  • Painful

  • my favorite things?

  • @gonzalofvazquez you got it

  • sounds like hes jus playing random notes not music

    lol

  • @elias2ma One man's random notes is another's symphony. It's big wide world of music out there, something for everyone.

  • @elias2ma

    lol,

It's impossible to describe jazz. If you don't like it, you lose.

  • @elias2ma xDDDD you need your ears opened

  • that grooooooooove!

  • Happy Birthday Dave!

  • ジョーイ・カルデラッツィオのモードフルピアノだ!~デイヴ・リーブマンとやってたのか~デイヴのコルトレーン哀歌だな~ソプラノの大家 #jazzm

  • shitty audience huh? i break the ass in two playing epic solos and only a couple applauses....

  • @metalmaniac5 applauses are only for metal players that feel insecure about themselves because they actually know no music

  • @DajaWaja That's preposterous. It is mainly jazz that has the tradition of applause after each players solo, rather than only at the end of the piece.

  • @limaktba what do you mean

  • the only thing i can say why the bubble gum crap ads? Oh, it's actually these type players here that can play and make them people sound good. Yes, Jazz players and studio musicians, engineers. How can you dislike? This man has the cred.

I still say artistry and originality trumps the best of technical players. Miles, Jaco, Bird etc...

  • Dave Liebman,Joey Calderazzo, Dave Holland, Jack de Johnette...what a treat!

...and the hottest performance of "My Favorite Things" ever

  • "White people just don't get it ", Miles Davis"

  • The Trane sometimes went very fast but did stop at a lotta stations to pick up passengers from coast2coast!

  • is that joey calderazzo on the piano ?

  • @richoboss22: Yes, it is.

  • @richoboss22 yup.

  • Listened to him live once even better live outstanding ......

  • YES

  • bet they can't play Wonderwall

  • Why in God's name are they sposoring this video with some bubble gum pop song. I could be wrong when I say this, but I really don't think the same people who are into this type of jazz would be into bubble gum pop.

    Maybe i'm wrong though!

  • @1979saxman: You would think that with the sophisticated ad targeting that computers are able to do these days that they would make better choices.

  • That's jazz kids! Now go and play!!

  • Oh yeah you gotta keep eating that cereal otherwise you're not going to make it sound like that sweet...

  • GRANDI!!!!!

  • Piano player is jamming out. lol

    love this.

  • Saxophone legend. Jazz Mater !!!

  • Love it! Keeping powerful music alive!

  • bravo dave !

  • NICE.... does anyone know if they put that version out on an album?

  • music perfection!

  • Fantastic ! I just close my eyes and there is Julie Andrews, gliding down a hill in Switzerland in glorious technicolour, humming along in effortless counterpoint to Lieb's lines - which she doesn't do in 7/4, trust me :-)

  • So intense!

  • Joey Calderazzo (piano) is just as enjoyable to watch as to listen to. I love following his lines and how he builds his solo. Holland, on bass, is right there with him perfectly. The entire quartet is spot on here. This is some serious musicianship.

  • Jesus Cristo!!! Isso é fantastico!!

  • Lieb is a great soprano player, that instrument is his true jazz voice.

  • If you want to make a suggestion about the man, good to have seen him live first, especially with Mile Nock on piano, and maybe Ed Soph on drums as well. If you don't like it, change channels.

  • Yeah, this is amazing. It may be hard to feel the swing when he is playing the super-fast, rhythmically and harmonically advanced stuff. He also plays a bit off pitch, which is in my opinion a Trane thing. Believe me, if he wanted to nail the pitches he could. I saw Dave live at the Green Mill and he killed on a little recorder, playing very melodically and with pure pitch and completely in tune. Time for me to see if I can play some of these licks on my tenor.

  • anybody tthat doesn't think that dave liebman rocks on this - just doesn't get it

  • Fine musician but a little corney for my taste- tries too hard-- not muical-- no soul bro

  • @rockin3b Maybe if you close your eyes and imagine he's black you'll hear the soul.

  • I think this player need some sex:)

  • Modern Jazz can be a pain in the ass

  • @Snoohi1 hey, that's what I say, LOL

  • @Snoohi1 So can ignorant coments be...

  • If anyone can find a more interesting, artful, intense, emotional music than jazz, drop me a line. I love this!!!!!!!

  • Well said brother... I love this!

    NICE POST!!!!

It has a nice Coltranesque feel to it without being a too Slavish an interpretation..

  • @bassdrumbone64 Not possible,sorry;-)

  • prefiro elvin jones na batera

  • Trane lives my ass!

  • Willowlax, if you think this music lacks emotion you need to get yourself a new emotion detector.

  • Thanks for the tip! I've got myself a new emotion detector and it definitily makes a difference ;) I do have cd's of Calderazzo, DeJohnette and Holland. I just don't like the sound of Liebman, that's all!

  • @willowlax i just cant stand to watch him play, he just looks like he's going to shit his pants

  • you could make that argue for every john coltrane song. Especially one that incorporate a lot of scales and arpeggios.

  • you should check out the album "Favorite things"

These musicians are both technically and emotionally connected to their music. You should continue to listen to your smooth jazz buddy.

  • A masterly performance all round for me!

  • He definitely follows Trane

  • The bassist plays great through the cord changes.

  • that's because he's dave holland

  • lol @ JacobSchulmans comment, but yes, it´s nothing strange about Dave being able to play solid walk.

  • I think Jack DeJohnette is great. Check out recordings under his own name.

  • Joey is sick!

  • Joey is Great!!!

  • @takefive07 cannot believe this guy...there's lots of great stuff of him up here in various lineups...always intense...

  • Intense is the word for Liebman--and they Sop is difficult to play in tune!

  • Piano-Joe is amazing. Makes me scream like Keith Jarret!!

  • The rythmic section is fantastic. Liebman doesn't touch me: too close to Coltrane's language.

  • So true!

  • Comment removed

  • liebman un grande

  • Urgh.

    Joey Calderazzo is filthy.

  • The pianist is sick!

  • i would attribute his focused sound to the black lacquered soprano.

  • I would attribute his focused sound to his massive amounts of practicing.

  • this is a cool version. i saw a group do this song in 7 once, now THAT swung

  • le faltan deos a ese maestro jajajaja

  • My favorite things in 4 just sounds so lame, in my opinion. The band plays it great though.

  • It does not sound lame ..why? Cause it's just a great melody, song, and modal vibe. It's working...

    it's really working!!!

  • WOW so Great!

  • Yes, he changed his soud....hmmm

  • Am I the only one to notice this is played in 4?

  • No.

  • If only wasn't so tense. It's very tiring to listen to. He sound is thin,

  • Thats the beauty of Liebs

And he has changed his sound alot in the last ten years, I just saw him live three weeks, sat in the front row- let me tell you, his sound is something, and its not thin man

  • It's quite intellectual, yeah, but I wouldnt describe it as thin

  • Joey C. has really come into his own. Every note hits you in the chest...and there are a lot of notes here!

  • As long as their are people who remember his name, trane lives!

  • AHH HOLLAND! Damn..

  • Wow! This is wonderful!

    Me like!

    5 of 5!

  • thank you for posting that video

    love

  • Gosh !! I agree, that is so ugly !! Rubbish

  • dave's style is amazing, he has a new form of jazz almost

  • oh my god! I have to see this guy live!!!

  • You said Kenny G. LOL:P

  • hey man, you know where can i buy this dvd?" a tenor supreme" dvd

  • They are amazing, that's so fucking good !! crazy jazz session !!! thx for sharing this genius video

  • coltrane would have played it tastefully and used more interesting phrasing

  • yeah but unfortunately he's gone. There will never be another Coltrane among us. Ever.

  • ....

    how dare you...

  • Total optur - Joey´s the man..!!!!

  • I mean I'm a fan of Charlie Parker und Miles Davis and all these guys because at least they are harmonic and sound great

  • I bet no one would notice if he just played complete crap

  • Two of "My Favorite Things" are listening to Dave Liebman or John Coltrane.

  • 9:50 - 10:45 = INSANITY

  • Joe you are the great pianiste !

  • can someone show me how to play soprano sax

  • This keyboardist in the zone!

  • *_* i love it

  • playing this good has nothing to do with practicing... it has to do with cereal. If you eat your wheaties, you may one day play like them. coltrane was on the box back in 66' which symbolizes the pinnacle of his career.

  • @MeowMeowProphecy actually it's a well known fact that Mr. Leibman become the world class musician he is by eating spam......lots and lots of spam.

  • @1979saxman Is spam kosher?!

  • this is bad ass!!

  • go Joey GO!!!!

    work that piano, animal! lolz

  • God I love Liebman's playing.

  • on revient cinquante ans en arriere est ce une bonne copie??

  • the take on the theme was pretty lame.. otherwise I dig

  • Consider this: it took two guys to cover the Coltrane legacy. Dave mastered the soprano end and Mike Brecker covered the tenor end. Coltrane could give you either one with equal command during the same evening...maybe even in the same set or tune!

  • Leibman can play a bit of tenor too...

  • Love what Holland is doing with the changes.

  • Awesome combination of the hippest and baddest cats around. Hope we get to see more of this dream combo. One of the strongest lineups I've seen in a long time. Thanx!!!

  • yeah man....listen to this while stoned......you'll see some amazing colors during calderazzo's solo.....heavy shit man...the interplay at 5:20's is awesome!!!

  • A great tribute to Coltrane!

  • This music is so inspiring!

i could listen to it all day and all night and never get bored.

  • Got to see Dave along with George Mraz

Richie Beireich and Adam Nussbaum in

Memphis 25 years ago. The intensity in

his playing and in his bandmates still

BURNS as evidenced here. Hypnotic and

    relentless. Kudos to everyone here.

  • this was not an attempt to sound like trains quartet..just a simple nod to our hero..we all love train mccoy elvin and jimmy..

  • I rarely comment, this time I want to.This Band is a "Tour De Force" it does not get any better than what you just heard or are about to hear.

I just wish I was there at the actual performance.I am certain that John Coltrane and his band smile every time a new person listens to this band...I know I do.

Thank you Thank You Thank You.

  • Yeah man, THat is my fav group of all time, the classic quartet

You are fuckin killin on here man

  • there are so many people on the internet trying to use liebmans sax lessons as a way to make a profit without any real knowledge or credit to the man. it's disgusting some of the things i've seen. overtones being played wrong and trying to say there right. I think liebman would have a fit. i have one of his dvd's on saxophone and the stuff he does is right on and he can play what he refers to. I dig this version of favorite things.

  • The musical legacy of jazz is passed from one musician to the next in the aural tradition. There are no books, no quick gratification of doing what Sidney Bechet, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and Dave Liebmen have dont. Each has taken from the past, built upon and synthisized his own creative universe. They have poured their souls, bodies and minds into the creative flow you hear in this music....you have to truely listen...to hear...

  • Gee, I am happy to find a side featuring Dave Liebman. I don't get the feeling that he has to try , he is just doing . As for this being an attempt at a copy of Trane , "Favorite Things" , this is done in four here and not three and the men offer as different a point of view as four other people would on a theme . Our television generation of "MTV" smug remarks or rating art like it is "Star Search" is really showing how the point of the music and the value of the musicians is being lost here.

  • Trane is dead and worried about more important things now. Get out of the 1960s, let it be, and enjoy the great music by some phenomenal players.

  • no one will ever play like coltrane [in 2 lifetimes] but i respect Liebman's and crew vision/technical prowess to attempt the reckless sonic fury the way coltrane played...

these guys are real jazz musicians in form and function

  • luv the piano playing

  • Yeah, one of my favorites. ;-)

  • Everyone's a critic! The guy who said this is Masturbation should stick to Barry Manilow. This is awesome! Is that Calderazo on the boards. The guy is amazing. I don't they are trying to sound like coltrane. They are sounding like coltrane and paying homage it him and taking it out even further. If that's possible.

  • Good, little modern...

  • You are right. Ive seen Liebman with Sunship on drums, Frank Tusa on bass, Richie Beirach on Piano and Badal Roy on tablas I dont know exactly when (end 70s?), and it blew my mind, too. Heavy stuff. One of the best perfomances Ive seen in my life. It was in a cave (yess!) in Balve, Sauerland, Germany, and I wont forget it all my life!

  • Why would David Liebman have to fake a solo? Inane comment!

  • not bad, I guess, but sounds like they were trying too hard to sound like later coltrane, what with the avant-gard sounding sax and whatnot...really great pianist, though, sounds JUST like mccoy tyner. I expected a bit more from the drummer, after all he's done before. But I could actually hear the bass, something I could seldom say about coltrane's music...bass was never loud enough...

  • Masturbation.

  • I think that this is amazing, just not a fan of a lot of the dissonance at the very begging.

  • Jizzaz sanctimonious christ! Everyone at his best! Listen to each one of them. And listen to the group! How they build, comp and sew! Thanks, JVG! As always, a great vid!

  • Great !!!

  • Its too fast. Coltrane's soul was that.. Soul.

  • Superbe !!!

  • all monstersss

  • Jazz... with teeth. Awesome, in the true sense of the word.

  • what a line up - one of the best.

  • if you think liebman is ripping off coltrane.. what about joey and mccoy? those guys were influences which when you approach modal music, you cant shy from. and snake charmer?! thats how soprano's sound man.

  • How can anyone have anything negative to say about this brilliant performance? The only thing I can assume is that catandpiddle has no real appreciation for this kind of jazz. He should know that the tonality is likely affected by the fact that this is a poor quality youtube uploaded video.

Liebmann is probably in the top 25 of all time.

  • I would argue against not that.

  • Wow, I tune in just to listen to Jack DeJohnette and I can't seem to get away from you immature people who just want to argue about who's better! Someone should disable comments on all jazz videos...you're like a bunch of 2nd graders on here. Does anyone even realize there are some of the best musicians in the world playing in the video above? You should check it out...

  • I would take the Pepsi challenge, I could bullseye any "off" note, deviating from Coltrane, anytime.

But that would be mainly about recognizing Coltrane's style. If I hurt Liebman's feelings I'd feel bad, it's like saying "you'll never be Sheakespeare, exactly, douchenozzle, ha ha!" who cares? but this performance is obviously great. The guy's obviously one of the best saxophonists in the world, I'm just obsessed with Coltrane.

  • Honestly, though, Dave is playing straight out of Coltrane's book here, so much so in fact criticizing him for being a mindless wanker is practically accusing Coltrane of the same thing.
