Pretty much while still in his youth, he became a Beatle. After a while, it could become like a prison that they have to get out of and find individuality. In 1970, he needed to discover who he is as an individual and believe in himself. At that point in time he needed to take a sabbatical of self discovery. Can't judge him on what he believed in 1970. It's not even our right to guess how his views changed during the next 10 years.

Some people seem to be missing the point, Lennon lists everyone and every thing in his life that has influenced him, good or bad, to make him who he is, but the message he is passing on to everyone else is you can look up to these people/concepts/beliefs, what ever, and have respect for them all but do not come to rely on them and expect them to save you in your times of need. It is up to you to make the most of things, you are the one who is resposible for your own choices and decisions.
my father went to school the next day i think he was a junior or senior in high school and walked into his math class, first period. there was obviously a sad feeling in the air, and his math teacher pulled out a box with a record player plugged it in and started it up with the great album "plastic ono band" and listened to it for the whole 45 minutes... Some people seem to be missing the point, Lennon lists everyone and every thing in his life that has influenced him, good or bad, to make him who he is, but the message he is passing on to everyone else is you can look up to these people/concepts/beliefs, what ever, and have respect for them all but do not come to rely on them and expect them to save you in your times of need. my father went to school the next day i think he was a junior or senior in high school and walked into his math class, first period. there was obviously a sad feeling in the air, and his math teacher pulled out a box with a record player plugged it in and started it up with the great album "plastic ono band" and listened to it for the whole 45 minutes... RIP John
