great track. i'm a bass player & have been for 30 years nearly, and prefer the work of Lemmy on Hawkwind's - 1972 " Do Remo Fasol Latido ", particularly on " Time We Left " .. i think it bashes Bruce's fuzz bass all over the head with a big stick. - far more wilder and energetic.just my opinion, and ya know what they say about opinions though. everybody's got one. anyhow search youtube for " Doremi Fasol Latido " if you're curious
Jack Bruce is a guitar player with a bass guitar in this song. Sure, it's a great solo, but it's a guitar solo (and I'm not saying that because of the distortion, true bass players should understand what I'm saying).
I don't know about the relationship between Frank and Jack Bruce but this song is bad ass, probably my favorite cut off the album aside from 'Uncle Remus'.
I can hear why Zappa hated this. Bruce has said Zappa's music was awful and here he seems to want to subvert the whole thing, especially Frank's solo, with bass distortion having none of his usual depth and richness. No attempt to pin the roots and cutting through everything like a bluebottle gone berserk with a buzzsaw. Oh it's deliberate, all right. It's a musical "fuck this shit" message to Frank.
Frank's more "Rock" side than what we ever imagined,,,,, his work was always a part that made us laugh and talk,, a social networking musician more than a "Hendrix",, but we did know that he was an equal,, even back in that day... he knew how to get serious more than any of us did,,, we never ate yellow snow or any of those fortold things that he warned us about,, but "Catholic Girls" were high on our list.... but we took good warning,, that one night when Mary didn't show up,,,, we
Jack is playing the same Fender Jazz VI that he played with Creem. It used to drive me crazy because i would try to emulate him on a 4 string P-Bass. The Jazz VI is closer to a baritone guitar instead of a true bass.
This song brings back great memories of growing up in the 1970's. Apostrophe is best described as a super bad ass 70's jam song. Jack Bruce cranks out probably the greatest bass solo in rock history. He shreds his 6-string bass the whole time and its fresh the entire way. Frank does great work on the guitar and the drumming is top notch too. This is a tasty and tight jam!
@robertzm Bruce played a Fender Bass VI in the mid 60's which was tuned like a standard guitar only an octave lower. The Fender Bass VI was small like a guitar, used heavy guitar strings rather than bass strings and was tuned E-A-D-G-B-E a while regular 6 string Bass is tuned B-E-A-D-G-C. From his Cream days on I wasn't aware he played it any more.
As a Jack Bruce fan, I'm almost ashamed I have never heard this- but that is either Jack or someone very much influenced by him. Almost sounds like Felix later into the piece. Very goood stuff.
LMAO- Who doesn't Jack Bruce hate? Big fucking deal. . . like he's the only bass player who ever lived or something.
The only thing that I am suprised about is the drummer. I didn't know Jim Gordon played drums on this track. For some reason I thought it was Prarie Prince who played drums on this track. Oh well.
of course it's Jack Bruce all the way. Nobody but nobody plays bass like that! Nobody can put the instrument so far forward, show that kind of dexterity, and have that tone. Besides, I read an interview with Zappa where he confirms Jack plays - but that Zappa hated it. I think it was typical Zappa sour grapes when someone could actually put him in his place - muscially speaking.
jack bruce didnt actually play bass on this song........only the very intro that goes WOOOOOOOM!!! and then the inital song starts......on this video they cut it out....
Who told you that???? He most certainly did play bass on this track. If you knew anything about his style, you tell immediately that it's Jack. I've read several interviews in which he talks about playing on this track.
Frank, whom I met earlier, appeared one day in the studio and asked me: "Can you take your cello and go to my session?" So I turned up in a NY studio with my cello, I'm listening to his music, pretty awful, and just don't know what to do with myself, and Frank says to me: "Listen, I would like you to play a sound, like this... whaaaaaang!!!" So I did what he asked me to do. Whaaaaaang!!! That was all. That was my input to Frank Zappa's most popular record! (laughs) "

@Tilaron. Bruce has talked quite openly about playing on that session. He didn't deny it at all.
proferic 2 years ago
@Tilaron he denied playing and said he played cello instead, cause he hated every minute of it.
Also, Zappa didn't like his bass playing, saying that Bruce was "too busy" with the bass and didn't play in terms of root function.
Well, they hated each other :D
Sounds pretty damn good to me, btw :)

Apostrophe, for the bass line intro, played by Jack Bruce. 1973 I don't care that much for the rest of the song, but its my favorite bass passage.
