent interpretation of the Magnificat. The slower tempo really makes the piece sound more majestic. It makes it easier on the trumpets also, a win-win situation.

  • Surely they gained their fame from being great at what they do?

  • "the tempo has nothing to do with his conducting"- ermeo356

An interesting take on how the orchesrta works... please correct me if I'm wrong, but, in band, I do believe that we were taught that the conductor is the one who sets tempo, via a baton. The conductor shows the musicians how he/she wishes the piece to sound through expression of face, and conducting gestures.

  • Without the conductor, the musicians are free to interpret as they please, and the piece is not together. So tell me, can the orchestra simply do without anyone standing on the podium?

  • It has been tried with good results. The concertmaster usually sets the tempo if there is no conductor. In Bach's time, the conductor usually played the harpsichord or positiv organ, as Ton Koopman sometimes does.

  • That is not usual everywhere. Somwehere, conducter plays continuo, sometimes it is a violinist and sometimes, it is just conducting. For italy is usual that harpsichordist is a conducter.

  • The orchestra explote like fireworks in the Feast of the Lord. And, when you don´t expect, you hear some voices arising from nothing, praying Him with contagius joyness and jubilee.

  • perfect tempo!

  • This opening movement leaves me in tears every time. When I see it live, I have to bring tissues because it just tugs on my heart so much . Thank you very much for posting this.

  • I'm glad there's another crazy person out there. Whenever I hear the opening bars of the Magnificat the waterworks start and I begin sobbing with joy, and I'm Jewish!..., and intend to remain so.

  • Same for me, - and I'm a Vaishnava!

  • i had the honor of being in the sf boys chorus and performing this piece with the sf symphony and seiji ozawa

one of the most perfect pieces of music ever written

    and im jewish too

  • Magnificent!

  • Finally the right tempo!

  • This gets me so aroused.

  • Harnoncourt's prfm. of Bach's glorious, glorious Magnificat ranks alongside those done by Rilling,Corboz,Gardiner,Hickok in my opinion.

    sdgoh (malaysia)

  • absolutely loving the baroque instruments!
