  • awesome

  • WONDERFULL the art of the percussion ........ NO DRUMS

  • very very amazing .. 'monkey chant' or a more famous name "KECAK" comes from Bali, Indonesia .. You bring it with great detail and madea noise that describes the atmosphere like in Bali ...

    awesome ...

  • People acclaiming too early ruined the final, what a pity...

  • He's the best ddrummer i´ve ever heard, not just cause of his tecnic, also for his innovation and his work in Wilco

  • That is some wild, innovative percussion. Very cool...

  • yeah they are little crickets and they hae bird ones too. i'e seen em in san francisco china town. like a buk

  • Does he loop the scratching snare sounds? They continue even after hes finished moving them.

  • holy crap, I didn't realize this was "in front of an audience "live until I heard the audience applause at the end. That is absolutely incredible. Without a doubt one of the best multi percussion solos to date. This is my new favorite piece of percussion literature.

  • love to see a white guy getting back to his african roots

  • The cricket boxes are a modern souvenir of original Chinese cricket cages...in China people would keep crickets for their soothing sound. But now there are digital and mechanical (spring) versions so no need to keep the living creatures. From the quick look these look like the spring version. Great stuff.

  • Anyone know the drum heads he's using? They're Evans. Looks like J1 maybe?

  • His drums sound awesome... and his cymbals... and his fruit bowl... and cowbells and.... and crickets....

  • I heard about this on the Radiolab podcast. Glen says the inspiration is the story of the Ramanyana

  • lol - i opened up another tab with the Balinese Monkey Chant (from Baraka) and played these two together - the rhythm fits so well - he captured it 100% (this video is much longer but you could overlay the audio from that monkey chant with his performance if one was so inclined)

  • Crickets man, crickets.

  • I think this mainly inspired by Balinese Kecak and other gamelan music.

  • I think this mainly inspired by Balinese Kecak and other gamelan music.

  • @Alwaystuned. here's the wonderful Wilco drummer, Glenn Kotche.

  • Indonesian Melody and rhythms. awesome. :)

  • Artistic & Wonderful...

  • I'm convinced that Glenn could do more with a 4-piece kit than Neil Peart could do with his 56 Million-piece kit.

  • @NorthWriter this is far more than a 4 piece kit though.

  • @NorthWriter They are two completely different styles man

  • Hi guys,

Here is what Glenn sas on the cover of his album MOBILE:

"I assigned specific voices from parts of my electr-acustic drum kit to play the roles of the characters(the crcket boxes are direct lift from the real crckets overheard in the original tale)".

  • spring drum, If you like this check out Tony Oxley or Chris Cutler,Don Moye,

  • The man is ubiquitous, pure genius.Glenn's music has that deep, meditative sensibility of the far eastern's shamans.

  • this bent my mind a little bit

  • THAT'S A FUCKN PERCUSSIONIST !!

  • i love this

  • yeah, this was amazing live, yeah they are crickets...i asked him after the show.

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • Over the Top- insane Great...

  • woooow, it's breathtaking :D he's so cool !

  • I thought they were cicadas in the boxes....

I marched Lake Park Marching Band with Glenn in 1986.

  • Anyone who knows what that big spiral, aluminum thingy that makes a big "booom" sound when he hits it is ?

  • Mind. Blown.

  • This is...wow....just unbelievable. He can compose entire songs with only the drums and some objects...

Can anyone know how he can loop the spring-snaredrum sound? Does he uses a loop station, delay effect or is it an acoustic thing?

  • something else man.....percussionists and drummers take note.. ....through composed musical statements are possible on our instruments. Lyrics and guitars are not needed here, Glenn offers creative and stylistic relief here. I for one am taking.

  • Man, when he pulls that coil through the snare, it really does sound like a monkey.

I don't love Wilco, but Kotche is a pretty spectacular artist.

  • This is not a drum set solo. This is percussive work of art.

  • i told you man

  • @SnareKidJoel YEAHHHHH

  • @angelflorido92 IS A PERCUSSION SET SOLO

  • This guy may very well be the single best drummer working in rock today. I'd like to see Dave Grohl try this.

  • @DreamerM never mind Grohl...use this to shut those Travis Barker heads....they're probably too brainwashed to care. But yeah, it sounds like Glen's done some serious ethnic percussion study, I'm loving this.

  • he marched cavaliers.

met him this week, hosted a clinic before a show with a group called Bang On a Can. REal nice, really really good.

  • Dude when did he march?! That's freakin' sweet!

  • 89 i think. no videos

  • Holy crap! Never seen anything like this.

  • Probably the most innovative thing I've seen in over a year.

  • I think he's got a looping pedal or some other kind of sampler. I assume that the springs only have one performance in them. It's almost like theres a feces throwing monkey right in front of you!

  • @ricchris1 I thought he was looping the string-noise until I realized he's just holding it in his hand while he's also doing other stuff. This guy is doing ten things at once. It's mind-blowing.

  • O_O wow

  • awesome.

  • AMAZING creativity!!!!

  • OMG this is so brilliant! So incredible! The most musical drum piece I have ever heard and I have heard so many... Pure genius!

  • This is waaaay too awesome.

  • whats in the boxes?

  • crickets

  • this guy just blows everything out of the water. i've ever heard a drumset sound like a wild animal before

  • what's he doing at like 4:55?

  • He's got long springs socketed into his snare drum. When he tugs them out, they take a little while to retract and the sound resonates in the drum. Pretty sweet. I'm open to correction if anyone else has a better understanding of what they are.

  • wow, that's awesome

    thanks for the explanation!

  • Those springs are normally found in a thunder tube.

  • yeah, that's weird that it does the noises when he doesn't play them....that's the best exlplanation i could think of...or he loops it

  • he is probably one of the most original and "classical" modern drummers in the world

  • insane

  • that. was. incredible. wilco is my favourite band and i had no idea that glen is SUCH a good drummer. i knew about nels being a monster at guitar, but having two heavily technicaly good musicians in that band that writes such sweet tunes....im blown away.

  • this is what a musical and technically masterful drummer sounds like. rock on!

  • In an era where everyone's doing this fastest hands - fastest feet thing.........It's great to hear some Godly music for a change............besides - one can't live on shit all of the time

  • is there anyone else who does solos like this? I dont mean just like this, but that it sounds like a song not just fast hands

  • Yes, there are others, but among Glenn's generation you have to search for them sometimes.

  • Yes, but you mostly have to search the world of "percussionists" based music rather than an average drum solo kind of thing.

  • woooooooooow...........

  • there are no words to describe this..it simply blew me away...i don't think i've ever heard such innovative percussion

  • deems ain't real crickets. they are light activated cricket boxes that mimmick the real ones. Glenn is a genius!!

  • I am blown away... This guy is a fucking monster, i cannot stop watching his videos. Thank you so much for posting this, it has changed my life. This guy is now my favorite drummer ever. What an inspiration. Just marvelous. (i am immediately going to add 4 cowbells of various sizes to my kit!!!)

  • those aren't cowbells. they're more like almglocken (though probably more of an indian or asian variant)

  • Comment removed

  • that is impressive! his kit is very minimalistic for that type of drumming aswell which is very admirable in my eyes. what was in the boxes he opens at the start?

  • i think they are crickets. ive been trying to figure that out myself!

  • i asked my mate today and he said that they are chinese cricket things. he said they arent real crickets but they make a cricket noise. i dont beleive him just yet lol

  • yup thats exactly what they are. i used to have a few that i bought at the boardwalk. just thought it was a kids toy, i never thought it could be used for something like this haha.

  • @kevlar69er they are light activated plastic crickets from asia. VERY CHEAP! Very fun!

  • @kevlar69er they aren't crickets, at 33 the camera zooms in on the box, its some kind of noise maker that sounds like crickets. he so goods

  • @kevlar69er They sell them in China town in Chicago at souvenir shops. I bought some there myself. Guessing the same place Glenn got his since he's in Chicago too.

  • @kevlar69er Yea they are crickets. I saw him do it live in Albany a while back.

  • @kevlar69er toy cricket boxes

  • @kevlar69er Yes, they are.

  • @kevlar69er I saw this live at the University of Richmond a couple of years ago and he said that they were these little asian toys he found at a market that are made to imitate the sounds of crickets. I guess they're spring powered or something.

  • yeah definately crickets, i used to have some when i was a kid. they're little golden crickets that make that noise when you open the box.

    so innovative!

  • @jb666pearl bells very tiny bells.

  • @jb666pearl bells

  • They are some asian cricket boxes, its a cheap sound maker, that when you open them, a cricket noise plays for a certain amount of time, much like western music boxes. I don't know a whole lot about them, but I've messed around with them before.

  • I...I have no words.

Simply incredible...I never heard something like that...His creativity has no limits, it' a genius.

  • sick

  • an amazing performance from an amazing musician.

  • thank you so much for posting this! glenn kotche is my favorite drummer and i love mobile but have never actually WATCHED him do these songs! i was lucky enough to be able to tell him a few weeks ago at a wilco show that i love mobile and he flipped. what a humble dude. thanks again. this was incredible to watch.

  • This man is just amazing. I discovered a whole world of different percussionist and composers thanks to Glenn. So talented, I think he really changed Wilco.

  • It is speechless impressive.

  • Absolutely brilliant...hello senior recital!
