  • this was an awesome commentary one of my faves

  • are the seleucid phalanx better in loose formation?

  • @SauffreJet Against cavalry or another phalanx, no, but on loose formation they will do a better job of holding up and delaying other infantry because they will present a broader front. They'll also take less harm from ranged attack like all loose-formations.

  • I wonder why he took upgraded Nile Spearmen over Pharoh's guards. I think after all those upgrades, Pharohs Guards would be cheaper and are noticably better.

  • as always a very entertaining commentary! ... and a nice battle too

  • "and when you're dying i'll be still alive", lol

  • omg great vid LOL!

    "Still alive!!"

  • Cluny you had me in laughing stitches with that general to companion conversation :D awesome video man.

  • I've often wondered what I'd do if the little electronic men ever actually did realise where the view-camera was and look up at me. What would they say?

  • Hmmm, I suspect something like this:

Bill: Hey Fred look! Is it a God?

Fred: Not sure... throw your pila at it and we'll see.

Bill: Don't be daft, now stay off that crack pipe and fetch me some blessed virgins for sacrificial purposes.

  • You have a really good sense of humour like me ^^

  • Cluny, your talent lies here: 8:18

  • Yes, they should have me on 'Britain's Got Talent.' Susan Boyle's got nothing on that performance.

  • THE CAKE IS A LIE

  • Depends what kind. The angel cake isn't a lie, no matter what game you're playing. So light and sweet and fluffy.

  • i will be still alive ;] i have similar battle when i was played greeks- on 6hevy hoplites 3 group of archers and 2 groups of greeks cavalery-

  • seriously Cluny... you have a talent here..

  • Cluny... isnt playing

  • No shit.. I'm saying his talent lies in his oration skills... Even though he is a beast of a rtw player..

  • Your videos are the most entertaining RTW commentary I've found!

  • Thanks, False.

  • Maybe, but it's too late for me to change it now, eh?

  • Good, he's a decent fellow and a good player.

  • ill mis your videos man

  • And they'll miss you. Here's looking at you, kid.

  • So your still playing RTW?

  • From time to time, though not much. I've gorged on the game.

  • are you going to do this for empire?

  • Nope, because: a) I won't have a PC powerful enough to play ETW on top settings (which I insist on) for a good while; and b) I think I'm pretty much done with these videos full-stop. I'm going to do the Prize-Video #3 for the Final of the this tournament, which is long overdue now, and then that will be it.

  • wow im suprised how the nile spears held out in the end

stalling move wth the archer BRILIANT!

  • It sure was crafty of him.

  • Great commentary, and fine battle. Well played Mace and Seli.

  • Yes, and they both got through to the semi-finals as well.

  • it looked like for a while that the seleucids would dominate the egyptians maybe if the seleucids kept their cavalry behind his infantry line he would have won

  • You might have a case there. Since their infantry was stronger, if the Seleucids had delayed a decision in the cavalry-contest they could have done more damage while waiting for Selifator to seek a cavalry-decision himself. I expect MaceMan's was in "rush-army" mode, psychologically - at the forefront of his mind was the need to attack quickly. Plus, he saw an opportunity to gain an advantage by knocking out those 2 Desert Cav who got separated from the others - and it did nearly work.

  • I think that you have neglected one important aspect of the battle - desert troops suffer a penalty in the snow.

  • That isn't actually the case - desert troops gain a combat bonus in deserts, but no penalty in snow.

In fact I hadn't heard this suggestion before, Rogue, and I was intrigued by your argument, so I ran a series of tests in Custom Battle to find average kill-rates in identical single-unit engagements, using Desert Axemen as a model. As you'd expect, their average kills was notably higher on a desert map. But in a comparison between Grassy Flatlands in Summer and Winter there was no difference.

  • That's odd, as the unit files show a minus in the collum for snow bonuses. Perhaps I'm reading it incorrectly.

    For example:

    type egyptian infantry

    dictionary egyptian_infantry ; Desert Axemen

    stat_ground 2, 2, -2, -2

stat_ground Combat modifiers on different ground types. From left to right

    ; scrub, sand, forest, snow

(This is from the export_descr_unit file).

  • Or was the Seleucid general actually showing the first signs of awareness of GlaDOS, and is he now in android Elysium?

  • Perhaps his words were been recorded by history, and GLaDOS took them from her database files when writing her own version of the song, whie in much the same doomed but defiant mood.

  • Fitting Portal quote; For the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead.

Look at me still talking when there's science to do...

  • And this is cake is great, it's so delicious and moist.

  • i know maceman

  • Good video, and good commentary, funny, yet it had a formal feeling to it.

  • Please.... never sing in a video again... please....

  • I promise never to actually sing, but I don't promise not to recite lyrics in a monotone (i.e. my usual method).

  • Hahahm "Lets see that in slow mo" XD

GG, may I ask what were the rules?

  • You sure may - the rules were my own adaptation of Xavier's KotH system, and in full are:

    Max 7 archers (including horse-archers).

    Max 4 horse-archers.

Max 2 elephants / artillery / berserkers / scythed chariots.

    No non-scythed chariots allowed.

All other unit types unlimited (e.g. slingers, melee-cavalry, skirmishers, etc).

No use of the red-line for defence.

The idea was to allow greater variety than in cwb while still restricting or balancing unfair units like chariots and HA.

  • Thanks for the vid Cluny! GG Maceman, looking back it was indeed a bit of a see-saw, though it certainly felt like it went better during the game.

I didn't realize a couple of the mistakes Cluny pointed out, but I am still satisfied with my performance.

The army I chose was my standard Gyptos army, chariots will never be my first choice with them.

So a couple of manoeuvre mistakes, but overall a victory. Again gg to maceman and kudos to cluny for hosting the tournament.

  • Yes, well-played Selifator, and you're welcome for the tournament.

  • lol good game realy they got there ass kicked by naked guys that care knifes in snow :P

  • Which would make anyone doubt their manliness, really.

  • lol "that weed was some bad shit" grt game to both players i kinda figured selifator would win. he is a grt player. kudos to both sides.

  • Aye - in my experinece only a bad score could explain that paranoiac feeling you're being watched by an invisible camera giving you orders.

  • That move with the archers was great

  • You're right. I think that moment when the archers were just holding those two pikemen suspended precariously right in the rear of the Egyptian line, like flies in a very thin web, was one of the things that caught my attention about this battle-replay.

  • that was very nice!

    i enjoyed!

  • You're welcome.

  • Fantastic video, Cluny, thanks for making it.

Also, good game to Selifator if he happens to stop by here.

  • You're welcome, Mace.

  • I looked to youtube every two hours for a week in hope to see a new video from you. Keep them commin' m8.

I'll finaly buy the game and i can't wait to play online. I know you get this a lot from n00bs like me but i hope we can play a game or two.
