Although I disagree with the decision here, I do think that Sikhs have contributed a huge amount since they arrived here. They have integrated since the day they arrived, never forced their religion on anyone, fought for our country and practised peace and tolerance. Compare that with our muslim population and look at all the concessions they have had. If any community deserve a little extra support from us it is the Sikhs.

My father's cousins attended school here ( in the mid 60s) and were voted in as school captains/vice captains ( boys and girls), by the white majority pupils. They wore their karas with pride and without any of these 'modern day' problems.
Back then, many Sikh men had white girl-friends and again, no issue with karas on that front either.

I'm intrigued as to how the UK has "sunk deeper" because this girl has won her case. The girl, no matter how zealous a Sikh she is, should be allowed to practise the way she wishes. I go to school in Gravesend, which has one of the largest Sikh populations outside of India (nearly every 3rd person you see is a Sikh), and they are some of the most tolerant, hard-working people you will ever meet. Offenders are not religous before they enter prison that is why they are offered rehabilitation which incorporates learning about God! If they were religious they would'nt commit crimes! OK as far as P.E and health and safety is conserned- I wore a thin flat karra in P.E, pulled it as far up my arm as it would go n then taped it with micropore with a sweat band ontop. my teachers were absolutely fine with this!
after P.E i simply removed the tape and sweatband! !!

and if you really need a non superstitious reason, a amritari a sikh who follows all the rules of sikhi, does not eat meat, and the steel bracelet is made out of complete iron, and every now and then the bodies skin will absorb the iron through the bracelet, thus completing the bodies need for iron, and the proof is that every time the body absorbs the iron there is a yellow rust ring around the wrist. and would you have made a fus if the girl was of your religion?

5) It is not a piece of jewellary, whether it looks like one or not is irrelavent. Its a piece of armour, made of Sarabloh or pure steel and is considered to be the living embodiment of the allmighty. it reminds the wearer never to do anything bad with their hands.

2)Sikhs under British Law are considered a separate ethnic group and have certain rights, i.e. Wearing the turban to work, in the army, carrying the kirpan, and wearing a kara.
3)Whether or not she chooses one out of the 5 or all 5 is her choice, the point is its her fundamental human right to represent and express her faith in the way prescribed by the faith.

Although I disagree with the decision here, I do think that Sikhs have contributed a huge amount since they arrived here. They have integrated since the day they arrived, never forced their religion on anyone, fought for our country and practised peace and tolerance. Compare that with our muslim population and look at all the concessions they have had. If any community deserve a little extra support from us it is the Sikhs.
