hmm, I'd say Sonic games, but that's too obvious. How about the Rocket Knight series? There are 4 of them. Rocket Knight Adventures, Sparkster (GEN), Sparkster (SNES), and the new(ish) Rocket Knight for XBLA / PSN. Both versions of Sparkster have the same name, but are very different games.

I don't know why people are so critical of Doki Doki Panic Mario. Sure, it was a reskin, but it was longer, harder and more ambitious than the original SMB or SMB2, which was actually just a rehashed SMB with "harder" (invisible blocks and fake warps everywhere) levels. For what it is, it was a step forward in the series. Oh, and the music and boss fights were more varied and memorable than SMW, which feels to me like the real oddball of the Mario franchise.
