My only point if you need it simplified is that you mistake your personal taste for some sort of objective truth about musical quality. I just don't get it. Maxwell always gave Kate Bush her due credit by mentioning this song as her's and by recognizing her as a great artist. Besides, maxwell too is a tremendous musician who is one of the best neo soul singers the world has ever seen. 2 great artists, two great yet different takes on the song.
i was one of the first to meet her. she signed a fold out poster from a 12" vinyl record i bought in nyc that day. i told her, "you've made a real difference in my life". she replied, you're sweet, and shook my hand. and signed the poster, to jim, with love, kate bush. i have that poster, framed to this day. one of the high points of my life. there were over 2,000 people there that day.
Loved it since I saw "love & basketball", if it wasn't for Maxwell stating that Kate Bush was the author & original singer i'd still think it was his, my respect for Kate lyrics & enjoyed her version, but Maxwell just deliver's it better in my opinion.

She's one of the few artists I know who can go away for 12 years, put out an album with VERY LITTLE promo and still have it sell & chart worldwide. I knew of Kate before Maxwell did the cover of this song and of course she is the original singer and amazing, but Maxwell's version is equally good in my opinion. Peace everyone, regardless of who sings it better; I would think the emotions conveyed in this beautiful work speaks for itself. Preference does not determine. It is a preference, and your right to feel. This is a compelling song of reflection and possible redemption. There's more to learn from this than who sang it better.

Would just like to point out that it was Kate Bush that wrote this song.
So no singer will ever be able to put as much "soul" into is as she does. It was her emotions, memories and experiences that she poured into paper and music to create this.
Also, while I'm sure Maxwell is great, those of you saying "he's just more famous" are forgetting the fact that in the UK, we've never heard of Maxwell.
While Kate Bush is a national treasure.

Just watched the Maxwell version as loasda people were saying it was better. The Maxwell version is a complete load of arse. The emotional content Kate puts into this song is amazing, and it is her voice that has made this song what it is! Maxwell ruined it, though in the process made Kate look better.

She's one of the few artists I know who can go away for 12 years, put out an album with VERY LITTLE promo and still have it sell & chart worldwide. This version is known as KATE's (rightfully) WORLDWIDE. Maybe Maxwell put his stamp on it in the US, but that's really the only place.

I love both versions~ Kate's and Maxwell's. They are both gorgeous. All this talk about who does it better is nonsense. It's all opinion. Kate wrote the song, so I assume that it came from life experience and that she understands it better. But Maxwell puts an amazing twist on it and they both sing it with so much feeling. I enjoy listening to both versions.

I knew of Kate before Maxwell did the cover of this song and of course she is the original singer and amazing, but Maxwell's version is equally good in my opinion. I'm not going to defame one artist or the other, but respect both their talents. It's like Dolly Parton's original "I Will Always Love You," that she wrote & sang, but Whitney Houston did a cover. At the time she had the more powerful voice, but both were soulful and elegant.None of these artists slandered each other. Enjoy the music!
