Following the fall of the Ottoman empire, the victors of word war I began carving the middle east into artificial political entities. You are correct, Palestine has long been considered part of Syria, but not the modern state of Syria as we know it today. Back then Syria encompassed Palestine, Lebanon. In Arabic it is known as As-Sham.

But in that land that we describe as Palestine there were Arabs that populated that area. Those Arabs owned land, tilled the land, went to school, had businesses, ran newspapers. It had all the institutions of a modern society. Why are you denying their existence?

When Arab leadership tried to violently overturn the legal allocation of former Ottoman land for the reconstituted Jewish state, the concept of self-determination for Palestinian Arabs didn't exist & wouldn't for many years. Had they not decided to reject that allocation those same Arab institutions you mentioned would probably have grown & flourished in the state of Israel. The people considered themselves as part of the greater Arab nation.

And there is also ample evidence of Israeli militias committing heinous acts of terrorism as well. Refer to bombing of King David hotel. The causes are articulated in many books. One of the main reasons was that the Palestinians were witnessing their own displacement in the midst of massive Jewish immigration.

Prior to 1948, Palestinians were becoming increasing frustrated and concerned about the massive influx of European and Russian Jewry and not because they harbored resentment to Jews. Even if they are not a historically distinct people, they are still entitled to pursue that distinction, hence the concept of self-determination. Now what you need to contend with is how do you justify the colonization of Palestine by a foreign entity? What granted the Zionist movement to take over someone else's land?

@mikep1738 What you fail to realize is that in the early 20th century there were no modern states to speak of anywhere in the region. Following the fall of the Ottoman empire, the victors of word war I began carving the middle east into artificial political entities. You are correct, Palestine has long been considered part of Syria, but not the modern state of Syria as we know it today. Back then Syria encompassed Palestine, Lebanon. In Arabic it is known as As-Sham.

When Arab leadership tried to violently overturn the legal allocation of former Ottoman land for the reconstituted Jewish state, the concept of self-determination for Palestinian Arabs didn't exist & wouldn't for many years. Had they not decided to reject that allocation those same Arab institutions you mentioned would probably have grown & flourished in the state of Israel. The people considered themselves as part of the greater Arab nation.

I don't trust modern sources like AIPAC, most NGOs (beyond translations of Turkish-Arabic-Hebrew), & diplomats with self-serving revisionist history. I prefer original documents & sources, documented testimony, early contemporary media & academic papers as the basis for my comments. P.S. Even Peters & APIAC aren't 100% inaccurate 100% of the time.

NATION = a cultural identity, can exist without a country, and dont need to be a state.
COUNTRY= territoritorial land; a socioeconomical determination.
STATE = the legal power that organizes a nation. It's not a natural ocurrence, but a normative 'situation, . States can be sovereign or dependent, kingdoms or republics, etc; and are.the more transient, unstable and least indicated to determine the identity of a people.

And there is also ample evidence of Israeli militias committing heinous acts of terrorism as well. Refer to bombing of King David hotel. The causes are articulated in many books. One of the main reasons was that the Palestinians were witnessing their own displacement in the midst of massive Jewish immigration.

Prior to 1948, Palestinians were becoming increasing frustrated and concerned about the massive influx of European and Russian Jewry and not because they harbored resentment to Jews. The Palestinians perceived this radical influx of western oriented Jews as a threat to their land and self-determination.

@charvel1959 Islam is an all-encompassing socio-political ideology with spiritual elements that uninformed people divide into autonomous loosely related categories like political Islam, social Islam, religious Islam, militant Islam, etc. Those distinctions, like separation of church and state, don't exist in Islam. Atheist, Christian, Jew or Hindu are unbelievers to be converted, subdued, or killed. GrandestMufti is bolder and probably not mainstream, but is by no means a rarity. Read the Koran!

Solidarity with one side over another is not justice, although it is proffered as such. Solidarity with one side OVER the other only exacerbates the problem. The discourse is so tinged with racism and hate (on all sides), each claiming to be acting justly. Justice framed in terms of a victim and a victor (as a zero sum game) is facile and dangerous, and will not lead to peace. Justice is a dialectic. Justice, in fact, is a non-zero sum game (win/win or lose/lose).

Can you imagine what an example it would set for the world if we were able to find a way to live in peace in Israel/Palestine? All the pieces of the puzzle are there: a shared monotheistic tradition, a shared land, and shared interests.We are closer to actualizing this than most people realize.Peace is in the best interest of all parties involved...it is a non-zero sum game.May G-d bless us with the wisdom to see clearly that peace is a matter of creating the conditions for mutual prosperity.

The Jews two thousand years ago had their land taken, the Jews today did not have their land taken, therefore the Jews today cannot rightfully take land that never belonged to them.
