It is fenced off at the Ilkeston end but there was an opening where there should be a gate. It wasn't demolished because quotes to demolish it were too high - it is made of wrought iron which cannot be cut up with an oxy-acetylene torch and would have to be taken apart rivet by rivet. It is now grade II listed. There's a full description of the viaduct on the Wikipedia web site.
The GNR Derbyshire and Staffordshire Extension which ran from Nottingham, via Kimberley, the viaduct and Derby Friargate, to Egginton Junction. There's a description of the line with maps on the Wikipedia web site.
