This guy was the absolute King of Western Swing even before Bob Wills. He was even on the verge of becoming a major movie star. Then, he was convicted of brutally murdering his wife. He died of a heart attack in prison. Spade first recorded this song in the fall of 1945. Patti Page had a hit with it six years later in 1951. This was after her tremendous success in 1950 with Pee Wee King's "Tennessee Waltz," which is still one of the biggest selling records of all time.
My family came out from Colorado in 1942 & my brother & I sang Detour to all the way California! My parents must have been brave! Great song & great memories!
I heard this the 1st time when I was but a child,my mom was a country song nut and now I'm 63 yrs old and I go looking for them..They remind me of Mom which I lost young and they remind me of good times and love..and I cry like a baby every time.
My father was going to work on his California City developement as a Building Contractor until he went to prison and the project shut down. I believe all the curbed streets are still there and named after automobiles.
I grew up in the 50's on Sunshine Rancho (Where the Pavement Ends and the West Begins), in Canoga Park, ca. Listened to Spade Cooley weekly. After the murder trial we all went around singing his than popular song, I'm Walking The Floor Over You.
Good band leader, I like the version Bonapartes retreat with Careless love as the vocal. SCLOGSE1 I had thought Spade was sentenced to life in prison for stomping his wife to death? , maybe I am wrong (if I am; I'll update this post) but you said he had a new CD 4 years ago?
Er, Spade Cooley tortured his wife to death by beating, stomping and strangling her to death, but only after repeatedly burning her with a lit cigarette. Not to forget he made his 14 year old daughter Melody watch in horror. Yeah, while everyone admired and idolized this guy few knew of his alcoholism, violent temper, or prior arrest for attempted rape. Oh his wife did tell Spade that she was leaving him to join some 'free love' cult.
Got into Spade about a year ago...in a major way...went through tons of material...Joaquin Murphy is the man. He made a humble CD much later in life...around 4 years ago...worth finding...has that deep maturity to it. Got an original RCA color studio poster of Spade in his full glory at the closing of a famous Mill Valley record store...wonderful image...and a signed 8x10 of Spade. His story would make a great film.
I like Western Swing music - a nice, steady beat with lots of violins, acoustic and lap steel guitars. The two/three-part harmonies on this record are superb, which makes me think that there is something unique about the timbre of the American voice.
Love it!!! We do this song in my bluegrass band and it's always a hit!

"DETOUR" is written by Paul Westmoreland.
Elton Britt also had a great version of it back in 1946.
