  • I done 10 rows of increase and since then I have added 9 rows and its huge. What have I done wrong? If you have twitter I could tweet you a photo of it? thanks xx

  • @What yarn are you using ? and what hook ?

  • @bobwilson123 I used a 4mm hook and 8 ply yarn, I finished the beanie by using decrease stiches =) I did do 12 instead of 6 at the start, Could that be why? Sorry I've only been crocheting like 3 weeks so I really don't know much about it. I've almost finished another beanie and it done the same thing. x

  • @VampireGirl3654 hmm all i can think of is that there are to many increase rows.. did you stop making increases after you 10 or so rows of increase ? Its wouldnt mater if you use 6 or 12 stitches, I would do less rounds of increase on the next one.. i have a video called rescue a hat , that will give you hints if you need to make it fit

  • Thank you :) I made a beanie for my baby

  • Ughh I understand a lot of your other videos but this one..keep trying..keep trying :)

  • @viola23dlt Hi, where are you getting lost ?

  • Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! I was trying to teach myself how to crochet three months ago and this video was the first thing I was able to make successfully. I was able to give everyone hats for the holidays, and they were all impressed, even my crochet-veteran mother-in-law :) Your videos are so much easier to follow than all the others I've found, so now I am learning all kinds of things with your other videos. Thank you!!

  • It came out perfectly! Thank you so much!!!

  • is there a written pattern for this??

  • Thank you so much for your awesome video!! You definitely are a fabulous teacher! :)

  • nearly finished my hat thank u ever so much lots of love amina x

  • I have a question, im not sure if you have answered it or not. But when you start the sides and you do one in each stitch, when you get back to your marker, do you do an increase or just move your marker and continue? I attempted without an increase and it turned out really funky looking. lol I love the viedo!

  • @audreycolleen no increases :)

  • Hey Clare! Thanks for reply!

I believe I'm going to switch hooks (I've found "Boye" brand).

Also, I'm going to include a little pull on the first pull thru to make that troublesome loop larger - in order for a smoother final pull thru.... thanks again for attention on this matter!

You make crochet possible for me to understand - could'nt DO it without YOUR INSTRUCTION!! having fun.....!.... :) .....Ms H

  • @riviera5150 :)

  • Is there a way to knit (with straight needles) a basic beanie? All the hat knitting tutorials make hats I think are ugly :-(

  • @bigbambo0m Sorry i dont know becasue i cant knit :(

  • @bigbambo0m You can knit hats in the round using circular needles....that way you don't get seams. :)

  • @bobwilson123 thank you! i'll give this a try :)

  • Your awesome. This is the first thing I attempted to make and it turned out so good.. I paid for a cd and book from walmart to teach me how to crochet and you did 100 times better. Thanks so much, keep up the good work :)

  • @Tamaralp1988 WOW thank you so much for that comment! I believe books are written by expersts so how on earth is a newbie going to understand it !

  • Hey Ms Clare Thank You very much for your videos! Just wondering if you could shed light on why my hook always gets stuck on the second loop (from my hand) as I do the final pull through on the half double stitch.

I look at that loop and its tighter than the others on my hook ...just wondering.

I am working on your white beanie and I think you are AWESOME!

    I'm having fun also!

  • @riviera5150 Mine does that too.. but im still a beginner. maybe its a learned thing. But would def. love the advice if you have any :)

  • @riviera5150 Your Welcome ! hmm without "seeign what you are doing" when your hook gets stuck, it maybe to do with tension or Do you turn the hook so that it is pointing down before you pull though all loops? Also it could be your hook , i have heard people say that there are different styles of hooks (the hooky part) and this can sometimes snag on stitches :)

  • Can't thank you enough for this. Having so much fun crocheting!

  • this is wayyy too dast for me to follow. i gave up :/

  • @gripgrlz Thanks for your feedback

  • lol... 14:26 let me just jab my thumb into fake baby's mouth.

  • Thank you so much for this demonstration! I just finished my first crochet hat following your instructions here. I made it too big for my head, but I put a draw string through it to make it fit a little more snuggly around the bottom. I need the link for the head sizes you mentioned in your video. Does it say how many rounds to do for the crown for different head sizes before you start to do the sides? That would help a lot. Thanks again :^) Where can I send you a pic of the hat I made?

  • @mayberrydaze the website is called bevs country cottage .. you can send me a photo to bobwilson123 @ iprimus.com.au

  • help what do i do i dont get what you are saying where are some patterns online i can use to make a hat or headband could you look for one and tell me.

  • @jesusgirl13johnson at what point in the video do i say it ?

  • HI where can i find the written pattern on the website???

  • @lilithmoon1979 there isnt one yet :)

  • @bobwilson123 awww bummer.. you are such a big help !!! btw i have finished my scoodie yesterday (made it first time) which i started last sunday! costed me 1 night (friday on saturday i went to bed at 4am lol) but i finished it on sunday ... i just couldnt stop cause i was in such a mode i didn't want to stop lol... and now im starting on my 2nd one but im also trying to do a men's basic beanie... which i never made before.. for my dad... your vids are so helpfull!! thanks!!

  • mine is starting to get wavy... i'm at the 4 HDC, 1 HDC inc and i went with the flatter top 12 HDC beginning... what could i be doing wrong? i dont think its my yarn and kneedle? The cropchet needle is 4 mm and my yarn is just regular 4 ply

either way looks to me its unfixable, so i guess i'm going to have to unravel this one! but in case for next time, what exactly could i be doing wrong here!

  • @ariesfairies I would start by using a 5mm or 5.5mm hook, the 4mm is to small for the yarn :) see how that goes

  • My hat seems to be just getting wider - even after i stopped increasing after the 6th or 7th... (it looks like i'm making somewhat of a rug or circle of cloth). i've made about 5 rows of single stitches and it looks just wide. Any suggestions?

  • @StrangeSundays what yarn and hook are you using ??

  • @bobwilson123 I honestly dont know. Haha, it's my mom's stuff. the hook looks slightly thicker than yours, and the yarn is simply regular yarn. This is my first time doing ANYTHING like this... and i think that i have all the stitches right, thats why im so confused. Thanks

  • @StrangeSundays Is this your fist time crochet ? Or is this your first hat ? If this is your first time crochet I would recoment something ele to make... I can suggest some video's OR if this is your first hat i would recomend another pattern .. let me know and ill message you :)

  • @bobwilson123 This is actually my first crochet... after i sent that message i was messing around with the yarn and my attempt of a hat and found that if I kept doing what i was doing, it would slowly start to fall like a hat, then I improvised decrease stitches to let it fall into itself even more. Now i have a full hat. Thanks for all the help :)

  • @StrangeSundays Next time use a smaller hook and do less increase rounds :)

  • @bobwilson123 I forgot to mention that i learn relatively quickly and visually - so this video was very helpful. Thanks again :)

  • Hi, how do i change color on this beanie?

  • @muzus1 Do a search for chaining colours crochet

  • Claire. I m looking for the written instructions for the baby purse cradle. I've looked on your blogspot and can't find the written out pattern. Thanks for your help

  • @grammi24 Hi there, on my blog and the left hand side there are labels, the one that says ' my free writtten patterns" click on that id it sould be in there somewhere :)

  • So, with your tutorial here, will I be able to make an adult-sized hat, or will it be infant-sized? Because I'm at the 6 in-betweens part, and my hat looks quite small. (Excellent tutorial, by the way!)

  • @ItsStrangeReally Hi, what yarn are you using ?

  • @bobwilson123 I had nice thick yarn, but I've got it all sorted out. :D

  • Thank you so much. I've been knitting for a while and I'm just now learning to crochet, your tutorials are the easiest that I have found! Very easy to follow ;)

  • Do you go through the top loop of your stitches, or the whole stitch ?

  • @cheycheybearx the whole stitch :)

  • Hi, I have a question! So I always get to my stitch marker and something is off. Sometimes I end on an increase behind the stitch marker or way after it, and I don't think I'm miss counting... And when I get to the end, I want to finish it off but it doesn't just end, it looks longer on one side than the other. Does that make sense?

  • @amayzingmind Oh that sucks ! I am unsure what is happening ... you should always end on a increase did yuo triple check your stitches? It will always be a little longer on one side as it is a spiral and not worked in rows. when you get to the end so a sc and then a sip stich

  • do you have written directions for this hat and other crocheted by you? if so where would i go to find them. thank you for your time:)

  • @jessicarhamy I dont have a any written instruction on this video yet . but i am getting all my patterns written out and there will be a video realse to notify everyone.. Make sure you subscribe to my channel so that you dont miss the video :)

  • Thank you! Finally someone who holds the crochet hook the way I learned (European style), not like a pencil. It's so much easier this way!

  • @schatz814 I totally agree.. only coz i cant hold it the other way lolol

  • @bobwilson123

    Same here!

  • Love it!

  • ok thank you so much yes that makes sense now. I started it over and its shaping up alot better=)

  • @MSselina1324 YAY !!!! Now you got it :)

  • just a random question but once you get to the straight sides it really doesn't matter about the yarn maker anymore, right?

  • @whynotrylan I usally leave the maker in just so i know where to end of the hat, I just line up the finishing off to the stitch marker .. but that is just my OCD :)

  • Hi, I've been having a hard time with this after watching it and trying to make my own..I dont know if its because i might be off with my counting but it seems like my beanie just gets wider and wider and is not taking the shape of the beanie. its looking more like a beret. is it possible my counting thats the reason for this? thanks!

  • @MSselina1324 Hi, When the circumference of the hat gets to 1 inch smaller than the head circumference it is for .. you will stop doingincreasign ,, so you will just do 1 stitch in each stitch . Did this help you ?

  • i wanna make a rasta beanie without dredds but i think it would be cool

  • @nciscrazier Hi i am sorry but i do not know how to make one :(

  • Uh, what do you do if the marker falls out and you can't tell where it was? Cuz that just happened to me...

  • @dummyinblue OH NO !!! I am not sure, have you finished your increasing ?

  • @bobwilson123 Yeahp! I just finished the increasing part and was maybe two rows into the straight part

  • I am new to crocheting. A friend of mine gave me some yarn, hooks and a how to book for Christmas. I find the book a little hard to follow but your video on crocheting a beanie using the half double crochet is very easy to follow. I am currently working on my 1st ever crochet project...the beanie. Thanks for sharing your talent!

  • have you ever made a beanie that has a "mohawk" down the center?

  • @azlmt Yes, I am currently working on a tutorial for this. Keep an eye out.

  • Hello and thank u so much for sharing your talent. I am learning so much. Can you please provide the link for the website for the sizes? Thanks in advance.

  • @Timbodice67 Hi, if you do a google search for - bevs country cottage chart sizes- you should find the link :)

  • @bobwilson123 thank u so much. I did find the site and she has great ideas too. Thank u for responding and Happy 2012.

  • Thank you soooo much for all your tutorials!! They are fantastic and simple easy to follow!! I love them! :)

  • Definitely the best tutorial for crocheting a beanie I've seen so far! Thanks so much!

  • @trenthairston15 Thanks for watching :)

  • @trenthairston15 I would have to agree. She is wonderful!!!

  • this looks so simple but im still kinda new and i dont think im still not getting it and idk why i watch it over and over idk what im doing wrong. my baby can be here any time in the next couple of weeks and i really wanted to make her one by me.

  • @OurLifeOnFilm4110 Maybe try another hat pattern this may be a hardish one for a newbie :) The owl beanie or the simple crown video may help you more :)

  • This is the best tutorial for making a hat! Clear instructions and made the whole process super easy for me to do! Thanks so much! I am already on hat #2!

  • Comment removed

  • @shellyshockamonga YOu can make the inital chain longer try 6 or 7 and then join to make a ring :)

  • Can we get a written pattern for this? Is it somewhere else?

  • @crochetnutterbutter Hi there sorry but i havnt got this one written out yet. I am working though my pattern very slowly getting them converted to written format :)

  • Thanks bobwilson123.... you tutorial was the easiest to understand for me thus far!

  • Definitely the clearest video I've found. I was seriously struggling before I found this and now I'm on my way to finally making my dad a beanie! THANK YOU!

  • Love the vid and the explanation is awesome. But mines looks like a pan coaster. I'm using the right gauge hook for the yarn (according to the yarn's instructions on the wrapper). Should I still try a smaller hook? It's also very wavy like someone else's question. Not sure if I'm just working too tight (very new at crochet).

  • u wernt very clear......i didnt do it quite right.....

  • @Crimsontears161716 What part are you stuck on ?

  • what needle size are you using?

  • @333freakflag 4mm hook and a 8ply/DK yarn

  • @bobwilson123 You said you do about 10 increase rows for this hat to fit your head? Can you tell me the measurement of your head in diameter in inches please? I am on row 9 and I want to be sure it fits. Thanks!

  • @jcardozo723 my head is 58cm...make you hat 56-57 cm as it will stretch :)

  • @bobwilson123 Thanks mate. You have great videos. I have one problem though. My increasers are flat instead of cupping/curving. Any idea why?

  • @jcardozo723 Try a Smaller hook :) and this should make it curl up :)

  • @jcardozo723 and thank you so much for helping out the other viewer with her question on this hat :)

  • Hi, I'm having some trouble with my beanie. It's pointy at the top and I'm already at 13-15 rows... I am kind of helpless now... It looks almost like a sun hat than a beanie hat..

I didn't think it would turn out like this...

  • @yayanpowered Hey there, all you have to do is when you start your loop, do 12 half double crochets instead of 6, then do about 10 increase rows. At about the 10th row, you will stop increasing and start just crocheting a half double crochet into each hole. If you find your hat is loopy and deformed, you maybe be inserting your crochet needle into the wrong area of the opening. You should only be slipping it just beneath the top two bits of yarn in the crochet loop. Take your time! <3

  • @yayanpowered Also, when you are doing your increase rows, make sure you are always adding an extra crochet at each round. So first round is all doubles, second round it alternates single, double, single, double. Third round, single-single, double, single-single, double. Fourth, single-single-single, double, etc. Keep track of the last stitch by adding the bit of a different colored yarn just after your last crochet which should always be a double at the end!

  • @jcardozo723 Should I start over again?... my beanie looks too big now... it looks rather funny.... I've been doing everything that she has been doing, but my beanie isn't taking the same shape; mine looks more like summer hat for a child. Gah... I understand what you're saying... I really don't know what I've done wrong. Ha. Thank you so much though for the quick response!

  • @yayanpowered Did you get really far? Well even if you did, if you go further it will just take longer to start over hehe. I started over with mine since the last video i watched was from a different woman who went too fast. This lady is MUCH better. It's up to you, but I did and it was worth it. I guess the yarn and needle size really matters. Mine isn't looking exactly like hers either, but it's MUCH better than the last lady's taught me to do, and it's not all wavy.

  • Comment removed

  • @jcardozo723 Gah... the width is more than 12'' (30 cm)... which is kind of dumb. I'm trying to make this for my boyfriend and I know his head isn't that huge .__. the problem I'm having is getting the right height... which means I'm definitely doing something wrong... what is definitely growing is the width and I need the height! I don't mind starting over as long as I work my butt off the rest of the night but still... I don't know where i went wrong.

  • @jcardozo723 And yes, mine is definitely wavy at the ends! I thought I might fix it by making a bit tighter and it was less wavy but the width is really a bother.

  • Aw, great video. I will unravel the one I made using another lady's video and make this one instead mate! (love the accent!) :D

  • If I want to make this beanie in double crochets, would I only add 5 double crochets to the ring and use the chain as the 6th? Or would I still add 6 double crochets to the ring and skip the chain?

  • @leannedanae Still use the 6 :) or 12

  • Working along with your video. Easily understandable!! Thank you!!

  • What type of yarn should be used for this hat? I made one just like you had in your video, but I think I used worsted yarn, and the hat isn't tight at all. Came out way too loose, but at least now I know how to do it.

  • @maryluvscakes1 Use a smaller hook that will help with the loosness :)

  • my brother has requested a skull cap for xmas, he wants it very thin so it will fit under is hard hat at work. I bought some super fine yarn ( wool sock yarn ) and I have been trying to figure out how to make it grow properly. it is tiny yarn adn the standard pattern just doesnt allow it to grow. I mean by row 8 with the super fine yarn it is the size of row 3 or 4 with the yarn i have used before. with teh super fine yarn i am using US size G. Can you help me please? thank you

  • @stephaniet7696 Hi, I would sugest the double crochet beanie that i use in the owl beanie video ans this has larger stitches and it should grow quicker and be better for the yarn you are using .. let me know how you go

  • @bobwilson123 thank you! it worked perfectly!

  • @stephaniet7696 YAY !!!!

  • at the end we dont have decrease on it?

    Thanks.

  • @dsalinas737nfl are you talking about the last row? If you are then no you dont do any decreased at all in this video

  • SLOW DOWN

  • @itnowin OK

  • I think I've figured it out (20 tries later)my yarn isn't the same as the one you used so my hook needed to be bigger. It didn't matter how loose I crocheted, it still came out tight. It's late now, I think I'll start it again tomorrow. Happy crochet!

  • I meant to ask: does the beanie for the aviatior hat have to be the beanie from this tutorial?

  • @Philippiansthree1314 No you can use any beanie that you like or know how to make :)

  • Does the beanie have to be the one from this tutorial?

  • how will i do it if i dont want it pointy from the top?

  • @dsalinas737nfl YOu can use 12 stitches instead of the 6 and then folllow the rest of the video

  • why my hat is so wide? i did everything you said step by step but at the end it looks like

a traiangle its not tight it goes wider and wider

  • @estermom Hi, DId you stop increasing (putting 2 stitches into the same stich) when you hat the head measurement you needed? If you did then maybe the hook you used was oo big, this will cause it to be baggy

  • I'm still confused, how many increase rows do I need to make the beanie a size for man?

  • @poetspice Depending on your thickness of yarn will depend on the amount of increase rows.. There is a great website with head measurements called bevs counrty cottage. Use the head measurements on thast page to use for the size of beanie. Keep increasing until the website measurement matches the circumference of your increased beanie Keep in mind that you need to make the beanie slightly smaller as it will stretch so make about 1/2 inch smaller than the web site measurement :) Hope this helps

  • @poetspice Sorry i forgot to say that when you get to the size you need then you stop increasing and then do 1 stitch in each :)

  • first off, thank you for this clear & simple tutorial! it was very helpful. only question I have is do I keep continuing the pattern (increase by one each row) or at some point do I stop? I'm on my 11th row and it is the diameter I want it to be... help?!

  • @hletourneau9 WHen you get to the diameter of what you need do one stitch in each stich :) no more inreasing

  • If we wanted to put different colors of yarn, when could we put it in, at the beginning at whatever round of our choosing?

  • @xroomforimprovment When working in a spiral you can change colour anytime. It will not be a solid row as it is a spiral... Hope this helps you

  • Am I doing it wrong if the hat is almost six inches in diameter and there is no turning or curving and it is totally flat?

  • @volkswagenminibus Try a smaller hook and this will tighten up the stitch and should make it curl up better. Can you email me a photo ?

  • @bobwilson123 I'm not very technologically savvy, but that tip should help. Thank you very much!

  • @bobwilson123 I ended up turning it into a beret type thing... Thanks!

  • so basically the increase is always 2?

  • @roxcibear101 A increase is always 2 stitches on the same stitch

  • still going but im getting there

  • This is great, thank you! All the other videos I've seen just assume that people already know how to crochet and they fast-forward through the actual stitches.

  • @bobwilson123 ok I got it now. BTW I made a beanie! I will upload it to facebook!

  • @bobwilson123 So when you do 1,2,3 then increase, for the next "stitch" do you go into the increase stitch?

  • @ChrisJCTV From the previous row ? I Yes ..is that what you ment ?

  • i cant fucking do this AT ALL!!!! im soooo fucking pissed i want to cry!!!

  • @xxkermitxjibbleyxx I can see that from the language used. How long have you been crocheting for ?

  • @bobwilson123 well i just started about 2 months agao, i made a dish cloth and it looks like crap!

  • Thank you, I will have to check that video for the ear flaps. I guess adding them as I go would be easier :)

  • Thanks for your videos! They are easy to understand for a beginner like me. I'm hooked on crocheting now =o)

  • @Ingrid1006 Welcome to the world of crochet and yes it is very addictive

  • If you do twelve on the first round instead of six would u skip round to or just hdc in each stitch?

  • @Mchllstone1 Weather you do 12 or 6 stitches at the beginning you still do row 2 :)

  • i love your videos so much! (: thank you!

  • This tutorial was to easy to follow! I didn't realize how simple beanies actually were. Also, I was wondering if you could tell me what is the best way to add ear flaps? Or should they be crocheted in while making the beanie?

  • @jackiexboy I would add them as you go , the owl beaie video has earflaps and you could add the ear flaps to any beanie

  • Aweome vid! This was a lot more helpful than any of ther others I've watched! I was just wondering if you could show how to add a stripe or a design into a hat done like this???

  • @lovrgrl2413 With the hats in the spiral it is had to add stripes because there are no ends to the rows :(

  • u should put half dbl crochet in your title for less confusion.

  • I looove all of your videos! Its really hard to get a decent video with good instruction. Thank you so very much for you help :)

  • Great videos...good teaching

  • my beanie turned out just like a flat circle what did i do wrong?

  • @lilwayneeluvr OH NO !!! Use a smaller hook and this will make it curl up :)

  • @bobwilson123 ok (: will a 4.25 size hook work?

  • @lilwayneeluvr depends on what yarn you are using ?
