Hello, are your dogs good with other animals and people? I am very interested in owning an akita but i've read many things. I am just interested in an owners opinion on their own personal dogs. Thanks!
Hello! They are not dogs for inexperienced owners as they are stubborn, highly intelligent and need a LOT of proper training and socialization. My male loves every human being and gets along with most submissive dogs (he fights with dominant dogs), while my female loves dogs but is wary of humans she doesn't know. So each dog is different, you need to buy from a reputable breeder for good temperament or better yet, adopt from akita rescue - good luck!
@ghj997 your best bet would be to contact your local rescues, there are many in the states that specialize in akitas - otherwise for a good dog from a reputable breeder there is nothing low cost... maybe join the akita forum and ask?
@Shelbss103 hey i use to own one, it was pretty much the only thing i have ever loved. they are excellent pets, but u dont even see them as that, u see them as your friend! mine died when 14 years old and was one of the saddest things i had to go through. i will say they are very protective of their owners but when they can see someone is being friendly to you they are friendly to them aswell. they are a lot of work, as in eats lots and when younger need daily walks. but buy from a good breeder!

Watching them play really lets you know how powerful they can be. Of course between eachother it's all fun and games. But just post this video up somewhere on your front steps to show intruders what they're dealing with :)

If that's a measure of intelligence, they would be off the chart! Mine are big pussy cats, but when they play they sound like they are gonna kill one another!
Remember they are not all cute and fluffy either, these things bites break bones, and it's not uncommon to see a random akita snap, that seemed good tempered..

I have a Akita,Boxer mix he looks pure Akita except he only weights 75 lbs and stands 21 inch's.Orangish tans solid color no markings of any kind he's a lover not a fighter he gets beat up by my mothers yorkie/hot dog.The yorkie jumps up and bites Snaddie's neck and he just shakes his head and the little one flies away then comes back for more it's too funny.Akita will be the only breed of dog I will ever own once my dog passes away he's 12 now and the vet says he has the health of a 5yr dog !!
could some of you tell me wath's the different between an akita inu and american akita, I know, the america akita is a cross between akita inu and German Shepherd Dog and I guess there's a big diferent about the behavior of them.

I have an Akita. If the backdoor is open she lays at the doorway till I close the door. cool stuff. I once heard that if an intruder breaks in they wont make a noise until the intruder is cornered. Idk My girl barks if someone walks up, then again ive come in the back door and surprised her and she didnt make a noise while rushing to see who was there.
I had 2. One of them died last year, so only the female is still around:(. When they were both with me, I noticed they would actually guard the house's 3 entrances by sitting at he two farthest, and keeping a common eye on the middle one. Every so often they would switch entrances. Amazing dogs. Incredibly smart by nature.
Yes, american akitas... the white male is from CH lines, and weighs 140 lbs now at 3.5 years - I need to post a more recent video of Mr. Muscle! The fawn girl is unfortunately the product of a "backyard breeder" but she's an awesome girl, up to 95 lbs now at 1.5 years of age. We do zootherapy with them sometimes with alzheimer's patients.
No doubt most beautiful breed in the world and yours are no exception!! I have owned 4 and they are just the greatest!

Akitas are not for everyone. But if you socialize them and love them they are the best dog there is. On the other hand they are like a loaded gun.

Anyway, the purebred, Japanese Akita Inu is not as aggressive as the American version. Americans love to pump up their toys you know, so....
In any case, Akitas are beautiful dogs. Very loyal, at the center of the family. Extremely loyal. Look up Hachiko.
