My beloved late "pop pop" looved these shows! I remember my mom telling me...that when the debut of Good Times aired and J J walks out the very first time...pop pop pointed and said "now THAT is a REAL n*gger"!!! He used to work for a predominantly black school system, and got tired of white acting black actors. He was happy there was someone who unashamedly played his role of a teen in the projects...almost like they picked him off a stoop and put him on TV
@ bauble24 I agree with You. The comedy that we are optioned with now is total crap in comparison! I am a 53 year old white Kiwi, and August 7th 2011 marked 20 years since the death of New Zealand's (not arguably) most Loved comedian - Billy T. James You can find most of his skits on You tube, and a movie has now been made of His works, to help continue our wonderful memories of this very talented Maori icon.
I honestly love this show! Its funny to know how open racism was talked about then. As well as politics, prejudices, morals, bigots, homosexuality, etc were all talked about and everyone had a sense of humor. Now, things like this couldnt even be talked about without someone catching a heart attack. Smh
I remember being in the 6th grade when our teacher in Catholic school said there was a very offensive show on TV that we should not watch. Well, I could not wait to get home and find that show. From then on I watched All in The Family religiously.
@jerzeyshorestallion Hey Barbara Walters, if you can't figure that one out yourself tough luck. I'm a black man and I know what I mean, do you know what you mean?
@jerzeyshorestallion You tell me! All I'm saying is that if black people would write sitcoms like that today it would most probably be easier to accept that if it were written by white people.
This is pure character driven. It is funny because the characters are so well developed, which is an essential ingredient in a sitcom. Today you just don't have the charcters to pull this off. Maybe animated shows like the Simpson and Family guy have the character development for this type of scene, but todays live action sitcom simply don't.
People say thatthis show was "racist" and not "politacally correct". The only thing this show did was point out stereotypes. That's NOTHING compared to some FLAT OUT RACISTS like The Wayne's Brothers. I mean, White Chics...really? And Martin Lawrence. Now THOSE are some racists.
The Jeffersons and the Bunkers,......lotsa laughs with these guys,.....my girlfriend back in hs named Luisa and we used to call her "Weezy" affectionately! =D
MY HUSBAND'S WHITE AND IM BLACK ,,,MY HUSBANDS GRANMA IS 96YRS AND SHE IS ARCHIES MOTHER ... SHE IS SO PREDJUDICE THAT IM ALWAYS HOLLING.... SHE CANT AND WONT CHANGE BUT I LOVE HER STILL
The "n" word" could never be said on TV today with today's PC TV audience. Regardless of the race of the person using it. TV today is so ridiculous. They are as PC as can be, but the TV is mostly trash and filth anyway.
@Brdj010 Bullshit. I hear black people calling each other nigger on television all the time. I only hear white people saying shit like " the N word".
@Brdj010 I agree with you, and it's the message behind mad TVs skit about All in the Family. However, not all modern television is cowardly concerning social satire, for example South Park, Family guy and of course The Simpsons all discuss social issues. Which is ironic, considering the fact that the most intelligent (and intellictual) programs today are cartoons.
I agree with the above comment...this scene is classic...the interaction between George & Archie is classic. George's reaction to finding out his son's future father in law is what......classic!!
This show managed to blend good taste with some provokotive humor. It's really a shame that very few shows ever came close to matching this great show.
Classic tv show..This show wasn't afraid to tackle touchy subjects that was taboo back then. That's why it's still funny and timeless.Shows now can't hold a candle to this one.
Hilarious. I have to got Two and a Half Men and Everybody Loves Raymond my current LOL props, but NOTHING compares to this show, especially when Sherman Hemsley and Carroll O' Connor are together. There are many stories about how much fun those two had when working together and how they made the writers mad taking liberties to revise scripts. O'Connor and Hemsley crafted a lot of what was said themselves.
The original actors playing the Willises just don't fit here. Kim Hamilton seems very miscast, coming across as a perpetually angry woman. Roxie Roker played the character much better in the series, as someone who was intelligent and witty and would use that to spite George directly rather than resorting to yelling like crazy.
@nicspic2011 You have a point. I got the same vibe. She took George too seriously while Roxy knew he was a fool an came back at him by cutting him down when he needed.
I like those scenes where Archie tries to show everyone who calls him racist/bigoted/whatever that he's no different than anyone else. In this case, shooting a look to George when he finds out who Jenny's father is and commenting on others' use of slurs that he stopped using himself.
Man this is goooood innataynmint...... They dont make great TV like this anymore. And I think The OG Jenny is way finer than the one the wound up with.
This original Tom and Helen have better chemistry as a couple and this Jenny seemed more natural as their daughter the second couple worked better for comedy without overshadowing George. We would have gotten more seriousness and glamour from this couple making it a different show.
For the Jefforson's TV series, they got new actors for Tom and Heelen, made Tom dumb as hell, made Tom not stand up for anything and made him klutzy. Helen was also less brazen.
I like the cast that the Jeffersons used for their OWN tv series better. Helen, Tom & Jenny i mean.. I like All in the Family much better as an overall show though.
I might add...Archie's response to George's outburst using the N word made that scene. The balck and white issues went back and forth all the way, and after it was over, everybody watching felt good...and moved on with their lives until the next episode...or the following Friday's episode of Sanford and Son.
Amen, jpjonesy. I'm a black male, and enjoyed this show. How great it was to watch this in a room of blacks and whites (two of my white friends were Republicans, also present in the student campus center when afternoon reruns were broadcast). No political correctness was needed. We had differences, but we made fun of absurdities on both sides. "Those were the days". I've watched this scene about ten times or more. Even the N word, utilized an a way that didn't offend. Genious!
Can someone please tell me , why some 35 years later, there is not one TV show as funny as any of thses norman lear shows, as a 51 year old black man, I can never get enough of "All in the family". Its sad that there isnt any good writers doing sitcoms. Family guy and south park, and any these poorly drawn and crued cartoons will never compete with these shows. The last network tv sitcom that had good writing was Everybody Loves Raymond. The rest of the shows, can I say,,,,SUCK!
@notmeforsure100 These Black Comedy Sitcomes are the bomb. And i mean that in a good way. All of the Shows like Sanford and Son The Jeffersons Good Times What's Happening and What's Happening Again. Other shows like All in the Family Archie Bunker's Place. Later series like The Fresh Prince of Bel Air Famliy Matters The PJ's [Eddie Murphy TV Series] Yes I am a 43 year old White man. and i love this kind of comedy. I know white people just eat it up.
It's more than just writing...its delivery and talent. Archie Bunker and Sherman Helmsley are television legends. But your points hold valid definitely.
@notmeforsure100 I'll tell why today's shows are not as funny, everybody in hollywood thinks being politically correct is more important than being entertaining. It's so bad that networks will "beep" out words such as honky, nigger, spick, or wop. People forget that Roxie Roker the actress that played Helen Willis was actually married to a white man in real life, and the role of Helen Willis didn't offend her. Today's generation isn't as tough, simple as that.
@notmeforsure100 Too much political correctness nowadays. As a black man I'm sure you understand that the racist remarks on the show were simply to show how absurd they were. I agree with you, nothing on TV now comes close to the Norman Lear shows. I wish somebody would have the guts to put a show like this on the air now. And have it written by African Americans, that way nobody will complain about the racial entendres
You almost cringe at some of the lines in this episode. It will always be funny. As distant as Archie and Mr. Jefferson are, it is a riot at the end when they both raise their glasses. This is not just funny because of black and white. Archie would have made this funny no matter what. I would love to see this show aired right now and see how the nation would react. That might be even funnier. Or not.
@StooGP Yes that's an excellent point. Do you think that All in the Family (if a new show) would do fine today in prime time but on cable vs network television?
After watching the Jeffersons and being a lifelong fan of the genius of the All In The Family original, I cannot imagine this Helen and "Louis" being the final Willis'! Roxie and Franklin were awesome!!! R.I.P! Ty for posting!
i think most agree, this show was priceless then and certainly now, you would never be able to get away with this now, and god even back then it was testing the waters, what great writing and acting
My english teacher made a 'Mammy ' comment in front of everyone doing class. She's italian & she saw a facial expression on my face, then played it off as if she didn't offend anyone. I approached her about this, then later told her too view this clip. Stupidy is a choice, & asking a black person to go on line to look up the word' mammy' was another insult! While she's tanning her skin to have color, we were born with it, then to act as if she's innocent. I have no respect for that person.
I miss shows like this that put story and plot ahead of one-liners and dealt with real societal issues. These days, it's just about recycled stereotypes. This show destroyed stereotypes and make us look at ourselves. But we don't want to do that anymore. We want to hide from our problems.
1 of the top 5 All in the Family episodes ever. Hilarious + deep at the same time. I love Archie's + George's toast at the end. Enemies commiserating about the state of the modern world. Hard to believe that this episode originally aired 37 years ago. Even harder to believe that an entire generation in their 20s has never seen it.

Yet, this is much more honest about race than anything in.... oh I don't know, but a long time.
We in america think we have progressed racially, but really? Try to put on a show like this today and you know certain parts would be censored.
I proposed canceling "Jersey Shore" and similar crap and put on reruns of all in the family. This is from a conservative white guy who thinks we need more honest talk about race.
This is one of the classic scenes ever on TV, Period! What's sad about watching this is that this show would not survive the protests of today's "politically correct" America. Liberalism has turned the clock backwards.
@jpjonesy I agree with you 100%.People are way to sensetive these day's with race ethnic backrounds. Now you have to africa american in some circles. What;s wrong with saying he's a black guy. When grew up in the 70s i never heard this crap.I will still say Black.chinese.ectChinese american will not come from me and millions of other americans think the same there not american there chinese and that should good enough for any race.In terms of the show Carroll O conner is the best t.v actor ever.

I can't believe I referred to Carroll O'Connor as "Archie Bunker" like it was his real name LMAO

Today's generation isn't as tough, simple as that.
don2768 6 months ago
@notmeforsure100 Too much political correctness nowadays. As a black man I'm sure you understand that the racist remarks on the show were simply to show how absurd they were. I agree with you, nothing on TV now comes close to the Norman Lear shows. I wish somebody would have the guts to put a show like this on the air now. And have it written by African Americans, that way nobody will complain about the racial entendres

@notmeforsure100 Actually, "Everybody Loves Raymond" was a crappy show. Cartoon voices, all...

Or not.

Truely classic, I wish I wrote this episode. lol

You know what is really funny, is how the 2 most racist people in the room from opposite ends team up against something they both hate.

@johngray0 I stand in agreement.

This is one of the classic scenes ever on TV, Period! What's sad about watching this is that this show would not survive the protests of today's "politically correct" America. Liberalism has turned the clock backwards.
jpjonesy 1 year ago 13
@jpjonesy I agree with you 100%.People are way to sensetive these day's with race ethnic backrounds. Now you have to africa american in some circles. What;s wrong with saying he's a black guy. When grew up in the 70s i never heard this crap.I will still say Black.chinese.ectChinese american will not come from me and millions of other americans think the same there not american there chinese and that should good enough for any race.In terms of the show Carroll O conner is the best t.v actor ever.
