For those of you who watched the "Perlman in Russia" video in its entirety, what is the title of the piece she is playing at 1:20 and Perlman interrupts "Can you show off here" and then he exposes his trouser braces
Perlman is just so layed back and listens to every single little thing, Anyone know the name of the first piece. By the way, just to add in, I'd trade my soul and my life to be taught by Itzhak Perlman, or Zuckerman for that matter because he's a violist. I've been playing for 7 years now, I hope to be as good as Zuckerman in 40 or 50 years, I need money to pay for exquisite lessons though haha,
No me canso nunca de ver este video, creo que el Maestro Perlman ha de ser una gran persona, ver este video me emociona, gracias maestro!
Never I am tired to see this video, I think the maestro Perlman has been a great person, to see this video make my emotions on my skin, thank you maestro!
I have seen many a masterclass and Perlman is one of the most kind. Looking beyond the hero worship the value really is in mining gems of wisdom from one of the greatest masters of our time. It is as if the musician him/herself is allowing the master to tune them.
Perlman is master and a mensch! I also love his rich, plummy speaking voice. He is one of the few performers around these days who can articulate musical thoughts to lay people without sounding neither snobbish nor inarticulate. He is one of the best!
@operalament As far as Heifetz's teaching goes, Sherry Kloss, Erick Friedman, Ayke Agus, & Eugene Fodor {among others} would completely disagree with you. Perlman is so worried about hurting someone's feelings & being misinterpreted that he fails to make a salient point. Heifetz taught students who could barely speak a word of English but never allowed a language barrier to get in his way. He was very direct. Heifetz, by the way, was fluent in at least 10 languages. Perlman is no Heifetz.
@unclejuniorsoprano Perlman is no Heifetz, agreed. But once must also agree that Heifetz is no Perlman. Different teaching styles affect different people. I didn't know that Heifetz could speak at least 10 languages, that's pretty cool, but it's as Perlman says "It's an international language." I think that he got plenty across to the performers. You can't really judge his teaching on this video. It's plainly cut. Also, playing for someone like Perlman is teaching enough for one masterclass.
@Stringy007 You don't know what you're talking about. Heifetz changed violin playing forever. He is the violinist whom all others are compared with, not Perlman. Perlman is the first to admit that he could only dream of playing like Heifetz. Perhaps the only other violinist who compares with Heifetz is Michael Rabin. Perlman & Rabin studied with Ivan Galamian & Perlman attended MR's funeral. Heifetz's abilities were extraordinary & both Perlman & Stern revere him as the top of the heap.
@Stringy007 OK. umm Heifetz hasn't changed violin playing anymore than Perlman. There isn't any hierarchy in this... They were/are both great. They were totally different. What does attending Rabin's funeral have to do with anything? What does Isaac Stern have to do with this either? You seem like YOU don't know what you are talking about. You are making up random things in attempts to prove me wrong. There is nothing wrong with this masterclass and you should learn to respect all of the greats.
@Stringy007 To say that Heifetz is no Perlman doesn't make any sense at all. That's like saying Mohammad Ali is no Jerry Quarry. Heifetz made several landmark recordings over the course of his long career, but I don't recall even 1 of Itzhak Perlman's. As for being a great teacher, the Heifetz Master Classes is a testimony to that. I have several of Perlman's recordings & like much of what he does, but Heifetz is in a category of his own. Isaac Stern regarded him as unapproachable in talent.
Sorry i'm jew-phobic. It's because i was circumcised by one when i was just a lil lad... So it's nothing personal to Itzhak. They all make me shiver like a cold wet baby...
@Refosproductions --but he uses constructive critisism...and is nice about it. My teacher always tells me.."You did really well" It's really good for the soul and helps you keep your passion for your instrument and not get discouraged.--Joni
@Refosproductions same here. I mean I can play concerts and play in front of relatives but one thing I cannot do is play for someone I dont personally know in front of an audience then have him critique me.
I worked a catering function where the owner of my company asked Perlman "How is everything?" He said regarding the teachers who were performing... "All I have left are my ears, tell the band to stop or I am leaving"
What a man, an incredible talent and a great communicator too. I've seen many masterclasses which plonk a genius on a stage who can't face people and teach.
haha... Itzhak may not be the best player out there... but for me, he is the best... the greatest!! He plays a stradivarius right now I'm not sure what he played when the video was mad. Usually famous soloist charge upward of 400 dollars an hour. It sounds like a lot but keep in mind their time is more limited than their students, and their students are generally people (adults) getting ready for auditions with symphonies to get a job. Most musicians stick it out and hope for a master class since they are usually free to students, paid by an organization.
