We have large cars and SUVs in the USA because the nation is so big. Our interstates are inferior to your Autobahns, as well, so we need larger cars to navigate them.

As an American I think there is much to be learned from the Europeans. I lived in Germany for a time and I noticed that energy, fuel, and transportation are issues that Europeans have dealt with more efficiently. Also, I was very impressed by the German recycling facilities at the supermarkets with the voucher systems. Therefore everyone recycles and there was no need to pick up the recycling directly from everyone's house. Fuel prices are more expensive in Europe and so the cars are small.
