The problem they wanted to solve probably involved getting enough grip in slippery conditions. A rear wheel drive bicycle will definitely have more trouble climbing than a two wheel drive bicycle. If they can perfect the technology and reduce weight, this technology could be very useful for cyclocross and mountain biking. Cyclists would never need to carry their bikes up steep slopes anymore.
There are better designs out there. I've got an old picture of one that uses a jackshaft and flexdrive/cable drive(like an old speedometer) to the front wheel. Oh and there are fwd bikes, most of them are recumbants.
I would destroy that little mountain bike in about 1 hour, once it hits the salt water on the beach and a few B.M.X. tracks it would only be once again rear wheel drive and the mono fork would not survive the U.S.A. abuse..two wheel drive so what, who cares?the front wheel is not driving when your doing a wheelie.
this is unnecessarily complex. i would replace the front wheel chain with a solid driveshaft, and fit a torsen LSD between the front and rear drive wheel.
When they can invent a 2wd mechanism for a REAL mountain bike, I will be impressed... that piece of crap looks heavy, unstable, nearly NO suspension (where's the traction in that???) the front and rear wheels is so far apart they could span the Atlantic... absolutely failure of a bike, probably worse handling/traction on dirt than a beach cruiser...
use drive shafts connected to the crank works great 4me plus mine are in side the frame so its even funnier wen i let people ride it !! especially if i take the rear drive of(chain) bikes are crap if they are front wheel drive 2X2 is good and RWD for bikes
Well i was recently considering adding an electric motor to my front wheel.
1. It might be easier than attacting it nto the back wheel.
2. you could use both at once.
3. the front wheel drive might give it more traction (not that traction is very saught after on a bicycle unless you are going round a corner at 120 MPH) so scrap number 3 lol
@furrykilla its an offroaders dream to be able to drive both front and rear...not unlike a 4wheel drive truck is much more capable, mud snow ice and my fav. hill climbs
@furrykilla in theory, and on paper, you would be able to deliver more power to the wheels making acceleration faster (as there is a pushing force as well as a pulling force)
@furrykilla I test rode a 2wd mountain bike that used drive shafts consealed inside the frame and a worm gear set at the head to connect past the steer tube to the front wheel. The bike was amazing. It climbed mountain like nobodys business.
Typical AWD vehicles have a lower fuel economy than 2WD vehicles simply because more moving parts are consuming the engine's power. The same goes for this bicycle: All things equal, you'll have to do more work to move it than a typical rear-wheel-drive bicycle.
Physics aside, I find the 2WD concept to be interesting and I would like to try riding one.
The front wheel chain comes from the non geared side of the rear wheel, so spins the front wheel at the same speed as the rear, irrespective of the gear chose to spin the rear wheel on the other side. I think.
Most of your weight it on the back wheel. You don't need 2WD in the trails. I can see it coming in handy in ice and snow though. Then again the biggest problem on ice is front wheel slippage so maybe that would be worse.
Haha. Is it efficient? IMHO too many parts, too many chain-driving gears, too many frictions, too many power losses, transmission timing problems. It looks like not easy ride.
The bike looks really wobbly. Not sure if it's safe to ride.

obviously you have never tried to ride a bike while loosing traction, when both wheels spin it simply slips out from under you
Fentanyl3 3 years ago
No, I have. And I would buy it becaue it just seems so damn nifty.
EdwardMolotov 3 years ago
well, at least you tell the truth I imagined some kid thinking it would let him slime 50% grades in wet clay and conquer black ice covered roads
Fentanyl3 3 years ago
Hahaha that would be a disaster with a two-wheel drive bike XD.
I'd try it on the pavement and see how it affects my turning and stuff.

as it has gears on the rear but not on the front woudnt that mean that the front wheel would spin slower than the rear and maybe cause problems?
