Shouldn't you semi tighten them then lower the jack so the tire is on the ground before fully tightening them? I think that would be safer than swinging of the handle to tighten the nuts while it is still jacked up.

"Place car in first gear or park" WTF? FIRST GEAR??? If you are seriously using this video to learn how to change your tire you might as well die trying.
Not your fault, its due to America's inability to drive stick shift.
Usually you would park a stickshift in N and apply the parking/emergency brake. In N your drive wheels are free to move, in 1st gear the transmission locks the drivewheels in place.
Its harder to change a flat with free moving wheels, FYI.
why would you think that changing the tire on dirt was a good idea....just because the ground feals strong to you, you should NEVER put a vehicle on a jack on dirt...if the dirt gives than the jack goes an so will you special Sport Utility Van
Heck, it's even risky jacking up a car on soft asphalt surfaces. Like driveways and parking lots. Like you said even if it's feels solid under your feet, give it a few minutes and you find out too late that it's not!
