  • i loved the start of this game... it was proper mysterious or something. gradually it became shitter (but still great game)... id give it 8/10

  • I would give it a 2.5 / 5. The the start of the game was super epic so the game had so much potential. But the story sucked. There were so many plot holes that it got to the point where i wasn't sure whether or not i was going to be able to finish the game due to my lack of interest. I could tell that Obsidian had big plans for this game and that they were going to make it something historical, but had to meet their deadline so they made a half-ass game. They couldn't even make the ending cool.

  • You're welcome.

  • Hey does anyone know if this mod is finished? and if so where can i find it?

  • so does kotor 2 remember decisions from the first one cuz i beat the first one on the light side but that was on the xbox and i want the second one for the TSLRP so i wont miss anything

  • There's no save import feature. Basically you're given the dialogue choice at the beginning of the game as to the events of KotOR1, and it goes from there.

  • @DWTerminator is it like subtle like you know what its doing but it does it in a smart way or does it just slap you in the face and say tell me what happen

  • It's pretty up-front.

  • @DWTerminator thanks for replying and great review by the way

  • No problem. Thanks.

  • hey i have a question i have this game on my pc and it runs pretty good will this one run on my pc as well???

  • I watched two of your reviews, and I just wanted to say that I find them very informative and enjoyable to watch. Thanks and keep up the great work!

  • Glad you like them.

  • The game isn't finished because Lucasart gave them a WAY to short timetable and than didn't let em continue after it, the greedy bastards knew it would still sell cus it's kotor 2

  • this map is the same as kkotor one

  • ... That's because it's the same location as in KotOR1.

  • @DWTerminator Have you managed to play the game with the restoration mod yet?

  • Nope.

  • @DWTerminator Do you think they'll make one for xbox?

  • Xbox doesn't support mods at all.

  • @JacobNion i did and even if its incomplete, it does fill some gaps. and it works, of course

  • kotor 2 is better for me. Most people don't understand the story. I didn't, but once you do, it gets pretty epic. The dialogue is so peotic. <c( :

  • i wish the new one would be for the xbox 360

  • KotOR3 doesn't exist. If you're talking about The Old Republic, lemme ask you this: would you play an MMO with monthly fees on 360?

  • @DWTerminator yes i was talking about the old republic and no i would not play the game if it has monthly fees

  • @fallout7311 exactly because its not singleplayer its a massivly multiplayer online game

  • do u have to be a girl in this game plz reply

  • One would think you can tell by the game footage in this review that you can be male. It's just that in the Star Wars "canon," the Exile is seen as a woman. You can defy that all you want in the game.

  • Such a shame they couldn't push back the release date to finish it, probably would have surpassed Kotor in every aspect then. Oh well, Obsidian seem to be taking good sequels to brilliant games and somehow messing them up

    Kotor 2

    New Vegas

Alpha Protocol(not a sequel just a really unfinished game with bad mechanics)

  • It's sad that Obsidian's never allowed to actually finish what they start. Can't speak for New Vegas, but KotOR2 could've been better than the original game were it finished and Alpha Protocol could've been great were the mechanics ironed-out and the minigames fixed.

  • Quick question, do you happen to play on a 4:3 resolution such as 1600x1200? I've heard that people using wide-screen monitors can have trouble with the pre-rendered cutscenes such as the opening logos taking a long time to load and such, and I was wondering if you had ever encountered unnecessarily long start-up or load-times for the pre-rendered scenes? I'm on Windows 7 with a Radeon HD5850, AMD Phenom 2 550 Dual Core 3.2GHz CPU and 4GB RAM on a True HD 27 inch 16:9 monitor btw.

  • 1024x768, which is standard 4:3 ratio. Works fine for me.

I dunno about widescreen stuff though. Sorry.

  • @DWTerminator That's fine Terminator. Last question for now, where is there any blood in this game I wonder? The ESRB descriptors say there's blood, but there's none in normal combat, and even when Kreia loses her left hand there's not even a stump in her robe-sleeve. No spoilers please, I'm only barely off of the Peragus mining station.

  • There are small blood pools and severed limbs at certain points in the game. Nothing particularly graphic (I've seen worse in E-rated games, actually).

  • @DWTerminator Ah, and what instantly comes to mind is the Severed Arm with the Hidden Bek Datapad in KOTOR 2 near the Rancor in the sewers with Mission and Zaalbar. Now I get it.

Still, I don't get why so many shy away from the Original Trilogy style lightsaber/melee bleeding. In Mos Eisley when Obi-Wan disarmed the alien there was a clear blood pool at the stump, but now everyone thinks it's "Cool" for the wounds to be cauterized by the heat. Depends on blood pressure really...

  • Well you'd think that a blade made of plasma slicing through your arm would simply melt it off rather than cut it like a sword. They also switched to that to avoid getting the movies/games rated higher. "Back in the day" you could get away with alot more.

These days you have blood in the game and it's pretty much guaranteed to be an M-rating. LucasArts has never made an M-rated game. For some reason if the dismemberment isn't bloody, it can fall in the T-rating category (ex. Force Unleashed 2).

  • A lot of Kotor 2's implementations were overlooked by the fact that it was rushed. I just started a replay on this for my Macbook, and I'm playing with the Restoration Content mod (my Xbox didn't have it). It's a whole different game with restored content, and I recommend it. There's also mods to be considered.

  • Even though it was rushed, KotOR2 is still a good game. I wonder what it would have been like had Obsidian actually been allowed to finish it (the restoration mods aren't exactly what they would have implemented no matter how close we think it might have been).

Still, I have yet to check out the restoration mods. I'll have to do that.

  • dont worry DWTerminator, i like romances in games also, I think we all do (at least us nerds). but Kotor 1 romance felt more stable and better while in Kotor 2 feels kind of broken. but i think the reason why many people look down on this game is the ending =(

  • Well, KotOR2 has the excuse of being unfinished, at least. That's probably why the ending fails so badly and the romances are so awkward and broken.

  • someone please help my KOTOR 2 game wont work on my computer anybody got a solution?

  • Can't help you if we don't know what your problem and system are.

  • @DWTerminator when i start up the game it lets me create my character but after the intro video it just stops and a pop up shows that it wont work but doesnt give me a reason why, i then click on check online for a solution but never gives me one

  • What operating system and system specs do you have?

  • @DWTerminator I just figured out i dont have the right CPU so thats probaly why

  • CPU shouldn't be too big of an issue.

  • @DWTerminator well i have windows 7, 4.00 GB RAM, 64 bit operating system sorry if i gave you the wrong info im not that good with computers

  • I need to know what your graphics card/chip is. You can find that by going to display properties (right-click, go to "properties." It's where you change your resolution and wallpaper). Find the tab that says "settings" and tell me what it says under "Display." At least, that's how it works in XP; I'm not sure about Vista/7 though.

In addition, I need to know what your processor is. That should be under system information (where you can view how much RAM you have).

  • @DWTerminator i have intel celeron 450 with 2.20 GHz and intel G45/G43 Expess chipset

  • It's a combination of Windows 7 and your Intel G45/43 chipset. Running it in 7 will give you difficulties to begin with (I don't think anyone's been able to run it without having to tweak it), but that Intel chipset is essentially useless.

  • I love this game to death, but the parts cut out are so detracting to the experience. Too bad about it.

  • is this game free when you download???

  • Like I said on your other comment, no monthly fees, but you have to buy the game.

  • its lucasarts fault that the game wasnt finished. obsidean wanted more time and lucas arts didnt give it to them

  • Sadly, that's the case. Makes me wonder what would've happened were Obsidian given more time to finish it up.

  • @DWTerminator **SPOILER WITHIN...SOMEWHERE** There were adding two new worlds- M4-78 and Coruscant- and there were going to make it so that Vash didn't die on Korriban, but was imprisoned at M4-78. Also gonna make it that if you were female, and had more influence with Disiple (SP?) than with Atton, they would fight at Malachor. Also would have added more parts at Malachor and an HK factory... SUCKS!!!!!

  • I know what content was cut. A lot of it's sort of been added back in via mods but I doubt it's all been restored to what Obsidian originally intended. The most comprehensive restoration mod ended without a release (apart from a leaked alpha version) not too long ago, so there's not much hope of having a complete KotOR2.

If they ever make a KotOR3, we can only hope that it's actually finished on release. Knowing LucasArts, thought, it won't happen.

  • @DWTerminator They arent making another KotOR persay, but they are making something that revloves around those events, which is just the Old republic

  • The Old Republic is set 300 years later and doesn't really have much to do with KotOR. It might reference some bits of KotOR1/2 here and there but those are looking to be fairly loose tie-ins that don't matter all that much.

  • @DWTerminator Yeah, but its the closest were gonna get becuase from what i've seen, there isnt gonna be another sequel

  • Of course there won't be. LucasArts would rather send out short, monotonous action games (*cough*Force Unleashed*cough*) than long, entertaining ones.

  • @DWTerminator YeAh, the idiots dont know how to continue a series to save their lives

  • Sad. LucasArts pretty much dominated the 90's... then suddenly went into "suckage mode."

  • @DWTerminator I dont understand what is wrong with them

  • @DWTerminator same thing with Rareware. it used to be one the most creative designed developers that makes awesome games like Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, and Conker, but now they are getting worse and worse from making sports games to Avatar Clothes

  • I just know them as Rare, but yeah I know what you mean. GoldenEye 64 remains one of my personal favorites (which is weird considering I normally don't like console shooters much). It's sad to see how far studios fall.

  • to you which one do you preffer kotor 1 or 2

  • Tough choice to be honest. I pretty much like playing both equally, though I have to say I like KotOR1's story better and KotOR2's gameplay mechanics better. That said, KotOR2 forces you into a couple stupid situations that just irk me to no end so I guess in the long run I like KotOR1 the most.

  • @DWTerminator good answer. Agreed 100%

  • are the force powers good and is this one better than the first one

  • Depends on what you consider "good" and "better." The gameplay mechanics are better than in KotOR1, but the game's incomplete so the story's nowhere near as good as the first. There are more force powers than in KotOR1 and they have a much more noticeable effect as well, so maybe that answers your question.

  • ok thanks man

  • can you use duel light sabers

  • Of course. The character I used in this video was a single saber user though.

  • I got TSLCRM for this game, and it definitely makes the game feel a lot more complete, it's arguably as good or better than the 1st.

  • where do you get the mask

  • Can't remember. Sorry.

  • I rented this game it was the better of the 2 but when i went to rent it again it was stolen! I want this game so bad i havnt found a copy since i rented it.

  • @talkingbeatlehead buy it off ebay?

  • I got the game and when the part where it says Long ago in a far away galaxie after that finishes it says the program isn't working do you know anything about that?

  • That's marvelously vague... You can always just skip the cutscene and see if that helps. If not, I'm not quite sure what would cause that. I'm assuming your PC meets or exceeds the minimum requirements, but what's your operating system? Have you updated the game as much as possible?

I *do* know the game crashes relatively frequently for practically no reason (compared to most games).

  • Does this game give a little bit of free roam I was with my cousin when he was playing iether the first or the second and I remeber a city where I think there was something like a colleseum it was near the begining?

  • Yes, there's limited free roam. You can only go to planets important to the storyline, but there's generally lots to do on them that is aside from the story.

As for the arena, I can't really remember off the top of my head if there's one in KotOR2, but in KotOR1 the first city you go to has one.

  • i know what you mean by missing parts...like on telos when you go into that military base on the restoration zone there is a door on the map that should be opened but i have looked everywhere to try to open it and no luck so i can see where your coming from but that definatly shouldnt stop anyone from playing this game its awesome

  • kotor 1 or kotor 2...

which would you say i play first??? and which is better in your opinion?

  • Gameplay is better in 2, but the first game is far better in storyline. In my opinion, play the first one before the second. KotOR2 makes a lot of references to the first game, so you'd be better off playing the first game beforehand.

  • @flatlandryan Play the 2nd one first, because that makes sense......

    Christ.......

  • You can play the second without having played the first and still enjoy it... kinda like Mass Effect 2 or Max Payne 2. It's just better to do the first game beforehand since you'll get so much more out of the second as a result.

  • Well, I hope you have as much fun with it as I do.

  • Control scheme, performance (Xbox version doesn't run very well), graphics, the capability to mod the game, overall stability.

  • Far better.

  • This game dosnt work for vista! >.<

Only works on xp and earlier. But for some reason the first one dose work on vista.

  • @Germanatior i have xp but i will try what he said

  • Nothing works on Vista. ; )

Ok, jibes aside, there's a fix to run the game on Vista, you know. Go to the KotOR page on FileFront and enter Vista in the search, and one of the results will be "TSL Windows Vista Fix." Download that, extract it, and put whatever's in there in your KotOR2 main directory (where you find the exe's). Game'll still crash, but it'll work.

  • If your a fan of KOTOR 1 should you play this game?

  • Definitely, but keep in mind it's an unfinished game and as a result has tons of holes in the quests/storyline and is severely buggy.

  • you know what's funny it say blood but it more like sparks

  • The only reason the rating has "blood" as a descriptor is because there are blood pools on the floors. The original game didn't have any blood at all (and didn't need any as far as I'm concerned).

  • um yeah i installed it then it said that my graphics card isn't good enough so i uninstalled it got the new card and tried to install it again and it won't even give me the option to install it can anyone help

  • Never heard of a problem like that before, but have you tried running the setup program directly? Go to your "My Computer" (or "Computer" in Vista or 7 if you have either of those), right-click on the drive that the disc is in, click "Open." Find the program "setup" and run that. See if that helps.

If it doesn't, do a Google search. Like I said, I've never really had that problem before.

  • @ralphy329 had the same problem mate. This game dosnt work for vista! >.<

Only works on xp and earlier. But for some reason the first one dose work on vista.

  • @ralphy329 had the same problem mate. This game dosnt work for vista! >.<

Only works on xp and earlier. But for some reason the first one dose work on vista.

  • Wow amazing review! Very througho, i dont understand though why some people dont like RPGS! still it was good, im subcribing!

  • Glad you liked it.

  • Man I remember playing this a few years back. I'm gonna get it again

  • I wou;dve loved the droid planet

  • Awesome game, but the ending ruined it.

  • I'd say the fact that it was released a couple months too early ruined it. The abrupt and "tacked-on" ending was a result of that.

  • I know where the ____ CRYSTAL is, but where's the ____ armband?

  • You get it at the beginning of the game.

  • it looks fun should i buy it or kotor 1 first?

  • KotOR1 first.

  • @Legomanjunior1313999 what do you like better in a game: story (buy 1) or gameplay (buy 2).

  • Good game. Superior story and writing, but HORRIBLY, HORRIBLY unfinished.

  • Story and writing aren't superior simply because because it's unfinished. The gameplay is certainly better than the first, though. Sad that it never got finished.

  • @DWTerminator I heard a rumor the Master Vash survived and is in the droid planet I WILL NEVER BUY FROM OBSIDIAN AGAIN

  • The problem with this wasn't Obsidian, it was LucasArts rushing Obsidian to release it when it should've been in development for another couple months. The content is in there, and there's mods to "restore" it.

That said, Obsidian seems to do a good job with what they actually finish.

  • @DWTerminator first i wanna say, great review!!! really good job, man. :D

and next i just wanna say that i hope that perhaps someday we'll get a KOTOR 3 [not the old republic] and it'll have things such as the droid planet :D

i actually haven't played KOTOR 2 yet. I'm a huge fan of the first [played through it like 6 times lol] but i just hadn't picked up the 2nd til today. can't wait to get started ^_^

  • Glad you liked the review.

I too hope for a KotOR3, but I know it probably won't happen.

KotOR2 is horrendously unfinished and buggy, but I'm sure you'll find the gameplay itself superior to that of KotOR1's. More feats, more force powers, more items, the opportunity to make your party members Jedi... if only the game itself were finished.

  • @DWTerminator We can always dream, though. haha

Yeah, I got a chance to play just a little bit last night, and even early into the game I noticed missing dialogue at least once thus far.

I think even with the holes and bugs, though, I'll manage to enjoy it. Hopefully it feeds my need for more KOTOR. lol

  • Yeah, we can hope. Just like with JK4 and DNF.

The missing dialogue is certainly irritating. Hope you can find the game fun despite the bugs and "unfinishedness."

  • @DWTerminator mhm.

Well, I'm about 8-9 or so hours into it so far [trying to find the ebon hawk on telos' service lol] andddd i can say i've enjoyed it so far. i have noticed the bugs n missing pieces, but overall it's still been satisfying. all the new additions are pretty cool so far. can't wait to get a saber :)

the original was definitely a much fuller-feeling game, if that makes sense. but this is a decent successor. coulda been better, but as we said before, we can hope for 3? lol

  • Glad you're liking it. Despite the unfinished feeling and the bugs, I have a good time playing KotOR2. It takes a while to get a saber... and I mean a *long* while. After having beaten the game, I figure it's fine if I add in a lightsaber using the save game editor. Obsidian REALLY didn't understand that making your character a Jedi class from the start should also entail getting a saber pretty early.

But yeah. We can always hope in vain for KotOR3.

  • I've been tempted to edit in one myself, but i wanna beat it clean first, ya know? maybe the next go around. :)

yeah, i figured starting a jedi sentinel might mean i'd get one early. aw well though, the swords n blasters are fun to use, and at least you have force powers, right?

in fact, i'm gonna play right now haha.

  • yeah, so i'm pretty far in now haha. i've noticed a bit of the unfinished-ness, but so far it hasn't been too bad...n then i got to onderon. iziz has SOOOO many doors in the first merchant place you hang around in that LOOK like what you'd think to be normal looking doors, with places on the map they appear to go to, but they're all nothing lol. pretty frustrating but awwww well. i'm definitely seeing it, though.

  • Yeah, like I said, there's several areas in the game that are blatantly unfinished. Unfortunately that gets pretty damn frustrating when you want to explore. Hope you can look past it as well as I do.

  • @DWTerminator agree. they had to rush for christmas I believe. thats when sales are big. This game is supior to the original in terms of better graphics. theres more force powers and you have more equipment choices etc. but it lacks the story and interesting characters of the original. The ending was dissapointing. I thought that your character and Visas were going to get it on so no love story hurt it.seem like it was just missing lots of things. Damn Lucasarts. All they cared about was money

  • Not only were the graphics better, but the gameplay itself is improved over the original KotOR. The mechanics are more refined, of course, but the interface is honestly my most appreciated change (I always felt like the KotOR1 interface was tiny and not very user-friendly as a result).

Who knows? If Obsidian were able to finish it, KotOR2 might've actually been better than KotOR1 all-around. It's sad to see its fate.

  • @DWTerminator so that means fallout new vegas wasnt finsished

  • Probably not.

  • @DWTerminator kotor 1 or kotor 2?

  • Was there a question in there? I missed it.

  • @DWTerminator yeah i asked which one is better kotor 1 or kotor 2

  • Gameplay-wise, KotOR2. Overall, KotOR1.

  • @DWTerminator ok thanks dude :)

  • I loved KOTOR 1 and i anticipated this game a lot back in the day. When it came out i thought it was going to be great, but something was not right, the storyline wasn't that immersive as the first KOTOR and the characters were not that good. I know now why after watching your video... Thaks for the review.

  • Glad you found it informative.

  • KOTR 2 is a awesome game. i like it.

i like being a sith sometimes. lol

  • It's actually easier to play as a Sith in my experience.

  • KotOR2 is a wonderful game that is let down by its horribly quick release. The character interaction is indeed quite awesome, but that's Obsidian for you. Neverwinter Nights 2's character interaction's quite excellent as well, in case you haven't played it (another Obsidian title).

Hopefully Obsidian can get a decent release schedule for Fallout New Vegas...

  • @DWTerminator

Actually the character interaction and the influence system in general sucks. It robs us from the feeling of interacting with an actual person and replaces it with influence collecting. Especially as it's done in the way that "you killed that guy so I like you -1 but since you got that +1 from that compliment afterwards, so it doesn't really matter. NWN2 has the same exact problem.

  • NWN2 does it a little better (and Dragon Age does it fairly well). The influence system in KotOR2 was pretty much just a WiP, as evidenced by the haphazardness of it as a whole. You think maybe it detracts from the interaction, but to be honest, it demonstrates the idea of consequence in relationships. People will like certain things about you but hate other things, and the game simply uses a counting system to show this. I'll admit that it's a little awkward, but it just needed time to mature.

  • @DWTerminator

how exactly does NWN2 do it better? I save that druid friend of elanee's for +8 and then I compliment shandra for -8.

There are consequenses in relationships but it doesn't work like the influence system, there's no existing variable "x" that tells you how much person A likes person B, and there is no such variable for trust either.

That's why all the variables of human relationship are better demonstrated via creative scripting than a ridiculous "I like you X amount" system.

  • It does it better by actually taking the characters' personalities into account. I will admit that Elanee is incredibly annoying in that regard, but for most everyone else it works fairly well (eg. choosing brute force gets you points with Khelgar, stealth gets you points with Neeshka, etc.). In KotOR2 I've never really noticed any sort of pattern beyond being nice or snarky to them that might help explain why you get points with one character but not the others.

  • @DWTerminator

But as both of us knows, in reality you do not begin to trust a person just because you agree with his methods. Especially not with personal matters. The Influence system in both NWN2 and KotOR2 is incredibly shallow and mostly robs the characters of their personality. You can't choose provokative options with them in fear of losing influence or in fear of not gaining it; instead you're forced into constant ass kissing and saving/reloading if you want to build up influence.

  • I never said the influence system is perfect. I said it's *better* in NWN2 than it is in KotOR2. It's better than having the systems of, say, Fallout or the original NWN (where there was no character development at all). The problem with KotOR2's characters is that they're simply not all that well-written. I never really felt attached to any of them to begin with, so why did I bother with the influence at all? Because I wanted to train them as jedi.

  • @DWTerminator

And Seeing how Fallout is truly an ancient game, and the campaign in the original NWN1 was more of a show off of what you can accomplish with the included toolset, they aren't really comparable here.

Other than that you're right in that the failure of companions in both NWN2 and KotOR 2 was more due to bad writing than the influence system, but that doesn't change the fact that I sincerely find the whole system repulsive.

  • If something from '97 is "ancient" then I must be prehistoric. They certainly are comparable in the companion systems simply through the fact that they *have* companion systems at all. I'd say Mass Effect has the best I've seen so far.

You may find the influence system to be crap, and that's your beef. I find it to work well enough that I really could care less about it. Also, NWN2's writing is rather good (it's the bad acting that kills the delivery, sadly), especially compared to KotOR2's.

  • @DWTerminator

Something from '97 truly is ancient in the scale of video game history. Both technology and game design have taken several huge leaps since then. In that period, a five to six year gap is HUGE.

It's true that the influence system isn't nearly as large factor as the scripting of events and the writing and voice acting of dialogues, but It also doesn't really contribute anything either. Then again maybe it just hasn't been used to it's full potential in games yet.

  • No, ancient in gaming terms would be the late 60's through the 70's, aka the Brown Box/Magnavox Odyssey and Atari eras. The late 80's through the 90's were the golden age of gaming as far as I'm concerned (SEGA + Sony + Nintendo + huge leaps in PC gaming = win). Now it's all about visuals and ripping off CoD or Halo.

The influence system is improved in Dragon Age (of course the excellent writing helps that tremendously), so it really just needs to mature into something far more useful.

  • @DWTerminator

Nope, 60's and 70's were prehistory. 80's are the beginning of the historical era and 90's were the ancient times.

"Now it's all about visuals and ripping off CoD or Halo."

Fear not, for in a few years the great visuals will become more standardized and thus the focus will once again be more on brilliant scripting and story.

Perhaps I should give a shot to Dragon Age, though I'll have to buy a new computer first. This 8-year old dustbox of mine wouldn't be able to run it.

  • In a few years gaming will be stagnant. Sadly, the idiots in charge of publishing the games leave little to no room for developers to actually create something unique and excellent anymore (*cough*Activision & EA*cough*), and that won't change as far as I can tell. Seriously. Maybe 2 or 3 out of perhaps 30 games are worth getting each year. Even the series that were good are terrible now (ex. Call of Duty, C&C). I'll take my "prehistory-ancient" gaming over the sea of modern crap any day.

  • @DWTerminator

"Maybe 2 or 3 out of perhaps 30 games are worth getting each year."

How is this different from say, the 90's? Oh yeah, the amount of games that are actually worth buying has doubled since them. And the amount of enjoyable time one can invest in the games has also multiplied.

The truth is, the majority of video games has always been, and always will be, crap. That doesn't change the fact that games today are better than ever. Claiming it not to be so is just having an attitude.

  • "Amount of games that are actually worth buying has doubled since them." 1. Many more games are released now than the 90's. 2. It's been 11 years since we were in the 90's, of course there's a lot of good games since then. The whole of the 90's was overall good in gaming comparatively, whereas the amount of crappy or mediocre games has skyrocketed since 2000. Multiplayer (which didn't really kick off until the late 90's) accounts for a lot of the time people spend on gaming, too.

  • @DWTerminator

Back in the 80's and 90's video gaming vas mainly the hobby and business of the intellectual elite. Nowdays even the more casual minded people are part of the markets, which means that majority of games are being marketed at them. There still are the markets for the intellectual elite though, and that has broadened too. Since the general intellect of people is increasing rapidly every day, especially in Europe, we can expect the quality and amount of those good games to increase.

  • There's barely any market for the "intellectual elite" anymore thanks to the casual gamers, and that market is now polluted with games that are either mediocre or downright terrible. Look at the downfall of Tom Clancy games in general, the distinct lack of *good* RPG's these days, the saturation of the market with sports titles that get released every year with the only updates being the rosters. It's sickening.

Also, Europeans may be getting smarter, but Americans are getting dumber. -_-

  • @DWTerminator

There has *always* been a distinct lack of good RPG's. Nowdays the lack just isn't as bad as it was a decade ago. Some good game series may be failing due to bad decision making on the game companys part, but there will be other titles to fill the void. You won't get anything but a severe depression out from that doomsayer attitude of yours. The fact is that there are more good games coming out than ever before. You just choose not to see it.

  • I don't "choose not to see it," I just see it. The good stuff is hard to find these days because of all the positive reviews for mediocre or average games like Fable and Diablo, but often weaker reviews for indie titles (which tend to be quite excellent). I'm just very picky when it comes to my RPG's and RTS's, I guess.

The main problem is that games are getting dumbed-down for the masses, meaning that the complexity I like in games is disappearing from the mainstream. Look at God of War. -_-

  • @DWTerminator

Mainstream games have always been dumbed down for the masses. Look at Doom, Duke3D, Quake, All the racing games and the RA or WC clones on the rts department. Yup, no complexity there. The more innovative and complex games have always been the rare odd duck amongst the hordes of mainstream games, that has not changed, and that will not change in the near future.

And I know your pain, I'm picky too. I just don't harbor any illusions about "the golden past" that never existed.

  • Doom, Duke 3D, and Quake weren't mainstream, they're classic shooters (games of that fun factor just don't get made anymore). Nobody expects an FPS, especially a classic one, to be intellectually stimulating (unless you're playing Portal or Half-Life). Doom and Quake didn't really go mainstream until the third game in each series.

"The golden past that never existed," eh? I never said that. I said that I prefer older games to new ones because the big emphasis back then was on fun.

  • @DWTerminator

The FPS genre was mainstream back then. Doom, Duke 3D and Quake were all aimed for the "masses". They may be classics, but that just shows how few good games were actually made back then. As for the fun factor, please! If it wasn't for the nostalgic value I wouldn't touch any of them with a five foot stick. Well, maybe I would touch the second Doom. But not the others!

Are you seriously saying that you would play Doom over let's say, Far Cry or Halo? I know I wouldn't.

  • Yes, I actually *do* prefer Doom over both Far Cry and Halo combined. Halo is an average game at best to begin with, and while Far Cry is excellent (I'd assume we're talking FC1 here, though FC2 is quite good, if extremely repetitive, as well), it's just not as fun for repeated playthroughs (and the multiplayer is just plain clunky thanks to the online service, especially the terrible online mechanics in FC2's). Older games are generally longer, more challenging, and still fun.

  • @DWTerminator

I didn't ask which of them you prefered. I asked which of them you'd rather play. Let me rephrase my question: When was the last time you played Doom? If it's several years, I recommend that you download Dosbox immediately and play through Doom once more. After that you may want to reconsider that latest statement of yours.

  • Last time I played Doom was actually about 3 days ago. It's still a blast to play despite playing through it multiple (as in, about 17) times.

  • @DWTerminator

Play through it once more. Without cheats.

If after that you still prefer playing doom to playing the first far cry or halo, then either you're lying to yourself, or there is a certain little doom fanboy residing inside you, and your opinion on the subject therefore cannot be objective.

The point is; Doom was a blast back then. Today it no longer is. The games today are better and more fun. They might lack the certain mood that doom had, but beat it in every other regard.

  • So you assume that I play with cheats eh? I don't. It's still fun. I'll admit I'm a Doom fan, but my opinion *can* be objective overall (otherwise I would be one of those mindless idiots that would say something like "durr, Halo is teh best game evar!"... when in fact, Halo is at best average). You see, *your* opinion is not objective, but rather incredibly biased. You're just another of those who simply refuse to believe that old games can still be just as fun and even superior to modern games.

  • @DWTerminator

I think it's time for us to agree to disagree then. "Average at best" wishes for you. ^^

  • 'Bout time this argument came to a close... XD

  • @DWTerminator I hear ya man i still have more fun playing Doom, Road Rash and KOTOR then most new games on the market.

  • nice

  • I have only played this once, when I was much younger. I could never finish the first level but, I believe it looks like it's worth another try. I just haven't been thinking about it lately. I'm still need to purchase the first one on the PC. I only have the X-Box version but I am aware of the many mods on the PC version for both. So when I collect enough money I will probably purchase both for PC.

  • KotOR is pretty cheap nowadays. In fact, if you look at my review of it, I've posted a link in the video description box where you can get it from Steam. Both KotOR's are fun, but KotOR2 suffers greatly from being so horrendously unfinished despite having better gameplay.

I haven't played the Xbox versions yet, nor do I plan on doing so. I'm quite happy with my PC versions.

  • I was just looking at the 1st KoTOR Steam page I plan on buying it this week. And yeah Xbox versions aren't worth it. Simply because there are no mods. : /.

  • I find it hilarious that you make a conditional statement on such a simple question.

I never go under at least 60 fps (I'd venture it's around 90+ all the time) on my 8800gt, but haven't bothered to check what my avg framerate is. Your HD4350 should max it with absolutely no slowdown (under 60 FPS) as long as the rest of your PC doesn't bottleneck it.
