I love the article you wrote. This is all too true. Our beautiful old buildings are being torn down daily. No one cares about preserving history. Our with the old, in with the new. If only people thought about how we can never get these things back...once they are gone they are gone because modern man just doesn't have the capability to build such works of art anymore. It goes along with his inability to think.
Hi RbZom5 I have been fascinated with this mansion since I saw this video a couple years ago. I read your article so I decided to pull up a satellite image and for the life of me I cannot see it on the map. You said near the Mid Hudson Bridge and you also mentioned being able to see the Mid Hudson and Poughkeepsie railway bridges framing the view. Can you give me any other landmarks? I am enjoying searching the map but I really want to find it and am having no luck. Thanks for the wonderful pixs
Hey folks, sorry I haven't been able to comment as much as I would like. The location is now on a State Park- the Franny Reese State Park in Highland, NY. As far as I know there are no signs identifying the ruins as that of Dr. Roberts (he was a dentist in the late 1800's and this was his home.) I've done much research on the place. For more pictures of the property visit my photostream- flickr (dot) com/photos/64263533@N08/ Replace the "dot" with a period and include the ww w.
It is beautiful. I have always loved the Victorian era and would love to decorate my home in that style. With a little less clutter but love the style....
I would love to live in an old home like these. They last longer than the newer built homes and can withstand more damage. Plus, their very unique and elegant looking.
Plus its in the woods as well? My kind of home. haha
@trainfreak7745 That may be. At the time I accessed this house using the woods and hiked 3 miles through the hot woods to get there. Since then I've realized that there is access from a nearby road. When I said "hardcore" back in the woods I was referring to the trek I had taken to get there.
@RbZomb5 ur right there tons of stuff in the middle of the country...............and all west PA theres nothing for 45 minute stretches on the highway PEACE
@1grinder1 My grandmother lives in the country in the woods. She lives two miles from the nearest highway. However, you can still hear the cars on the highway from her house. It's not surprising though considering sound travels at 736 miles per hour.
@1grinder1 And no cool old mansions. But yeah, one man's woods are another man's civilization. I found that out when I moved from Louisiana to California.
@1grinder1 OK, Crocodile Dundee, I'm sure you're much too macho for this and Australia is wilder than the hair on your chest. But why not enjoy this short video and use your imagination, instead of criticizing? Carry on, mate, I'm sure there are some animals to kill with your bare hands.
What a grand home that must have been. I love old houses and other old buildings.
I have spent large amounts of money and many years of my life restoring my 1840's home. I've lived here now for nearly 30 years and I will no longer ocupy this home when they take me out in a rubber bag.
I resent the comments and messages that I have received telling me to "smash it up" or "make it a party house." I study and value history far more than immaturity. I am, however, aware of the immaturity YouTube has to offer so I am not surprised. Therefore, if you would like to know the location, which is now protected state park lands, you're welcome to message me but I will not publicly post it in a comment. Thank you to those with genuine, non-malicious interest and I welcome messages.
THAT! is beautiful! I would love to go there. The way the house is hidden amongst the foliage is so mysterious? Is the old road completely overgrown with brush etc?
I also can feel the history and spirit of older homes, as though they are speaking to me. This is such a shame, can you please try to video tape more of this house and tell us where it;s located in case someone whats to try to save it?
@joshy04743 im sure if you found a house like this in the woods and it looked like it hasnt been touched for over 100 years im sure it would fall apart very easily probly not the best idea to go inside :p
Yes, thank you! I have an affinity with historic homes and the people that lived in them. It's as if I can feel the passage into a different time. To think of all the life that filled the homes for years, only to be gone forever.
Exactly. Same here, I feel a connection with the past. But another thing that draws me to an old house is the aesthetics of it. It seems like they took so much more care into the design and layout, and looks. Unlike today, these houses aren't simple boxes roughly divided up into different square rooms. My friends all think i'm crazy because i CHOOSE to live in an old house, even if it is in what is considered a "bad neighborhood"
I think it's admirable and fantastic that you choose to live in older house. It's cool that you feel the connection with the past, too! I often wonder if I am too late in my life to start a new career of checking out old places and research those that were there before. Not sure what you would call it and I know the only pay is the reward of learning and paying homage to those spirits.
Is this in Highland NY? I grew up on the river and there is an old ghost town up the hill from my house, and all these buildings look like the ones I remember. My father said in the 1950s there was furniture and clothes inside all of the houses--doesn't take long to look like that I guess. If it is its an old town of about 11 houses, see if you can see it on google earth-Highland NY 12528, near the Mid Hudson Bridge.
Oh it's beautiful... I'm in love with victorian houses *.* you are very lucky if you can see this house every day. Could you take a picture in the inside of the house?
@Emogirlallalone If anyone would like to see more photographs of the house feel free to message me and I will send you a link to a short slideshow I made of this house and the surrounding structures. Thank you for your interest!
it might have been abandoned because of it's location. It would have been fine for back before electricity or cars because there was no need to run power lines or any of that stuff all the way back there. Is there even a driveway or some sort of pathway to the house from a road?
Does the article you wrote about the abandoned Victorian in the woods still exist? I tried to go to the website (highland history) but freewebs says the page does not exist.
