I think that this was by far the best conversation with history that I have ever seen! Robert Fisk is truly an amazing man and has put me on the verge of tears! If only every person were so adamantly pacifist and understood the pain of war as he does!

Capitalism is the wage slavery of immense humanity in a politically manipulated MARKET SYSTEM OF ARTIFICIAL SCARCITY ,a tyrannical, destructive system to perpetuate poverty and exploitation in the interest of the ruling class. Capitalism from its Genocidal killings of native Americans to the mercantile plundering and enslavement of African natives to its Millitaristic rise of European Powers to World wars and Financial serfdom of the world has been a DISASTEROUS imposition .
In the book, Age of the Warrior, Fisk writes this factual inaccuracy. Shakespeare lived at a time when the largely Muslim Ottoman Empire then at the zenith of its power, remained an existential if not a real threat for Europeans.
This is nonsense. In 1565, one year after the birth of Shakespeare (1564), the Turkish Ottomans besieged Malta and were defeated by the Knights Hospitallers of St John.
When Queen Elizabeth I heard of this she ordered all the church bells in Britain rung.
Fisk is an old school English Leftie. He combines a fogeyish Empire quality with a general sympathy for the underdog. His attitude is essentially cynical but also colored by the occasional romantic outpouring; lost faith, literature, the common man etc. He is heroic - but self-deprecating and ashamed by posture. A wonderful relic of a vanishing type.
@johnsammyanfal Your writing style is like mine. Interesting. You should write somewhere. I have decided to write a book dealing with American society, describing many of the same aspects that Robert Fisk elaborates on. I feel that it is the only option to tell the truth, but it will be very interesting to see how well this plays out (goes over) in our "new society". Since writers like Fisk will be gone soon and Hunter Thompson has already taken the ride. I urge you to continue as well...
the sabra and shatila massacre was by lebanese chrisitian catholic militia who killed moslem palestinians as continuation of the lebanese civil war, to eliminate plo terrorists who made life a misery for other lebanese. the commander of these catholics later became a member of parliament and cabinet minister in the lebanese parliament. israel was considered guilty of not preventing it, but as israel prime minister menachem begin said, "christians kill muslims and the jews are to blame?".
@2GfH345N The Israelis controlled the area. They did not have to let the people in. They could have acted in a way that they would have wanted the world during the Holocaust: they could have stopped murder. They didn't. They watched, as the world watched the Holocaust. They did nothing, as the world did nothing!
@Ermal8711 you talk naive self-righteous nonsense. this was lebanese civil war with long-time phalangist christian battles against muslim terrorist gang occupiers within their country. this was not "civil" war any more than what you see in syria/libya/iraq/afghanistan where un plus western governments can't stop the bloodshed. phalangists wanted revenge due assassination of lebanese christian president bashir gemayel two days earlier. you pass judgement on situations you can't comprehend.
@2GfH345N I will pass plenty of judgement. Nothing here follows from what I said above. You just replied in a collection of non sequitur regarding the nature of the war (commonly and universally called a Civil War). The fact is that Christian Lebanese went into the camp and murdered the civilians there while the Israelis watched. This is commonly accepted by everyone.
He kept saying that we've lost our faith. It almost sounds like he thinks that's a bad thing...I don't regret not having any faith or religion. The last thing humanity needs is to be assured that there's anything beyond this life. That's a large part of why we have suicide bombers at all
Thank you for the courage to reveal the history and the truth of war. Many are fooled by the heroics and the so called 'glory' of the military life style. The truth is that the young lads recruited really believe that the military is somthing to be proud of having been wooed by the image of heroism, the joy of being employed (with possibly no other opportunities,) receiving paid education and cheap home loans ( or for some - to avoid reform school). They have no idea what it is really about.
For all of his intelligence, moral courage and zeal, it seems Fisk is a bit of a luddite, and almost appears to take pride in being so. It seems odd that such a profound mind would reject the obvious advantages that technology such as the internet could bestow on his cause.
on the one hand, this gentleman is a brilliant advocate for the need to depict war realistically in the media, and, after 30 years on the front lines of Middle Eastern warzones it's impossible to question his commitment to doing so. On the other hand, if he's serious about the need to open the eyes of the public about the realities of war, with the goal of making it harder for western leaders to gain public support for their wars, then why not get a digital camera and an internet connection?
@Rossyboy3000 Excellent point. I always despair of people of the older generation who refuse to modernise. They miss out on a brighter new world of instant knowledge and communication and yes, in Fisk's case, the empowerment to be able to inform people of the truth.
You didnt have to be at the UN to realise Colin was talking bullshit. And i disagree with Fisk. You will never convince religious, gun-toting right wingers to avoid war because its terrible and the suffering and lots of little children die; they dont and will never care. A largely missing element in the discourse between 2001 and 2003 was an explanation of why war in Iraq was bad for US interests; how it energized islamists etc. Im with George Washington: its all about personal intersts.

Fisk, you're a twit & no where near qualified to talk about an alledged Armenian "genocide", before, during or after WWI! You have no clue as to the reality of those times! How much have the Armenian diaspora paid you? You owe a huge apology to the memories and spirits of those that were slaughtered by the Armenians!! Perhaps a group of experts should fully examine/review ALL of your sources to see if they are all above board! You'd never be able to survive a full on debate with REAL historians!
Hey Fisk, did you lose any family members to the dashnak Armenians? I did (my paternal grandfather was one of the few survivors of the massacres in Van by the dashnaks)! Do you know what the British Blue Book of 1915-1916 was? How long have you been a Turkophobe? You mentioned Churchill's picture in your interview. Because Churchill was disgraced at Gallipolli, he never forgave the Turks & Ataturk for beating him! You Brits have done all sorts of evils all throughout history!
@zephonlucifer You obviously speak from personal experience! Sorry to hear that you're an idiot, compounded by having ADD as well. Hang in there. You can still lead a decent life, from what you can understand of it.
@SuliemanTheGreat I read both Pity The Nation and Civilization. Not only did he cover the plight but throughout his career he has gone out of his way to everyone who will listen to call what happened a Genocide, when even back then the UN refused to acknowledge it as one. You're absolutely idiotic in your thinking and DO have ADD since you didnt even last 15 min into the recording. In here he even said that once his father died THE CHURCHILL picture went down.
@zephonlucifer Actually, I did hear that part about the Churchill painting/picture. SO, what of it?!! As for Fisk's books, did you bother to check his references? How many Armenian &/or Greek sources did you find? Much like Wetzel's "Mussa Dagh", where he relied almost entirely on the words of an Armenian Bishop w/o checking other sources, & then finding out later that he had been "dupped" by the Bishop, he expressed his sorrow to Amanteau (see his sworn testimony). Morgenthau did the same.
@SuliemanTheGreat Can you pick out just ONE euro reporter who has even BOTHERED to cover the Genocide- who even bothers mentioning it now let alone back then?UN REFUSED to acknowledge it, Fisk was the only reporter to use the word GENOCIDE and was bashed for it. You attack him because of his SOURCES, when you know bloody well back then ppl were not only denying it happened but went out of their way to make sure little covered it Fisk got what he could with what was attainable at least he TRIED.
@zephonlucifer Would you say the same if the roles were reversed? Look, I don't want to argue with you or anyone else for that matter at this time. I just received word that a good friend of mine from high school was killed. So, you'll forgive me if I'm not as "animated" as is my usual self. I may be off the sites for a while. You know, we may argue or debate topics, sometimes heated, but you really see things in their proper perspective when compared to the fragility of life! ENJOY LIFE! Peace.
@SuliemanTheGreat You can only do so much when you're one man and back then there was no internet or such a thing as 'reliable' sources - you got what you could and report it. Countries would masacure people and no one would be the wiser no one would ever know. NOW if you ask him to write a new book soley on the Genocide I PROMISE you, he would do it justice because NOW in our generation NOTHING can be covered up and people who lived through it will talk.
@SuliemanTheGreat Also when I say that it I'm saying not just what happened in 1915. But everything in general - just how much do we actually know and who is bothering to cover it. Worry about that before you worry about sources.
I agree dendite. In Fisk's world (like most men), it's understood and accepted that women are merely slaves and that men are the *real* subject.
nebel64 must be smoking something strong to believe that white men are somehow put-upon. They own/rule ALL of the world. Do they expect the majority to love them for it?
I agree w/much of what he had to say, but he acts like he's manic/stoned. He keeps going on and on about the West "losing its faith" as if believing in an old man in the sky is an enviable thing. Then he sounds like a blowhard when he goes on about "them" having more than one wife.
Of course, the last frontier is misogyny. "we" "our" etc. only refers to men. It's always ok to talk about women like chattel.
To radical feminists, "we" and "our" does only refer to men, because of the skewed hatred of men that has clouded their ability to look at history impartially. Indeed, radical progressives are all too willing to align with the most intolerant and brutal ideology in the world today, because Fascism in the Middle East shares a contempt for individual difference, freedom, and the other major religions of the world. Also, men of European ancestry/Jews are hated without parallel by both.
@kelticuss1 No. Fisk is not comparable to Fox news at all, he references and bears witness to everything he reports, he doesn't just flail an agenda around bolstering it with hyperbole and catchphrases. Credibility.
He calls the book 'the conquest of the middle east', but the middle east has been conquered by the turks, persians, arabs, more than once. The title has a tone of 'superiority' as if this is the first time the middle east has been invaded which gives a sense of glamour and superiority in the wars of the middle east. People forget the ww1 and consequently the wars in the middle east was caused by the collapse of the ottoman empire which resulted in a land grab for the areas without a master
If you actualy read the book you would realise that he talks about his experiences covering the middle east which he has been doing for over 30 years. He doesn't talk about the ancient history of the middle east rather the post ww2 era which he is most familiar with and which mainly involves the west. So based on what the book is about the title is totaly relevent.
@ali12147 Yep. Watch some of his other videos. He believes the whole "clash of civilizations" argument is bullshit and he is also highly critical of all actors. The way it should be.
One of the few journalists alive today who tells things as they are and doesn't care who he upsets in the process. We fail to recognise the importance of such people in the current climate.
why's the interviewer going off his note cards? doesn't he have question's of his own to ask? Disagree with me if you will, but I thought journalism was based on the individual. Robert Fisk has been dissin' this guy the whole time about it.
He's a self-absorbed, self-congratulatory smart ass who thinks he knows, just knows, the truth. Jumping on Harry Kreisler to lecture him on academic snobbery was straightforward bad manners.
And The independent long ago went to the dogs. Bring back Bill Bryson!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Without a doubt the worst reporter in the Middle East. You would think that having lived in that area for more than 30 years he would be able to speak Arabic. He'll die a very lonely and drunk death.
@Bluegirl4me Piss of you fraud. Fisk was one of the few journalists you could rely on to go into great detail of the true cost of war and name the bad guys involved. He gave the arab people a voice. They were the ones suffering the most from these wars and the majority of the western world either didnt know it or didnt care. They believed they were all crazy terrorists due to propaganda and news distortion by heavily biased newspapers and media representing vested interests.
Being a good teller of stories doesn't make the stories factual. Journalism should be a search for truth and to present that to the public, not the presentation of a narrative.
Freedom is failing in large measure to a lack of journalistic integrity. It has always been there, but it is worse than ever today.
@Brantoc Tell me something i dont know, i agree with you.
I hope your not implying that Fisk was telling porkie pies in his reporting. Fisk gave plenty of evidence to clearly show the bad guys in his reporting and work. The fact that he was a brilliant writer or story teller is just all the better for getting his message across. I trust him completely, he has nothing to gain taking on the establishment
Not saying he isn't telling the truth, I am saying that when you come at it from a perspective and are strong in that perspective, it is easy to tell a story from the perspective you are comfortable from.
There is telling the truth from a perspective, and then there is telling the truth.
"Americans bombed a home today killing 3 people."
or
"American forces came under small arms fire from a structure, and returned fire killing 3 terrorists"
If a news report said "Americans bombed a today killing three people" then whoever wrote it wouldn't be giving a perspective, they would be giving little or no detail about what happened. I don't think Fisk leaves such holes in his stories, quite the opposite.
Good news is Chamberlain would have prevented WWII in Europe, but the world would be speaking German.
If you are waiting for a leader without flaws, you will be waiting a very long time. What matters is when the chips are down, if they make the right decision not for political reasons but for the good of the nation. Churchill did, Chamberlain didn't.
I respect what Mr Fisk has done, but as an infantryman and veteran, he's wrong on a lot of levels. Not just about this current conflict, but about war in general. We see it all the time, we talk to journalists and think, well that went well, they aren't all bad. And then a month later we see what was broadcast and think, wait - that's not how it went down at all; that's not what I said.
@vahka44 Yes, the only thing worse than genocide is genocide denied. More needs to be done to raise awareness of this terrible episode in Turkish history.
Yeh i agree, there are some good lectures on youtube by mr hedges though. Its amazing how men like Fisk and Hedges who have seen and experienced the terror of war are so opposed to it and the masses whose perception of war is based on hollywood are for it due to the heroism portrayed in movies. People dont realise the trauma of witnessing a body blown to peices on a regular bases and the suffering of the innocent victims because of our adventures.
That CharlesDickens guy has been going around Fisk videos posting the same stuff. He's been at it for a few years now. I got messages off of him telling me all Fisk's work is wrong and he writes to please people like Bin Laden.
I think you could play the theme of this show through loudspeakers, and that alone would keep the Palestinians away from Israeli borders. Forget about that wall! :)
calm down there sparky, yes this is great, brilliant in fact but to say its better than an entire corporation of a multitude of chanels thats given us such gems like; 'fat kids cant hunt' & '2 pints of lager'... well youve crossed a line there.
to be fair mark lawson would love to do something like this and bbc 4 would propably let him also hardtalk is probably the current affairs version even if it is a bit deductive and contrarian [the point of hardtalk i know, but still]. maybe email lawson?
Thank you for your reply.I agree, Hardtalk is as close as it gets.
The TV format will never allow this kind of conversation.People a too fickle to watch a programme where people speak more than "half" a sentence in a row and making sense. That's the problem of our democracies, can't make people listen.Media will always cater to the needs of the smallest denominator. If you know what I mean!?
BTW,why should I calm down. I am not overexcited. I am only expressing an observation!Good luck anyway!
i thought u were, my bad. u did exclaim after all :-)
the lowest common denominator can be avoided by the bbc, its in its remit to do so, implicit perhaps but its there. sadly the LCD mentality maybe built into the media culture both corporate and PS.
im not sure people are too fickle, a genaralisation i think. but theres hope. i hope the less fickle would [not just could] use the net & filter into foraTV and the like. eventually that could filter back into the media culture...
[cont]... however, i think our current crop of media studies students are already infected. so its either going to be like as i described or things like bbc4 would just die and hardtalk would get more deductive or dumb down. and the market for stuff like this would shrink and be replaced by stuff like this [or god help us blogs].
i think the media culture follows a false dichotomy; things are either exciting or dull and intelligent programming falls into the latter category.
I agree, all public media should disregard all viewer stats and should only show content, which is in the public interest, and there is a hell of a lot to cover!Having said that,Murdoch et al would go ballistic, requesting that the funding should be cut to the bone,as viewers would migrate to the "exciting" stuff on private channels.
If we want a more just society we should invest much more into public information services (man power),as the market can't sort this out on its own.
Furthermore it should be required by law that every public servant/politician has to answer "all" questions asked by its citizens. Not this PR we have been delivered since the invention of the printing press.I believe there should be much more real information revealed to the citizen & even parties should be forbidden.People should run for public office solely in their own name financed by taxes, giving everybody the same chance to show his abilities, outside the party feudal system.
oh no i dont think viewer stats should be disregarded at all, thats a much more complex issue, epistemic perhaps. and i think the bbc should entertain as much as it does everything else. inform, educate and entertain. diversity of content is what can be guaranteed by the bbc if it just followed its own rules and not LCD.
agree with youir PR comment but i dont think the party fuedal system [nicely put] can be put to rest by your solution.
pm if u want to continue, 500 html units not enuf :-(
therefore my proposals seem to be a little bit not well thought out. The same goes for the ggeneralisation about the BBC. Explaining it in full I believe would convince you/majority of the people (given enough media coverage) that at least it is better than the crony system of today. Sorry yt didn't let me post my last part from before. I will try again now.
Robert Fisk, one of the most educated people on the Mid-East..i love this guy & respect his view & words...he is very unbiased & speaks the truth even if it hurts! i read "Pity the nation" & will be getting his new book.
I disagree, actually. It's supposed to be an interview, or conversation even, as the show is called. Robert keeps cutting Harry off as he's asking questions. He's gotta let the interviewer do his job.
Also, though he's clearly a very smart man, Fisk definitely displays an air of superiority, often talking down to Kreisler.
In Fisks latest book The Age of the Warrior, he writes this factual inaccuracy.
Shakespeare lived at a time when the largely Muslim Ottoman Empire then at the zenith of its power, remained an existential if not a real threat for Europeans.
In 1565, one year after the birth of Shakespeare (1564), the Turkish Ottomans besieged Malta and were defeated by the Knights Hospitallers of St John.
When Queen Elizabeth I heard of this she ordered all the church bells in Britain rung.
well that is not entirely true. fisk does not focus on battles which are a part of history but he focuses on Holocausts. To be exact he goes into detail about the one perpetrated by the ottomans against the armenians. I honestly don't think fisk is a truther but he does raise questions which everyone free thinking person has about 9/11.
You certainly were not there! RF is about first hand experience in war zones, the failure of the human spirit (War defined as by RF), and will reflect on history accurately when needed especially the British and American empires. Have you read The Great War for Civilisation?
Why? Because we live in an age addicted to infantile conspiracy theories. These have become a substitute for genuine education. They make people feel knowledgeable when, in fact, they are ignorant.
Fisk's journalism is full of lower-middle class, prim, self-righteous moralising, but has very balance or objective neutrality, or culture. He's also a conspiracy theorist, although he always tries to weasel his way out of the accusations.
I agree that Fisk moralises, but since his moralising is in relation to mass murder which he has witnessed with his own eyes, I don't think that that is a bad thing. Be it lower-middle class, prim or self-righteous moralising, play on, I say! Give me excess of it!
Never read a word of his theorising on conspiracies, can you give me some examples?
Independent & Guardian? Platitudes from the past. If there are no journalists left in UK, can there be any real newspapers? I like Fisk as a person-from here. I thought his 'moral' tone a way to make a living. A gimmick. But this interview really shows him as a child of the 60s, a lower middle class dude, with the 'look-back-in anger' style of moral indignation. A genuine guy, in that sense.
I am not sure what you mean by a moral tone being a gimmick? If a person is moral and uses a 'moral' tone, why is that a gimmick? If you mean he isn't moral and is falsely representing himself, than say so. Otherwise your air of being hip guy ('dude') and the exposer of lies, comes across as...well, a gimmick ..and distorting as well.
@kuldi1000 "Lower middle class"? You obviously know nothing about England. Guy went to a private school, went abroad as a child, father was an accountant.

2GfH345N 8 months ago

Rossyboy3000 1 year ago
on the one hand, this gentleman is a brilliant advocate for the need to depict war realistically in the media, and, after 30 years on the front lines of Middle Eastern warzones it's impossible to question his commitment to doing so. On the other hand, if he's serious about the need to open the eyes of the public about the realities of war, with the goal of making it harder for western leaders to gain public support for their wars, then why not get a digital camera and an internet connection?
Rossyboy3000 1 year ago 2
@Rossyboy3000 Excellent point. I always despair of people of the older generation who refuse to modernise. They miss out on a brighter new world of instant knowledge and communication and yes, in Fisk's case, the empowerment to be able to inform people of the truth.

SuliemanTheGreat 1 year ago

SuliemanTheGreat 1 year ago
@SuliemanTheGreat I read both Pity The Nation and Civilization. Not only did he cover the plight but throughout his career he has gone out of his way to everyone who will listen to call what happened a Genocide, when even back then the UN refused to acknowledge it as one. You're absolutely idiotic in your thinking and DO have ADD since you didnt even last 15 min into the recording. In here he even said that once his father died THE CHURCHILL picture went down.
zephonlucifer 1 year ago
@zephonlucifer Actually, I did hear that part about the Churchill painting/picture. SO, what of it?!! As for Fisk's books, did you bother to check his references? How many Armenian &/or Greek sources did you find? Much like Wetzel's "Mussa Dagh", where he relied almost entirely on the words of an Armenian Bishop w/o checking other sources, & then finding out later that he had been "dupped" by the Bishop, he expressed his sorrow to Amanteau (see his sworn testimony). Morgenthau did the same.
SuliemanTheGreat 1 year ago
@SuliemanTheGreat Can you pick out just ONE euro reporter who has even BOTHERED to cover the Genocide- who even bothers mentioning it now let alone back then?UN REFUSED to acknowledge it, Fisk was the only reporter to use the word GENOCIDE and was bashed for it. You attack him because of his SOURCES, when you know bloody well back then ppl were not only denying it happened but went out of their way to make sure little covered it Fisk got what he could with what was attainable at least he TRIED.
zephonlucifer 1 year ago
@zephonlucifer Would you say the same if the roles were reversed? Look, I don't want to argue with you or anyone else for that matter at this time. I just received word that a good friend of mine from high school was killed. So, you'll forgive me if I'm not as "animated" as is my usual self. I may be off the sites for a while. You know, we may argue or debate topics, sometimes heated, but you really see things in their proper perspective when compared to the fragility of life! ENJOY LIFE! Peace.
SuliemanTheGreat 1 year ago
@SuliemanTheGreat By role reversal you mean what exactly?
zephonlucifer 1 year ago
@SuliemanTheGreat You can only do so much when you're one man and back then there was no internet or such a thing as 'reliable' sources - you got what you could and report it. Countries would masacure people and no one would be the wiser no one would ever know. NOW if you ask him to write a new book soley on the Genocide I PROMISE you, he would do it justice because NOW in our generation NOTHING can be covered up and people who lived through it will talk.
zephonlucifer 1 year ago
@SuliemanTheGreat Also when I say that it I'm saying not just what happened in 1915. But everything in general - just how much do we actually know and who is bothering to cover it. Worry about that before you worry about sources.

Of course, the last frontier is misogyny. "we" "our" etc. only refers to men. It's always ok to talk about women like chattel.
dendryite 1 year ago 3
To radical feminists, "we" and "our" does only refer to men, because of the skewed hatred of men that has clouded their ability to look at history impartially. Indeed, radical progressives are all too willing to align with the most intolerant and brutal ideology in the world today, because Fascism in the Middle East shares a contempt for individual difference, freedom, and the other major religions of the world. Also, men of European ancestry/Jews are hated without parallel by both.

RealPinkDreams 1 year ago
He calls the book 'the conquest of the middle east', but the middle east has been conquered by the turks, persians, arabs, more than once. The title has a tone of 'superiority' as if this is the first time the middle east has been invaded which gives a sense of glamour and superiority in the wars of the middle east. People forget the ww1 and consequently the wars in the middle east was caused by the collapse of the ottoman empire which resulted in a land grab for the areas without a master
AnatolyaTurkiye 1 year ago
@AnatolyaTurkiye

@Bluegirl4me Piss of you fraud. Fisk was one of the few journalists you could rely on to go into great detail of the true cost of war and name the bad guys involved. He gave the arab people a voice.

Brantoc 1 year ago
@Brantoc Tell me something i dont know, i agree with you.
I hope your not implying that Fisk was telling porkie pies in his reporting. Fisk gave plenty of evidence to clearly show the bad guys in his reporting and work. The fact that he was a brilliant writer or story teller is just all the better for getting his message across. I trust him completely, he has nothing to gain taking on the establishment
Seanyboyh 1 year ago
Not saying he isn't telling the truth, I am saying that when you come at it from a perspective and are strong in that perspective, it is easy to tell a story from the perspective you are comfortable from.
There is telling the truth from a perspective, and then there is telling the truth.
"Americans bombed a home today killing 3 people."
or
"American forces came under small arms fire from a structure, and returned fire killing 3 terrorists"
Brantoc 1 year ago
If a news report said "Americans bombed a today killing three people" then whoever wrote it wouldn't be giving a perspective, they would be giving little or no detail about what happened. I don't think Fisk leaves such holes in his stories, quite the opposite.

Good news is Chamberlain would have prevented WWII in Europe, but the world would be speaking German.
If you are waiting for a leader without flaws, you will be waiting a very long time. What matters is when the chips are down, if they make the right decision not for political reasons but for the good of the nation. Churchill did, Chamberlain didn't.
Brantoc 1 year ago
I respect what Mr Fisk has done, but as an infantryman and veteran, he's wrong on a lot of levels. Not just about this current conflict, but about war in general. We see it all the time, we talk to journalists and think, well that went well, they aren't all bad. And then a month later we see what was broadcast and think, wait - that's not how it went down at all; that's not what I said.

justnotcricket 2 years ago
Thank you for your reply.I agree, Hardtalk is as close as it gets.
The TV format will never allow this kind of conversation.People a too fickle to watch a programme where people speak more than "half" a sentence in a row and making sense. That's the problem of our democracies, can't make people listen.Media will always cater to the needs of the smallest denominator. If you know what I mean!?
BTW,why should I calm down. I am not overexcited. I am only expressing an observation!Good luck anyway!
danben72 2 years ago
i thought u were, my bad. u did exclaim after all :-)
the lowest common denominator can be avoided by the bbc, its in its remit to do so, implicit perhaps but its there. sadly the LCD mentality maybe built into the media culture both corporate and PS.
im not sure people are too fickle, a genaralisation i think. but theres hope. i hope the less fickle would [not just could] use the net & filter into foraTV and the like. eventually that could filter back into the media culture...
justnotcricket 2 years ago
[cont]... however, i think our current crop of media studies students are already infected. so its either going to be like as i described or things like bbc4 would just die and hardtalk would get more deductive or dumb down. and the market for stuff like this would shrink and be replaced by stuff like this [or god help us blogs].
i think the media culture follows a false dichotomy; things are either exciting or dull and intelligent programming falls into the latter category.
regards.
justnotcricket 2 years ago
I agree, all public media should disregard all viewer stats and should only show content, which is in the public interest, and there is a hell of a lot to cover!Having said that,Murdoch et al would go ballistic, requesting that the funding should be cut to the bone,as viewers would migrate to the "exciting" stuff on private channels.
If we want a more just society we should invest much more into public information services (man power),as the market can't sort this out on its own.
cont....
danben72 2 years ago
Furthermore it should be required by law that every public servant/politician has to answer "all" questions asked by its citizens. Not this PR we have been delivered since the invention of the printing press.I believe there should be much more real information revealed to the citizen & even parties should be forbidden.People should run for public office solely in their own name financed by taxes, giving everybody the same chance to show his abilities, outside the party feudal system.
cont...
danben72 2 years ago 2
oh no i dont think viewer stats should be disregarded at all, thats a much more complex issue, epistemic perhaps. and i think the bbc should entertain as much as it does everything else. inform, educate and entertain. diversity of content is what can be guaranteed by the bbc if it just followed its own rules and not LCD.
agree with youir PR comment but i dont think the party fuedal system [nicely put] can be put to rest by your solution.
