god the only reason I'm watching this is that Trompe got me back into pixies and reallly music in general after several years of emotional draught, i had doolilttle and some of their other stuff but just couldn't get back to that place but listening to Navajo Know and how they were starting to do weird psychadelic experiments , i swear until i watched this i thought "its okay that they broke up since trompe was their first album when they were stilll raw and experimental until they went pop"
some great things came out of there break up though. Frank Black, The Breeders and i bet other stuff i dont even know about. Now there back togther and i really hope they do a show here sometime, it would be my dream to see them play.
You can't say that The Pixies are great because they have such a unique sound and range of styles, and then complain when they put out an album that sounds different. I'm being honest when I say that I like all of their albums and will sometimes prefer Trompe Le Monde (for example) over something like Doolittle. A band with their talent should not be confined to one genre or sound!!!
Trompe Le Monde was one of their best, what the fuck are they talking about? The best was yet to come. But it was not to be, at least we have what they gave us and that's enough.
@m579064 ... Wheat he means is that ABBA was fresh and totally defined something new... In that sense, so did the Pixies... They came along and defined a new format.
i appreciated this documentary, but they really push the fact that the first albums were the best and the later albums were not nearly as good, i think bossanova was a good album.
The Pixies are a lot like Haley's Comet. A band of this caliber only comes around once in a GREAT while. When they do, they are really a sight to behold! Thank you soooo much Pixies!!! I will treasure your music forever.
Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, NYDOLLS, all of them amazing...the Pixies also....so unique, and so genuine..........some musicians just have that must-have-sold-their-souls-to-the-devil-to-be-that-good quality.......or maybe they all just truly love making music.
the problem with Trompe Le Monde is that it's awfully front-loaded , the first 7 songs are instant Pixies classics the rest...well, they do grow on you, but aren't particularly memorable.
And I really love all of their albums, can't really rank them. I think it's about expectation - if you're a fan of the Pixies and then Tromple Le Mond comes out and it's not really what you expect of them - then you're dissapointed. But when I got to know the Pixies I already have the full discography, and find it easier to accept Trompe as the harder side of that group. Totally underrated.
I don't understand all the lukewarm feelings people have about Trompe Le Monde. It would be nice if Kim was more noticable on there. But other than that, I hardly see it as an indication of them slumping.
This is the first and last time i'm going to speak of this subject...It was an orgasm of music that ocurred in the 80's, it started vibrantly and intense,...it had moments of rhythmic beauty,...and ended leaving you solemn, questioning your purpose, your existence here and in space. And you will never be able to repeat that orgasm again. A human sociological movement. Keep it in your memories and cherish it.
i loved surfer rosa the most and dolittle was awesome. tromp le monde and bossanova were less awesome but still had some extraordinary tracks.. U mass, tame, planet of sound, alec eiffel, tromp le monde, somethign against u
I agree but sometimes my opinion changes between which one is the best. Sometimes I think Come on Pilgrim is the best. Like I said it changes from time to time.
trompe le monde isnt my fav of theirs but i think it was totally amazing album, i dont understand why so many dislike it...Bossnova is definitely their worst and yet it was still a good album.but nothing can touch their first three records.

The Pixies, the sound of a trendy, indie, gutless, limp-wristed, wanna-be socialite farting a whole lot of melodic hot air. Where are your minds indeed!
Ugh, obviously the makers of this doc didn't have the right to use any other Pixies material than that *one* gig in 1988. Kinda deflated the whole thing as I had actually hoped to get to hear some of the later stuff as it was being brought up. Guess I'll have to do a search or two on YouTube...

i love all their stuff. I think there's some real magic on bossanova (hangwire, ana, alison, and VELOURIA for god's sake!)
And TLM has some fucking gems (eiffel, palace of the brine, motorway to roswell)
They hit a deeper emotional level on their later stuff that isn't as frequent on the first ones...
