My uncle said he's in this film as a communist handing out pamphlets or something like that. I'm not so sure tho, i didnt manage to find him when i last watched the film.
i am not a communist the french revoltiion was my revolution i am totally bourgeouse and would have been happy just to kill aristocrats and priests and fight with napoleon
i think the russian revoluton was an isealist endevor that was spoiled by communists anarchists and social revolutionaries and liberals were trying to form a democracy and the bolcheviks ruined it and caused a massacer, its just so sad that anti semites
does it mention anything of the massacres of russians?starvation? the fhe fact it was a jewish overthrow of russia, confiscation of wealth? if not it is as it was then all journalists ignored and didnt report the truth of what went on,as to richard you are an ignorant, think you are fascile with the turn of the phrase.you might like to read soem history before you make any comment on things you know nothing about.which as you know only folls and imbeciles do.
so you belive hollywood has ever put out a real account of history. From your remarks here I think you know very little aboutr it and base it on this movie as your emotional responses are reactionary and programmed (perceived threat from comments)I know for a fact these correspondents covered up the truth of the commie revolution but the president and advisors knew it and in fact helped it.
wait wait wait, umm lets see I have not seen this movie and stopped clipat the old bag.there will be no mention of the "the reds" being commie jews who take over russia, massacre millions, confiscate all the wealth of the former monarchs and continue to do it calling it socialism, the jewish creation of the gulags the cheka and these little ctretins come back and lie about it.when all hi level govt knew anyways and indeed assisted them in it.pathetic.
4:38 - That's Henry Miller. Priceless footage. I wonder if Beatty has anymore of this footage that wasn't put in the film. Must be. Priceless. Just priceless. Henry Miller -- for me -- is one of the great American writers that no on reads anymore. What a rich talent. I recommend 'Tropic of Capricorn' most of all. What an imagination. And what a portrait of New York in the early part of the 20th century.
Something other than stale romance flick platitudes, like Reed hitting his head on the chandelier all the time, and the dog trying to get in when they're making love. What has all of that to do with Bolshevism? If Eisenstein had lived long enough, just think of the movie he might've made from Reed's life!
Those "stale romance flick platitudes" were tastefully done. They do not in ANY WAY detract from the movie's themes or overall thesis: that America does not tolerate individual thinkers and treats romanticism as a relic from a bygone era.
The contrasts that arise in Capital "R" Romantic art are far more complex than those in existential works.
Even if the chandelier and dog scenes hadn't been integrated well into the narrative (which they have been), they would not have detracted from the rest of the film's sophisticated character studies or thematic content.
If that is the best complaint you can come up with, then you are quite superficial indeed.
It was made in Hollywood, if that's what you mean. But everything from the subject matter to the structural framework of Reds reeks of independent cinema.
Romanticism is not a flaw. But in today's era of faux-existential garbage, the masses have been conditioned to think that emotions are not worth exploring.
@Silverwire100 Is that what the masses have been conditioned to think? I know they've been conditioned to think something, but I didn't think it was that. I mean, I never turn on the TV and hear anyone imploring me not to explore my emotions.
Society has become a business. Rationality rules supreme over emotions. Superficiality rules over substance. Money rules over everything.
Emotions get in the way of business. We're conditioned by what the media and entertainment LEAVE OUT of their programming as much as what they PUT IN.
@Silverwire100 Will you give me a break? I glanced at your favorite films list. Very admirable, particularly for a kid your age. You need to live a little more, so as to learn to appreciate the interconnectedness of society, emotions and business. Don't forget that the great films you admire so much are the product of a capitalist system. Also remember that Beatty indoctrinated his crew so successfully with Red philosophy that they ended up striking, which almost derailed production of REDS
Reds does not support communism. It attacks the United States' intolerance of people with views that differ from the norm. It is also more a product of the Renaissance period than of the 1980s. Even the panoramic cinematography conveys this.
In regards to your anti-Hollywood tirade, I pose the following question. What difference does it make where or when a movie is made? An individual movie should be judged on its own terms.
"You need to live a little more, so as to learn to appreciate the interconnectedness of society, emotions and business."
Maybe I've lived more in my 18 years than your 62.
I believe that every area of society should be judged separately and on their own terms.
And if anything in our society needs to go, it's the self-regulating market. Only humans could be stupid enough to let an abstract system dictate every factor of their lives. Aliens must be shaking their heads.
Business falls under the umbrella of society. Business, which is secured solely in abstract values, should never be treated as a separate factor on par with society. They simply aren't equal in terms of substance.
@goback3spaces with all do respect dude, i agree with what you say but to call it "pure hollywood" sound a little too much. It seems you're saying that, without the witnesses the movie is just Fast & the Furious...
Reed said the war was about profits. He was wrong, it was about something worse.
It was pride.
Such a huge difference between 1914 and '39.
In '39 the attitudes from the man on the street, especially Britian and France was, "Let's get this over with."
In 1914 it was, "Oh please don't have this war be over until I can join in it."

"I glanced at your favorite films list. Very admirable, particularly for a kid your age."
Ageism is a growing problem in Western society. Older does not necessarily mean wiser. For all you know, I could be the next Mozart.
Stupidity is rampant today among people of all ages and backgrounds. It knows no bounds.
If one can intelligently justify their preferences, that is all that matters. It doesn't matter if that person is 15 or 95.
Silverwire100 1 year ago
@goback3spaces
Beatty is a one-of-a-kind actor. He's intelligent, for one thing. He's mastered every major filmmaking hat, for another.
Sure, he's not up to par with Welles, Bergman, or Hitchcock as a director. But he's a pretty damn good director!
