Some of my friends and I have already started learning this for next year, about one month and we are in 3 minutes in cleanly. Marimba 1 part for the win. :D
The camera is at fault here, it doesn't really portray the sound as it really was. Secondly, it is actually a piece for banjos, as that's what Bela Fleck originally played this on. Thirdly, the arrangement had to be choosen per what the UIL list stated for class I ensembles- there are no steel pan ensembles on our UIL list.
Xylo player needs to stop faking. We're playing this in our middle school right now (I'm playing xylo) and the part isn't that hard. Don't slow down, and need more dynamics. The conductor and music make it look kinda cheesy. (We're doing it without either).
You do realize this is year old video correct? I understand that music and conductors make look cheesy, but in the end, having a solid performance with those in place is much prefered over a bad performance. Also consider that the camera used is not very good at picking up very much in the way of dynamics and shaping. Besides, they were given a 1 at state solo and ensemble, so all was well.
You can't blame the camera for a bad performance. And if you know the piece well enough you should be able to play it well without a conductor of music. It's not that hard to get a 1 in solo and ensemble:once I faked 3 lines of a one page solo and still got a 1--and the rest of it wasn't too great either.
I'm not blaming it for a bad performance, the guys in the video were sophomores and freshman, none of which have much experience with keyboards. I didn't play in this ensemble, I just videotaped it. To get a one a the TMEA State S&E is much harder than regional stuff, and that performance was far better than this video. The judges on the state level here kill people for bad performances.
Not bad! This piece is a tough one when played at the right tempo, you guys were just a little bit under it, but you did it at a tempo where the notes are rhythmically accurate, and it worked for you. Even if it wasn't your best performance (as I'm led to believe by the about comments), you did a fine job with it.
agreed with some points..but you cant just add what you want to an ensemble x]..i personally dont see how cymbal give this ensemble more life...the way is to play with more expression
I have the vibes part. Not the HARDEST but it's hard for me because.it's my first time playing four mallet.

guy in the white shirt in front...your left arm is moving too much...use more wrist.
It's a good piece but the mallet selection could be better...such as softer mallets...
And if you had a bigger pit, cymbal work would work great with this...it would give it more color

marimba guy...play in the right octave.
i could use a little more dynamics.
overall though, great performance. i was happy to see that not everyone's using INCREDIBLY hard mallets.
