Incidentally, why do you use WinBoard? BabasChess is seems a friendlier and more powerful interface for Windows XP.
Also, did you ever have a "GreenCastleBlock" handle on FICS? Somehow I feel that I remember you on that handle.

3) No, GreenCastle was open last time I checked but the admins are stuffy and won't let me change my name there. I've had the Shidinov handle there since high school. Any FICS "GreenCastle" or "GreenCastleBlock" is an imposter. Why anyone who want to pretend to be me is a mystery though.

Yes pattern recognition is a big part of tactical play... although I am not the best at it, a lot of players are built to look for tactics in every single position, these players excel at blitz and internet play where the deeper tactics are completely absent and strategic plans can be foiled by one mistake in time pressure.
