Ashcroft needs to forget his mediocre solo stuff! He needs the Verve. As much as a genius songwriter that he is it still lacks the McCabe, Jones and Salisbury magic that makes Verve so special.
The Verve - Greatest thing thats ever happened to modern music, ambient, love, ecstacy, everything you could want from a cup of soup, physcadelic, like jason and the argonauts our struggle against survival with a little help from the VERVE - Fucking COME ON!!!!!!!!!!
anybody know what tv production this was from? Did they make a tour documentary of their US tour in 97? Anyone know where to get it or what the name is? Thx
I have part of it on tape. At the bottom of the screen when the ads finished it was titled "The Verve". This doco was of their Urban Hymns tour, as you assumed.
This is the best song on Urban Hymns by a country mile - they struck it rich with this album in terms of broader appeal, but this song is so reminiscent of their earlier stuff which is what I'll always remember them for.
@atomicozz I saw the Verve twice, first in Dublin August 97 and then in Belfast December 07. The gig in Dublin is the greatest show I have ever seen. The whole band were on fire that night. By the time it over my jaw was on the floor, I was speehless. The gig 10 years later was almost as good. Its shit that they cant work it out, but thats what happens sometimes. We still have the records. A Northern Soul is one of the greatest records of all time. But then again all their records are brilliant.
Hey Author, are you removing comments cos they are slagging this performance? I ain't read those you've removed, but I must say I've been doing covers for years and I haven't even bothered going near McCabe on this form, he's unreal. Muse, Radiohead, Metallica, Oasis etc. no problem, Coldplay is an insult. The Verve are untouchable in modern terms.
if we're comparing bands, I'm not going to hate on Coldplay, they are a lot cooler than their "fans".
Radiohead has such a complex-driven crowd and they're way too depressed for me. I can't buy they're "I'm a rock star woe is me" act.. Esp. if they're tickets cost $1000+ at places like Outlands during a subprime crisis. :0/
??? C'mon Yorke.
I just like the Verve, Killers and Muse better. i think the quality of a band is related directly to how much their fans are enjoying the show.
One of my fave songs, really can't decide which I like better...the studio Version on Urban Hymns or this ! Both are fucking APOCALYPTIC !!! absolutely awesome !! the energy is never ending and infectious, feel like I can do anything when I hear both !! :)
Simon played the intro to gravity grave just before they started this song. When the crowd responded Richard said they couldn't play GG because they didn't have the proper effect. (The echoplex? ha.) Personally I think it was because they wanted to film this song as the closer in Detroit. Fantastic show...as was St Andy's '93.
The Verve are one of the greats. If for nothing else, just on the basis that they can play a song live, and make it sound as good (if not better), full and rich as it does on a studio recording. I mean, this is note for note perfect.
I agree that they play huge sounding music, and that they deserve bigger venues over here. But I wouldn't say that stadiums are the best places for any band. I've seen lots of shows in arenas, clubs, and outdoors and if the venue ever detracted from the experience it was in the stadiums. I haven't seen the Verve though... Haven't hooked around to venues near me since they reunited...
dingy pub? St. Andrews Hall. Fuck stadiums. No music should be played in a stadium. This place holds 1000. And the way Nick McCabe's guitar rolled of the stage like lava was otherwordly. I was there I know.,
the verve are my life but i fuckin hated this documentary. the performances should have been shot normally. the interviews should have been normal interviews and they should have interviewed every band member thoroughly.
I dont want to spam or something but if you go to theverveonline com you can see the whole us tour "documentary" on one side which redirects back to youtube videos but anyways. Just wanted to let you know.

Wot a tune this is! Wasn't a fan of ashcroft's solo stuff, he had a good few songs but the Verve are just unbelievable, they have one bad song imo! Cant wait for the new album
Just seen them at t in the park! What a band! I've seen some great bands, oasis, coldplay, K.O.L, the killers and many many more and they are by far the best band I've seen! Get it fucking ben you!
I'm a huge Verve fan, and I've been researching some facts/rumours about em. Can anyone verify/deny this:
On the album Urban Hymns, at the end of the song "Come On", both Richard Ashcroft AND Liam Gallagher are screaming "This is a big, FUCK YOU!" Now, I fucking loooove this song, and I've always assumed it was just Richard.

The clowns that go on sh*t like Idol and claim they're talented and that they've given their lives to music make me want to puke.
Richard, Pete, Nick and the 2 Simons are 5 of the most natural born musicians you will ever find and every last breath they breathe will be because of music.
Great f**king video and sound quality! Thank you for posting!!! Just saw them at Coachella and they are completely AMAZING. One of the best bands in existence no doubt.
I think that if Richard didn't hold the SPIRIT inside HIM at 1:52 the universe would have collapsed into a wormhole emitting nothing but a cosmic dimensional eviscerating evanescent jet of iridescent spark petals.....
