The main musical theme of “Lord of the Dance” is the old Shaker song “Tis a gift to be simple”, written and composed by Elder Joseph Brackett in 1848.
One of the many adaptations is the dominating theme in Aaron Copland's score for the ballett “Appalachian Spring” (1944).
Sydney Carter adapted the music for the hymn “Lord of the Dance”, portraying Jesus' life and mission as a dance (1963).
In 1996 the music and the Carter lyrics were used by Ronan Hardimen for Flatley's “Lord of the Dance”.
I'm a fan of riverdance, but not of Flatlys big ego. It became to American at the end.
But nevertheless he is the greatest dancer!And this performance was just in the middle, a touch of Irish was still there, but the American bigger then life was approaching......
the return last year was poor from flatley. Lots of changes including the finale right at the end they don't raise there legs and hold it there, the magic has gone and hes cut the cast down to about 15 dancers. This is just pure magic!!! I ordered this one today for 6 pound, the 2011 lord of the dance is round about fifteen. If you decide to buy 2011 id advise you not too.
I first saw this around 1996 and even after 15 years, this is STILL, by far, my FAVORITE rendition. The energy in that theater must have been powerful. I am sure if the audience could have, they would have requested they dance "one more time" over and over and over!!! The only thing about having such a great dance routine is its hard to rise to that level of excellence again. Thank you for posting this video!! :-)
Never knew Fatley was American until now. But both his parents were Irish, so if he considers himself Irish, he's Irish! I was born in England of a Scottish father and Welsh mother with Irish grandparents so consider myself Celtic. The land of which you are born is not as important as your heritage I have found. This is why the English will always be German.

It makes me sad to see Lord of the Dance, doesn't have the same charm and Irish spirit of Riverdance. I don't see why a man of his talent needs all the gimicks - its about the dance, not the flashing lights and the disproportionate ego
@eithnejack i personally think lord of the dance is flatleys finest work. Riverdance was good but this is much better and so called gimicks, make the show something even more spectacular than riverdance.
@soraseetan Well i suppose that's a matter of opinion. I grew up watching irish dancing so for me, Lord of the Dance seems to be simply an Americanised version of a show that is intrinsically Irish. He might have Irish blood but he's an American at heart, no doubt about it
@eithnejack See i like the theatrics that are presented in Lord of the Dance, because i feel it helps tell the story in a much better way than say Riverdance. I do not see the Amercianised aspect you speak of in Lord of the Dance. However in Flatleys later performances i.e Celtic Tiger, Feet of Flames, you can see a heavy americanised influence, hence why those two are my least favourite.
@soraseetan However saying that i think that we should treat Riverdance and Lord of the Dance as two individual shows as opposed to comparing them, because they both differentiate from each other in quite an extreme way, with positive and negative aspects in their own right. As you put it Riverdance adheres to customary traditional irish dancing, whereas LOTD does adhere but uses more theatrics in order to tell a story and attempts to draw people in.
@soraseetan I will be honest and say that in Riverdance, the first time i watched the show, i had no clue what was going on with the exception i was sure Flatley was trying to dance the fandango.
@soraseetan I suppose it all depends on what you take out of both shows. I would imagine Flatley choreographed Celtic Tiger with a certain demographic in mind - i guess i dont fit into that demographic, although there's no question as to the talent in both shows. Maybe they are just telling two different stories as for me riverdance isn't a story, more of a portrayal of spirit and power. It's good to know the opinion of other people though.
Incredible talent, incredible stamina -- WHY did he slip into thinking that he was channeling Elvis? His dancing wasn't "broke"; why did he "fix" it? He did not NEED to go Cecil B. anyone looking for REAL Irish Music/ Dancing, I suggest you look else where... watch?v=Peg9SJJey9g or user/clarebannerman?feature=watch are good starters
And anyone who has a problem with European-descended Americans living here, well, fine - we'll leave, but we'll take every inch of civilization with us when we go. This place will be left in the Stone Age that we found it in. Is that what anyone really wants?
@ladylejean215 No disrespect, but that's a ludicrous thing to say. Even if you left, do you really think you're the owners of knowledge and what people call "civilisation"? Do you think Native Americans will just forget what was brought to them and return to their pre-colonised state? And, just as importantly, who says Europeans or European-Americans are the only civilisation around anyway? Native Americans had advanced societal structures and laws before Europeans - technology isn't everything.
@EvenflowBlack Well, if they don't like their pre-colonized state, then they should be very grateful we came over here and pulled them out of it. So my statement still stands. You clearly aren't American yourself; you spell "civilization" with an S. So maybe you don't know things about pre-colonization Native society like we do here, such as the fact that women had pretty much no rights, men could marry multiple women, and some tribes had human sacrifice that Europeans brought to an end.
@ladylejean215 That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Just because I'm not from your country, I couldn't possibly have read up on the subject? "Pulled them out of their pre-colonised state"? You mean slaughtering millions of them by deliberately infecting blankets with smallpox and selling them to the natives? Stealing their land? And, by the way, the colonists don't exactly have the moral high ground when it comes to the US - women didn't have rights either until the 20thC (cont.)
@EvenflowBlack Europeans unified this nation, and it has remained unified since. It took Europeans to do this - the Natives weren't doing it. And before you mention our Civil War of the 1860s, please note that today in 2011 we're still one nation. The Confederate states LOST. Some people say "the South will rise again" to which my fiance, who is from Indiana, says, "Yeah, just far enough to kiss a Yankee ass." The Natives had centuries to get it together and they didn't.
@ladylejean215 and what about the Witch Hunts? Not to mention slavery, and the pretty evil treatment of black soldiers during the Civil War. So if you're looking to paint the European colonists as "the enlightened liberators", try telling it to someone without a clue, because you're getting no sale here.
"The Natives had centuries to get it together and they didn't." What, and it was the Europeans' job to go over there and "punish" them for it by killing and displacing most of them? Please.
@ladylejean215 Don't for one minute think that I'm saying you should feel ashamed or anything - you're born where you are, and you make of your life the best you can; if you've done that, then all power to you, and I hope you're doing well. Just don't make the mistake of thinking that "what is" is the same as "what seems to be", and remember those who've suffered for what you've come to benefit from, and don't dismiss them. Trust me - I'm British, and I know the crap we've pulled in our time.
Amazing! All of them; I actually have this on VHS. BTW, fannyfarter, where do you get American Indians in a video discussion about Flatley? You been smokin' dat stuff? lol
I've seen Riverdance once on stage, watched the video numerous times. Love it. I've never seen Lord of the Dance, any part of it, till now. What I see is impressive, when I can actually see it. The cutting of this video is horrid. You can't follow the dancing for the quick-cutting. It's purely for effect. So thumbs up to Michael and the dancers—though the encores would be more impressive if they weren't the same thing every time—but big thumbs down for the editing.
I remember as a child i used to watch this on VHS, i used to sit and blow kisses to the t.v and shout 'Love You Michael' seeing this video brings back so many memories!!! Thankyou for posting this :-)

@rebelgabriel4308 Erm - I don't know if you know this, and I apologise if I've misunderstood you, but the original melody is from the Christian song, "Lord of the Dance". Try looking under that? You may not find it as it was performed in this video, but it's a popular song, and you'll find the melody most places.
I know this dosn't belong to this video at all. But i have been searching for this song for a long time. It's also a "step-song", but it's more likely a techno/dance step song, most likely in the years between 96's-02's. The video has this man stepping in the start, then before the music starts he like screams "STEP!" - and he is dancing amongst lots of pipes, and also pours a bottle of water over himself. Hope some1 can help me :) - <3 to Michael
It may be wrong to like something so much! lol I love Lord Of The Dance. I was taken to a show when I was a kid and have been in love ever since. They are so amazing! <3
ive met him. was a very young dancer and he was an ignorant prick, i respect him as a buisnessman, saw a gap in the market and played to it. he is a tap dancer with irish step thrown in. daire nolan is the best dancer ever, flatley an over rated, ego unflated prick!!
@SuperFannyfarts Last time I checked you did not have to be born in the country of origin to have a love and appriciation for the dance it produced and Michael Flatley deffinantly has a love and gift for Irish step. This makes my Irish grandmother proud.
@SuperFannyfarts My husband was not born in france but consideres himself French because his father is French. My best friend was born in England and lived there the first few years of her life but her parents are American so she consideres herself American. It's less about where you where born and more about your haritage.
@SuperFannyfarts All i was trying to say, is that even if your born in one country doesn't make you less of who you really are. I was born in America and i'm half Irish and half German. Does that mean i'm 100% American?!? Unless Flatley or i are Native American then you can call us that. No need to make yourself look like an bigot on Youtube.......Grow up....really? Really?
@rebelgabriel4308 I was born in Washington DC. I'm 100% American. I have Germanic & Gaelic ancestry, yes. But I'm not German. I'm not Irish. I'm not Scots. I'm not French. I'm completely American. I AM a native of this country and no other. My ancestors paid their way into this country by working in it, helping build it, fighting for it in wars, and eventually being buried here. Blood, bone & soil - and this land is every bit as much ours as it is anyone else's.
@ladylejean215 Thats my point!! People are whining about Flatley not being Irish because he was born in America. Your European, If your a Native American THEN your 100% American. Your american because you live in America. WHY DO PEOPLE FEEL THE NEED TO DEFEND THEIR IGNORANCE?!?!
I'll tell you what really scares me about Michael Flatley. He is too good! His brilliance will never be seen again. I hope everyone fully appreciates his ability, skill and determination. He is awe-inspiring. There will never be another Michale Flatley. I'm glad he was here in my time.
@Natashaaaaaaaa I agree, this seems more about the stage production and his ego rather than the grace of the dance which is really quite beautiful when done with restraint.
Unbelievable. <3

The chorus, which can be sung to this finale, is;
Dance, dance, wherever you may be

I know this dosn't belong to this video at all. But i have been searching for this song for a long time. It's also a "step-song", but it's more likely a techno/dance step song, most likely in the years between 96's-02's. The video has this man stepping in the start, then before the music starts he like screams "STEP!" - and he is dancing amongst lots of pipes, and also pours a bottle of water over himself. Hope some1 can help me :) - <3 to Michael

ive met him. was a very young dancer and he was an ignorant prick, i respect him as a buisnessman, saw a gap in the market and played to it. he is a tap dancer with irish step thrown in. daire nolan is the best dancer ever, flatley an over rated, ego unflated prick!!

Désolé, mais ça me gêne...

The best thing is ... he's not even Irish !
SuperFannyfarts 3 months ago
@SuperFannyfarts Yes he is!
rrbond07 3 months ago
@rrbond07
He was born in Chigago, USA.
Last time i looked at my world atlas that wasn't in Ireland !!!
SuperFannyfarts 3 months ago
@SuperFannyfarts Last time I checked you did not have to be born in the country of origin to have a love and appriciation for the dance it produced and Michael Flatley deffinantly has a love and gift for Irish step. This makes my Irish grandmother proud.
orbitalchild 3 months ago
@orbitalchild
erm i didnt say that ... i was responding to rrbond07 who said he IS Irish , when he was born in Chicago USA.
Thats like saying someone born in Greece is Scottish ! ..... duuuuuuuuurrrrrrrr.
SuperFannyfarts 3 months ago
@SuperFannyfarts My husband was not born in france but consideres himself French because his father is French. My best friend was born in England and lived there the first few years of her life but her parents are American so she consideres herself American. It's less about where you where born and more about your haritage.
orbitalchild 3 months ago
@orbitalchild
yada yada yada .... you know you are wrong so just accept it.
By the way, have you ever tried spellchecker ? ... ( haritage = HERITAGE , consideres = CONSIDERS ) etc.
:)
SuperFannyfarts 3 months ago
@SuperFannyfarts The last time i looked Chigago is spelled Chicago. The guy is 100% Irish blood who are you to say other wise?
rebelgabriel4308 2 months ago
@rebelgabriel4308
The last time I looked, anyone born in America is American not Irish !
Your argument means that if someone is born in Russia but does Flamenco dancing then that means they are Spanish ??? ......Grow up.
SuperFannyfarts 2 months ago
@SuperFannyfarts All i was trying to say, is that even if your born in one country doesn't make you less of who you really are. I was born in America and i'm half Irish and half German. Does that mean i'm 100% American?!? Unless Flatley or i are Native American then you can call us that. No need to make yourself look like an bigot on Youtube.......Grow up....really? Really?
rebelgabriel4308 1 month ago
@rebelgabriel4308 I was born in Washington DC. I'm 100% American. I have Germanic & Gaelic ancestry, yes. But I'm not German. I'm not Irish. I'm not Scots. I'm not French. I'm completely American. I AM a native of this country and no other. My ancestors paid their way into this country by working in it, helping build it, fighting for it in wars, and eventually being buried here. Blood, bone & soil - and this land is every bit as much ours as it is anyone else's.
ladylejean215 1 month ago

Michel Platley is splendid, magical, congratulations, the whole performance in traveling and fascinates
xarouladali 4 months ago
This is too flashy, with the normal river dance he at least kept it simple, there's too many light shows, you can't see the dancers properly.
Natashaaaaaaaa 4 months ago
@Natashaaaaaaaa I agree, this seems more about the stage production and his ego rather than the grace of the dance which is really quite beautiful when done with restraint.
