instead of overboost wich is such a general term in this case, i beleive the title should be "fuel cut" wich im 99% sure is what happend. those who fitted and adjusted there first cheapo bleed valve will know exaclty these symtoms
@luvu07 check opreration of wastegate actuator.. is it electonicly controlled or pneumatic. has it been doin this since you bought it.. have there been any electronics removed from the car the list is endless bro.. start with the simple things first. operation of all boost control componets.. be methodicle .. do you live near the sea salt destroys cast and other metals and if you car was idle for some time i would not be suprized if a bit of easing oil did the trick,
my s15 silvia was overboosting for 4 weeks straight drove it everyday knowing it was gonna blow lol but she took 4 weeks of hell before she went bang ! & it was on a hot day too after about an hour of straight driving it like i stole it lol. All from a jammed open wastegate haha, pulled hard though, Its okay though i was looking for a reason to rebuild the engine so i figured why not have some fun with it before i do haha
@imbeamin ok if i read your comment correctly.. tyou r stating that your sr20det was overboosting because the wastgate was stuck open.. im gonna fire my mechanic right now and get you to fix all my cars.. NOT
@imbeamin you do realize that if a wastegate becomes stuck open that the exact opposite will happen.. not puttin you down but your making false statement on the internet for every1 to see. now in the previous comment i stated i would fire my mechanic. false lol i am one. ans secondly it takes a wastegate to jam close or the be restricted in some form. evo's come to mind here.. for what your describing to happen.. that is all over and out. please respect you sr. little do u know how good they are
@nickernosher yes forgive me i made an error it was stuck shut.. and i do respect my car now like i said i wanted to rebuild thanks for your wisdom sir.
@imbeamin its all cool bro.. i was just imagining people jamming the wastgates open trying to get more boost lol.. beleive me youd be suprized what a chancer will chance if he thinks hes right. i kinda figured you made a mistake but i had to point it out its my job lol.. anyway im glad you sr is good and healthy now, with a forged bottom end and studded. you can really push a sr even on a bad ( badish ) tune.. have fun and drive safely sideways ;)
Its nice how ppl seem to believe a safety mechanism invented to cut boost is bad when it discovers "boost creep" and cuts boost saving you from spooling like twice as much PSI your car is built for. so i say bravo subaru and ty for making my car safe to drive!
@dubstrongvr6 how do you cut boost? its commom for the enrgy source of boost the be cut ( heat) / (fuel). fuel cut.. hks fcd is the cure for fuel cut but not necesarily the right thing to do!! if there is a way tho make boost vanish without cutting fuel i would like to know. seriously no joke ,mail me or somthing
It could be bad for the turbo if your specific turbo can't produce that much boost without running the risk of destroying the internals of the turbo...(i.e. a stock 14B turbo from a 1G DSM pushing 30 psi)
@krcooper76 its not so much that it bad for the turbo in a sense. obviously working a turbo exesevly over its operating range will cause wear and premature failure.. its in the case of wher a turbo is not upraded along with other work ( volumetric eficiancy of engine exeeds turbo ) it becomes a restriction. a larger turbo with larger piping and intercooler can run less boost and still perfom the same a lesser one thats being stretched to its limits. a larger turbo = less psi
Hey xp3rth4x0r, it's not bad for the turbo, it's bad for the engine. That was typical, serious detonation. It's the result of a very lean condition due to poor tuning. Detonation that bad can cause catastrophic failure of your engine (i.e. broken pistons, broken rods, etc)
@xp3rth4x0r it's bad for the engine, overboost happens when the wastegate doesn't open properly and more boost goes into the engine when the engine is not tuned for it
It 'overboosts' because the turbo wastegate cannot release pressure fast enough. It is common for stock turbo sti's, especially ones with catless exhausts. You can't really 'tune' it out since it is caused by mechanical limitations of the turbo, but a good tune can prevent it. Most people get rid of it by porting the turbo wastegate.
That was my car. It was running a Forced Performance Green turbo (3" inlet, 8 cm hotside setup for EWG) and all supporting mods. At its peak the car was probably good for a high 11s 1/4 mile.

Its funny when people buy a car like this and turn the boost up on the engines. Then see them buying new engines in about a week or so!

wasn't horrible there wasn't any audible compressor surge but a wastegate would solve the problem i think
wrx4life44 3 years ago
cant you just use an external wastegate to resolve the problem

what is overboost?
bamskyline 3 years ago
so much boos that the engine loses power
duffman61089 3 years ago
...
The ecu sees to much manifold boost and cuts fuel to prevent engine damage, to be exact.
infectrus 3 years ago 2
A little fuel cut eh? lol

@lemieuski STi originally have 305whp, why is just pulling 298whp?

@LeGozador No they don't, an 06+ has 305bhp measured at flywheel not wheels, older models don't even have that
