  • Well, I licked a piece of tissue paper and stuck it to that highlight (like a dimple) under the dragon's cheek, from a full side view. Then, I used a ruler to get a fair measure to the last bottom tooth. Then, I compared the mark to the top teeth, and the bottom jaw would close about 3/4ths through the nostril, toward the forward part of the snout. So, if anything there's a very slight, natural/'almost human' under bite.

  • OK i figured it out. what makes it look like that is the lack of showing the eye on the opposite side of the drawn dragon. if you see that eye it then you know its looking at you. but without it, it now looks more like a side view.

  • the bottom jaw is NOT oversized...........it's just the perspective.........by the way, that is an AMAZING dragon............

  • that explains it... before seeing this i couldn't say it was oversized neither because i was overwhelmed by the details, lightning and 3D effects...

  • thumbs up if you are at least a tiny wii bit jeoulous of this guy!

cos im fucking massivly jeoulouse of him.

  • Dear God your talented...

  • most dragons are seen with underbites and people arent used to seeing this much length on the jaw when its this thin. i love your work, its unique in a way

  • Have you ever though of selling your pictures to Wizards of the Coast? I bet you'd get some nice money out of it.

  • I think the jaw looks fine, here's my reasoning. The upper portion of the snout, including the nostrils and upper teeth is extremely foreshortened being pointed toward the viewer. The long lower jaw swinging down on the natural hinge of the mandible is showing a lot more of the teeth and inside of the mouth. People who aren't very familiar with foreshortening probably overlooked this and thought the upper and lower jaw needed equal measurements forgetting foreshortening. A pretty common mistake.

  • I belong to the minority you speak of and now I see why the bottom looked so oversized, it actually isnt, but its because the upper jaw looks undersized from that angle, and since the brain automaticly uses the higher point as a reference, the lower jaw seems oversized.

  • depends on the veiwer,

    i think its fine?

  • What did you use for the 3D?

did you have to re-draw it in every angle?

  • @SidneyFadeArtist Zbrush, probably. And no LOL of course not XD That would be awful...

  • Really, the bottom jaw looks long just because of the angle it's at. I see why you put this up to show that. :)

  • How did you make this, and how long did it take?

  • FREAKIN' AMAZING!

  • for everyone who thinks the jaw is oversized

Oh im sorry, i didn't know you have your own personal dragons to comapre too, what if dragons really were like that? you'd look like assholes :)

  • Get owned youtube

  • Maybe some people feel that the jaw is oversized because we can see less teeth on the top than on the bottom, which is perfectly normal due to the angle.

And thanks for the 3D model, showing that the bottom teeth aren't perpendicular to the jaw : I first assumed that they were and I felt like the jaw was twisted, now I can see that this is normal too.

    Perspective's so tricky ^^

Congrats for all the artwork !

  • It's all a matter of perspective. I noticed the 'oversized' jaw as well, and I wasn't going to comment on it (considering how spectacular the piece was) but am glad to see this very well-worded rebuttal... without saying a word. It really lets you *see* how the mind is fooled. :D

  • I love how this guy doesn't have an argument he just makes a 3-d concept and blows the mofo's straight out of there!

  • it's not sad that you had to make this video, it's sad that people are stupid. Great artwork buddy.

  • haha, i love that you made this vid, i think some people really just can't grasp the concept of perspective, this makes it easier to see for sure! =)

  • bigger?!?!? ive bin trying to make my dragons lower jaw to look EXACTLY like that cause its to small!

  • AMAZING !!!! NICE !!!!

  • Freaking awesome !! Your amazing dude!

  • This really reminds me of King Ghidorah, minus 2 heads.

  • fine, you win. that was what i was thinking about the whole time i watched it but i still think it looks really good.

  • The jaw looks large because people are having a hard time understanding that the top of the mouth(where the nose is located) is sticking out farther-it's purely a depth perception thing & people are failing to recognize that. The length of the lower jaw shows just how long the upper is. It's that simple.

    Btw, GREAT WORK!

  • @lordcliffton I totally agree! (Y) i love your artwork cgsbgs!! keep it up ;)

  • Well the bottom jaw does look huge, but to be honest, Dragons don't exist, so who says they HAVE to look realistic or proportional anyways.

I like your style very much, though I tried mimicking it and failed...

  • that was a awsome save ^_^

  • how the hell did you make that drawling 3d im flabbergasted

  • heh, now I'm being supercritical, but the 3D top jaw has elements that convey depth that the 2d lacks, the most obvious being more (and smaller) teeth. The lines on the top of the snout sweeping back to the brow are new, too, for the most part. Still awesome.

  • Awesome. I didn't question it myself, but being an "artist" myself, I could tell that people would misinterpret the image for being disproportional. It all has to do with angles and points of view~ Anywho, awesome vid, and perfect explanation!

  • I now see your vision. Thanks.

  • I actually like the jaw, it would look weird to me without it.

  • how the heck did you do that?.. man, I bet you'd be the BEST spriter in the world!

  • @0thevushi0 wat do u mean by ''spriter''?

  • @pokepals78915 computer graphics

  • no one should be able to tell you chris if somethings not proportionate or anything you have got to be the greatest artist of all times i love all your work and you inspire me to try harder on my work, youve used pens pencils 3d programs digital art everything you can do it all anyway you want ive whatched all your videos over and over each time i learn something new just wanna say thank you chris for sharing some of your greatest work with the youtube universe

  • Good luck!

  • It's just the perspective. The top part is more level with the view while the bottom is lower. It's not oversized.

  • its a dragon. it doesn't exist and therefore has no real proprtions. you could make the jaw 50 times bigger if you wanted. People have never seen a dragon before so how would they really know if they're right or wrong? anyways do you see them painting fantastic illustrations like this? Do they have anything to compare with it? im willing to bet no, so y are the questioning it?

  • .....Don't wanna cause an arguement, but there has been evidence found that Dragons were once, and possibly could still be alive. From what I've studied, and the people I've talked to....not gonna argue just wanted to throw that out.

  • @charmed6057 lol well atleast my 2nd part is true. half these people cant even come close to something like this so they shouldnt even be critiquing this let alone arguing with the actual artist.

  • @charmed6057

oh they do exist for sure and there have been reports of humans being killed by them. the komodo dragon that is.i dont beleave dragons actualy even existed. the closest thing that existed to a dragon was dinossaurs. legends comes from ppl seing things that they cant explain therefor they picture it in something that doesnt exist. take it for example the legends of sea mosnters that destroyed ships when it was actualy not visible rocks that did it.

  • Awesome work! Very talented. If the jaw looks bigger at all (which I don't think it does) it is probably because it is closer to the viewing point and the top jaw is more square on. Just perspective I think. Great job.

  • fuck i even got scare jajajajaja, marvelous job

  • nice

  • I have to say, you make awesome work. While I don't have any thing bad to say about the work, I can see why people view the bottom jaw as disproportional. The problem is not whether it's perfectly proportional in 3d, it's how the eye perceives it. Sometimes the eye will perceive perfectly proportional things as imperfect. The Parthenon is a perfect example of this. The Greeks compensated by adding imperfections in the structure so it appears perfect. Wiki it or something.

  • Apparently all the people who said it was too big or long didn't have basic visual skills.

  • holy crap....how many time did it take?

  • u actually made a 3 d texture for ur dragon... crazily talented

  • looks perfect to me.

  • haters just got owned

  • I still dont see how it is too big... his upper jaw is comming at you so it seems to look shorter but its not. Its fine.

  • It always looked fine to me, just a matter of perspective :)

  • i thought about it in the 1st vid but i figured it was the foreshortening of the top jaw that made it look small so i didnt complain it made sense in my mind

  • Who cares if its bigger? It looks fantastic! And besides, what if the dragon was born with an oversized bottom jaw? Why would you sit there and make fun of it! You'll hurt the dragons feelings!

  • @Coltranized Or get eaten :P

  • @HeatherpawandLionpaw as i always say "Never taunt a dragon, for you are crunchy and good with kethup"

  • @1414Eclipse Nice

  • @Coltranized um no it wouldnt hurt its feelings it would eat u xD hahaha and light u like a cigarette lols

  • @Coltranized and as we all know, one should never hurt a dragons feelings...

  • @Coltranized that is a good point, but it's jaw is normal sized. it's just the angle.

  • @Coltranized plus, the dragon would eat your face off with the "oversized jaw" ^_^

  • man i wish there would be suck an amazing animated dragon in a video game

  • It looks unusual in the final pic, but that is because of the overall positioning you have chosen, like a trick of the mind we think the lower jaw is very long, but it is actually the correct size.

  • Oh My AGAIN!!

  • Now that you mention it, it does seem like the bottom jaw is too large. I guess he just has severe underbite...

  • that was so awesome!!!

    but...

this vid scares me. i dont know why. maybe because the camera rotates around a completely still dragon with its mouth open and then goes to a nighttime pic of the same dragon flaming. and it's all so QUIET...

*shudder* it's awesome, again, but i should never have watched this at night....

  • @spyergirl4 how old r u.......its not scary

  • lol, i'm a teenager, and a really weird, nerdy one at that. i guess it's not really SCARY, but when i watched this it was about 1:00 in the morning and i had my back to the entire room i was in, which i don't really like. lol

  • i dont care what anyone else says... thats fucking amazing, i wish i could do something like that. :S

  • NICE

  • Holy fuck.

  • this guys awesome. he can do whatever he wants

  • @codybystereo he can atleast draw whatever he whants =)

  • Kinda reminds Me Dragon Smog from the cartoon "The Hobbit"

  • I wasn't worried about length due to the angle of the mouth, more or less it just looked like the bottom jaw was opened to far, it bugged the crap out of me

  • Oh my gosh, the 3D version of the dragon looks so freaking epic! WHy cant you become a game artist, oh my gosh, if you had dragons like this in a game im buying it !!!!!!!

  • bell brav strunz

  • i think the tip at the end of the bottom jaw makes it look bigger than it actually is because it sticks out past the teeth, i imagine that part longer than the top jaw even though the part of jaw with teeth is the same.

  • I did think the jaw was a bit to big as well. It was kind of bugging me until you finished the PS one. After finishing it and refining the details I really don't notice a thing, not even on this one.

  • the PS one got more evil eyes :)

  • IF there really is a proportional problem there, you could fix it by drawing slightly longer front row teeth. The jaw itself certainly looks fine, but the front teeth make it look like the dragon perhaps has an unusually thick lower lip? It can surely have that, not really a problem. So there's indeed not really an issue.

The art is awesome and the proportions seem good to me, but I somewhat understand the comments I think.

  • Hey there, Im a new subscriber to ur channel and I dont think its got anything to do with the bottom jaw being too big. Somehow youve managed to create an optical illusion, I get told I do that a lot with my pics! So its right but looks odd from that particular perspective. Great work on all ur stuff btw.

  • The bottom jaw is a tiny bit long, but not even noticeable until i read the description and saw you pointed it out.

  • I say it do look large. At 0:04 it seems to be more evident. I think its because of the base of the lower jaw is as wide or wider the the base of the upper jaw while the tip of the lower jaw is thiner than the tip of the upper jaw. Most animals I see have their lower jaw wider, as wide or narrower than their upper jaw in its entire length.

  • srry for my english lol

  • Yea, like there are so many scientific anatomy and physiology books on true reconstruction of dragons. More than likely it is the perspective that is throwing who ever off, that is why photographers go through rolls of film to find the best perspective shot. I have done 3D lightwave dragons but only at a distance. Great detail and texture. Keep it up!

  • how did u make that!?

  • XD kewl vid

  • I think the reason the bottom jaw looks so big is that, because they are so long, the top one is foreshortened in the picture, but the bottom one isn't, because it's going down, not out.

  • i can see why they say it's too big, from the angle it's at the top jaw appears smaller than it is but you can see in 3D that the jaws are the same size....

  • i think the jaw is perfect

  • oh awesome stuff man, grats, i wasnt sure, i kept looking and wondering, but i didnt want to criticise a masterpiece, glad u showed all the doubters =)

  • Well whatever critics say, i think it is awesome!

  • awesome!!!1

  • awesome ∞/5

  • First off, people are idiots if all they can do is criticize your work and not have a shred of talent themselves. Only the artist should criticize their own work and the rest should respect the effort you put into posting you awesome work.

I hope you will continue making these masterpieces for years to come and I would love to see your 3D one complete and maybe with a possible animation

  • I definitely agree that talentless "artists" shouldn't give advice. I think it is valid for them to give opinions (for example, "I think the original version/color/concept was better"), but to say things like "You should extend the shoulder because it is out of proportion" by novices is moronic.

However, saying that only the artist should be allowed to criticize their work makes no sense; people grow from constructive criticism. Am I going to give any? No, because he's 30 years ahead of me.

  • I agree with you. I just feel the only valid criticism would be from someone who has similiar or possibly better skills than Chris's, and I doubt there are many.

  • Thought I agree this is a very good artist, the fact that only the artist should criticize their own work and the rest should just admire it is ridiculous. How is anyone supposed to get better if they don't listen to what others have to say and only follow what they think is right?

Also, a person may not be the greatest artist, but that doesn't mean they can't see flaws in work.

  • you dont need to be awesome at art to say "this bit could change for the better!" average ppl can be right in seeing things are eg. disproportional! critisizing doesnt mean ppl dont think that it is a kick ass peice of art either. besides... real artists embrace like coondawgity said.. "constructive critisizm" from everyone.

  • yes that is true, the set of fresh eyes is always better in seeing the off things that the author usually gets used to in the process, but it is also true that wery often you get critisized for the wrong things by "ppl"s who have no idea how to draw a simple qube, since they have no feel for perspective...

  • oh. that makes sense. i didnt really think anything was wrong with it until i saw this video though.

  • OHHH.. I GET IT!!!

  • it looks sorta like one of king ghidora's heads

  • It's hilarious that people actually think they have the credentials to criticise this sketch.

  • OMG you are so amaisong!!!!

O.O wish i could make these paintings

  • wow nice work im looking forward to seeing the finished product. what programme did you use to make this?

  • they are not the same dragon so really it proves nothing!!

These are just my thoughts i hope they help people come to their own views.

Having critised this i think it's only fair that i say i think both the painting and 3D image are incredible pieces of art work and i am very much humbled by them.

  • Although they are not the same source, if they line up from the same perceived angle, and the video seems to work in that regard, then they can be compared. In my opinion this does show that the lower jaw is not over sized.

  • As for the painted one, i agree with the people that say the jaw looks out of perspective. In my opinion the amount of teeth the painted dragon has on its top jaw is far less than the bottom one which makes it look shorter. The top jaw also has a more box like shape than the bottom one which gives the impresion of it being shorter, the direction of the flame is also slightly off.

Making this video to prove the jaws are the same size is not adequete; even though the dragons look very similar

  • J'adore!! 1000 fois!!

  • Ha! I knew it was the angle! Way to show 'em.

p.s. your dragons pwn mine xD

  • thts prety awesome!!

  • omg.

I wish i could draw shuch things :P

    good job

how long time did it take?

  • If you look at 0:04 it is actually long. and slighty bent a little too much.

  • I think its the angle of the firestream that messes with the perspective. anyway this is a hell of a lot better than anything i could do so i'm not complaining. i liked watching the speedpaint.

  • hmm i am one that says the bottom jaw seems a bit long.

and after this i can see that it is not but it still LOOKS longer than it should to me.

but of course that's why i am commenting this amazing art and not creating it.

    Keep up the awesome work!

  • Exactly, its called foreshortening ...

    People really didn't understand :D

  • I REALLY like both versions of this dragon. Brilliant job working it into 3D.

If you ever finish modeling that dragon for 3D, I'm use Poser. I have a deviantart account with this username. I've wanted to do a battling dragons image for a while yet, but there's only really one quality model, and if I made one, I'd like it to have a unique quality. If you ever finish the model, do you think it'd be possible to rig it for poser and let me know? Thanks. :)

  • IN YOUR FACES!! all the ignorant people who thought they knew more then this great artist!

  • I honestly don't think the bottom jaw is undersized. I just think it's the perspective that makes it look like that.

  • I agree, when you look at the start of the video, you can see it's a good size, but just the angle you look t it, that makes it look long.

  • what is the sight you use to draw the dragons?

  • I just see the dragon as a crocodile, looks natural to me,

  • Anyone complaining about the jaw doesn't know crap(to be polite) about perspective and depth.

Your work's just awesome, keep at it.

  • Nice job! Amazing! I dont see a problem with the bottom jaw at all like some people say. Keep up the good work!

  • why cant you just accept the painting AS A WHOLE!!!!! " oh, the bottom jaw doesnt fit" SOOOO WHAAAAT!!!!!!! u try drawing that sort of detail in 90 mins!

  • well, the main thing to realise is that dragons arent real, so despite our own personal or accepted veiws of a dragon, this criticism is in vain. fair enough if he drew a dog with a huge lower jaw, because dogs are real so there would be a basis on which to argue. its like saying god is yellow, he aint real so it dusnt matter. good drawing tho.

  • even though you think that god or dragons arent real... does't mean you have to say your thoughts to the person who does. and you never know if dragons are or arent real

  • Dragons are real. Though fire-breathing seems weird. I don't think fire-breathing dragons have ever existed.

I mean, first they need the high temperature for the gas to burn, then they actually need to have that gas.

If you ask me, that seems weird.

And since there aren't any proof that any god exists, why can't he say that god doesn't exist?

I mean, you offend other people who don't believe in god by saying god exist. Though nobody blames you because of your belief. Stop being selfish.

  • I see the point. But since they probably would have evolved like lizards have, their bottom jaws probably wouldn't be oversized.

Though I don't think the bottom jaw is too big.

  • You are a real ARTIST!

  • HUH???? and how many dragons have you examined period? let alone their lower jaw.

  • I can see why they would criticize about the size of the lower jaw because it looks like the top is much smaller from that angle.

However, once the 3-D shows the side view, it look fine.

  • i agreee

  • as do i

  • *thumbs up*

  • i cant draw dragons especialy the thing that they have all them horns on them they always turn up wrong...xx

  • I think that the reason why people find the original 2D bottom jaw too long is that there are about 14 teeth on the whole length of it. The upper jaw has only about 7 teeth on the same length.

With the tricky perspective the teeth are the only references and with clearly less teeth in the upper jaw it easily looks a tad shorter.

  • Good job on the modeling. I think the snout is a tough nut. One might imagine it to have a short snout instead of a long one.

  • I think the thing that makes the lower jaw seem to big is actually that you captured the image in a very tricky, but still so interesting, angle =)

Love your work and the passion you put into it. Now make those tutorials for us and release the DvD asp ^^

  • dude u are insane.. this is madness

the original 2d one was good but this is beast......

  • you should draw wolves but not werewolves and at first i thought the jaw was tobig but it sorta fit in as you got further and further into it well done!!

  • All ur drawings are awsome!!!

mine arent even comparable to urs, how do u get so good???!!?

  • holy fuck! =O

  • I think the jaw suits the dragon perfectly. You are, as always, my favorite dragon artist. I tip my hat to you, Chris. =]

  • no need to explain "fore-shortening" to these slobs. The problem is the amount of teeth, too few in the original 2-d. Either way 10 fold the art I could produce, nice work.

  • It looks pretty good; the jaw may have a slight overbite, but that's how dragons are... not every creature on this planet wears braces. hah.

  • I STILL LOVE IT HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • i hate kids who critique when it really is just knit picking cause they want the attention. You obviously have years of exp. under your belt, and they have youtube watching skills, your a professional that actually gets paid for your talents, they poop in there pants when they sleep. I dont know. hhahahah goodwork.
