@ Jaydoggy531, HEEJINEH, and pianomikey0 Debussy's works Do actually have a melody, but the difference in this music, and music of an earlier time is that rather than following an actual scale like F, or d minor, it follows what theorists call a "collection," meaning that it follows a certain number of notes and is centric to one of those notes. The central pitch can usually be determined by looking at the pedal tones in the left hand (c)
@brainykid800 We're learning about this kind of music in my Music Theory class (I actually have to answer some questions about this piece for homework. :) I'm not trying to be a know-it-all or something, I just thought I would share.
Also, @Klaus126 As my band director says "All dynamics are relative. No dynamic is absolute. There's no set piano, and there's no set forte. The dynamics build off of one another." I frequently see music where there will be a crescendo to a lower dynamic.
@HEEJINEH Debussy used texture to create form, hated "that damned German development", used modality (you'll never hear a true 'modulation'), and yes he used melody, it's usually harmonized, moving parallel with other notes.
Great performance, though I think he took a bit too much liberty on the dynamic indications... even though only p and pp are in the piece, he seemed to crescendo backwards, up to the pp. Whatev
Hard to describe Dubussy's music. It's so dissonant, especially his later stuff. Tonic? Out the window! Resolution? Circle of fifths? Progression? Bah!
I don't know whether this is painful, nostalgic, or some other emotion I can't really define.
Nevertheless, a very moving piece, and expertly performed.
Sono letteralmente senza parole per questa interpretazione dei preludi! Canope raggiunge poi vertici assoluti di elevazione spirituale. Un momento di grande riflessione intimistica molto commovente.
non penso si poss fare di meglio

What am I supposed to listen for in Debussy? I love a few of his works, but most of his pieces sound like a lot of random notes to me...........
HEEJINEH 2 years ago
@HEEJINEH
His pieces heavily involve textures and motives rather than melodies. They aren't random notes by any means.
