  • @chambsuper90 definatly a big old thumbs up

  • i remember them on TOTP with a pogo stick covered in silver milk bottle tops

  • @collibosher100 He's still playing the Zob Stick - check out vids of Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts, it's the same guys!

  • this was the first record I ever bought. Gawd, takes you back.

  • I don't get all the Mungo Jerry jealousy. Terry Dactyl to me were a version of Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts. Great fun college band. Little Red Caboose and Graham Hines being very rude with Shave Em Dry.

  • @mrandmrsglenn it's the same band :)

  • catchy tune and song

  • I had a bet with a mate that this would get to number one. He said it would not and i won the dosh.

  • @Randombutcutexxx Actually, you owe your mate some money !! This song by Terry Dactyl & The Dinosaurs (featuring Mr Jonah Lewie on lead vocals) was almost - BUT NOT QUITE - a number one hit, back in the summer of 1972. Its peak chart position was number two.

  • I forgot just what a great feel good record this really is

  • The Man with the boot on a broomstick (called a Zobstick) is my mate Keef Trouble from "The Okee Dokee Band" that plays Broadstairs Folk Festival every year. This is one of our numbers and goes down a storm in Broadstairs by the sea, but I'm afraid you have missed it for this year as it has just finished We also do " In the Kitchen at Party's" another of Keefs songs.

  • sounds so much like Mungo Jerry

  • @Tungstencube66 Sounds like in the Summertime to me too.

  • Nice. Have u got flipside "Vulture Stomp" (I think) ?

  • Fabulous!

  • That last bit sounds like the typical British summer...the heavens opening up.

  • I was young once - where did it go? Lovely song!

  • fuck off idiot

  • In the summertime?

  • Yes, it's unashamedly Mungo!

  • Funny thing - this song came out before Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime". So if anything Mungo Jerry copied these guys.

  • Thanks for the info "pinky" - Yes and no and yes!!! Apparently it was performed live before the release of MJ's ITST, though it's unsuccessful release on Sonet in '71 and its later success on UK Records in '72 still make it as "coming out" after ITST, it does actually predate MJ's song! So yes, if any copying went on it was MJ copying TD & The Dino's...which is all news to me... lol

  • In the Summertime was released in 1970. This song was released in 1971. Mungo Jerry didn't copy as they were singing their song 12 months beforehand.

  • @pinky0926 Don't be silly. "In The Summertime" by Ray Dorset & Mungo Jerry was a massive hit in the summer of 1970; "Seaside Shuffle" was in the charts in the summer of 1972 - all of two years later.

  • @pinky0926 No, it didn't. "In the Summertime" came out in 1970, while this came out in 1972.

  • @pinky0926 This was out in 1972, 2 years after In The Summertime!

  • See my reply to Elgroover.

  • This came out on the UK label but the video shows a DECCA record being played??

still a great tune-first record i ever bought.

  • top feelgood tune

  • i wish this was #1 at the moment

  • This tune really reminds me of the theme tune to RAB C NESBITT!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha

  • LOL - Know what you mean!!

  • aye ,happiness , not a lot about these days

  • To True!!!

  • great old song brings back memories of the past!!

  • Haven't heard this since it came out in 1971 was in cwmbran in Newport back then brings back some good memories.

  • Me as well , i was five, i think i heard mellow yellow too on a hot day.

  • i would love to see the top of the pops serssion i think 1 guy had a seagull on is head.bring back the 70s

  • and a pole festooned with small cymbals thumping the floor...

  • The fogotten art of making a happy tune. D'ya remember happiness? It was back in the 70s sometime. It was OK to change tempo in mid verse back then : )

  • Has anyone heard the bagpipe version of this on the Albion Dance Band's "Shuffle Off" album?

  • spot on i love it !!

  • You are right in your suspicions stalkawave. Not the same band members, but this was a deliberate style copy by Jona Lewie of the Mungo Jerry hit 'In the Summertime' to cash-in on a good thing.

Lewie (John Lewis) followed-around his hero Mungo, real name Ray Dorset, some unkind commentators adding: 'like a puppy'. He then managed to get to support and second-bill Mungo. Lewie undoubtedly picked up all his musical, compositional, and creative tricks from Dorset.

  • Ha ,I rember dancing to the (hornpipe) bit in this song at the barn disco 1972 TT races in the Isle of Man, havn,t heard it since then till now . thanks, good find ,kickass music ay !! NZ now....

  • still a great tune

  • i used to dance to this at my wee nannys at the weekend many years ago, now im 37 it still brings back old memories of happy times with family that are no longer with us, and im still dancin'

  • I came upon this via jona lewey, and my initial thoughts were mungo jerry, in particular "in the summer time" is there any link with band members? not sure I'd part with my hard earned cash on a vinyl copy though.

  • This brings back memories of summer in the 70's.

  • i have this on original 45 well scratched now.

  • Nice one, thought I was the only anorak .That has to be the reissue,I have it on UK record label from first issue.Lovely tune.

  • I never expected to see this here.

  • looks like a decca label but it came out on uk records was it reissued on decca later

  • That's a New Zealand issue of the record. The UK label 45s came out on Decca over there.

  • Jona Lewie on vocals then?

  • Yes Jona Lewie is on vocals

  • Thanks.

  • is this a gay sailor song?

  • Dunno, maybe you know more than I do?

  • hahaha, glad i found this. my cousin broke his ankle stomping to this one christmas...

  • I'm old enough to remember this song being originally released in 1971..Noel Edmonds played on the Radio 1 breakfast show that year.

It was re-issued a year later and managed to get played on TOTP and subsequently become a hit...I remember one of the band had a Doc Marten boot on the end of a broom shaft...stomping it on the floor to make the beat! Hopefully somebody should have a clip of it..

  • so good. getting always in a wonderful sunny mood while listening to it. played it once twice with my band. does a video with the band performing it on tv exist ?

  • Top, Top, track brings back so many happy memories.

  • this was the very first record i ever bought but i remember it being on the UK record label. thanks for posting

  • heads up to (or just 'up') the poofta legend.

  • Thanks for posting this! The first (and only) time I heard this was on radio in Australia, 1975!

  • was listening to mungo jerry and happened upon this - excellent sound quality. Popped on the headphones and jammed.

    thanks for posting this!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Legendary song Loolllllll im 11 and i love this song my dad told me it ! Its so bloomin g....... GREATTTTTTT

  • Poor video for a great song and a wonderfull performance. Jona Lewie is Englands master in esay listening tunes

  • hmmm interesting response about the video. This is purely for the listening pleasure of a rarely heard recording. I note that your video of "do it" by Neil Diamond isn't exactly a sensational video, infact you had the huge advantage of choosing from thousands of Neil Diamond pictures. Finding "Terry Dactyl" pictures is not easy. Just enjoy the music.

  • spent months trying to find a recording of this its just not in the shops, mind you we do live in florida usa, but thanks for posting it , we thoughrily enjoyed the music and the memories i had just left scholl!

  • Great to see it got airplay in the U.S.

  • @bonesytrev get it on spotify.com! i am not a spammer! lol.

  • I appreciate your time and effort in posting this here for us to enjoy. It's never played on the radio, even on the gold stations. My memories of seeing them on Top of the Pops was that they played the drum with a fish (LOL)

  • I think I remember an HP sauce advert that used this song - or was I hallucinating?

  • It is true that it is a great piece to listen to.

  • I wouldn't describe this as easy listening, more like a blend of novelty, pop, sea-shanty and folk!!

    (Just my opinion)

  • Wow. Very very good. Super. Wonderful. Thank you!

  • Thanks warwickwas, I have been looking for this for ages, brings back the memories of when times were better!

  • WOOOOOOOW Since middle of seventies I did not listen this song! Wonderful!

  • Brilliant! A rarely played classic even on the 'Gold' stations
