I liied Strausburg as a kid, but now as an adult I would prefer the days I never got to see of locomotives highballing. My grandmother explained it best - people didnt mind trains when I came here. (to the US) When the gates went down, a train would fly through the crossing whistling as it went, the cars flying by. Now, they pass at the speed of a quick job and it takes forever.
Well strasburg RR is in the hart of the Penn. Dutch Country the biggest tourist trap in the country. That make a huge difference. and you can't say it's because Steamtown run Canada steam power because Strasburg has Two operating CN steam locomotives.
Len, As much as I would like to buy into your argument, I just can't. Scranton is on the edge of the Poconos. The Poconos, I believe, attract more people per year who spend more money than those who go to Strasburg. The fact that BOTH are in or near a tourist trap nullifies your point. (I am not causing a flame war, just pointing out the facts)
Yes Steamtown is very close to Poconos but how dose the people get to Steamtown , not by train. and also steamtown dosen't advertise like Strasburg dose, yes they both have websites, but Strasburg is the oldest short line in the US. and that's what brings people in. plus Strasburg knows how to make money. Steamtown is NPS ran, so their limited to what they can do. Strasburg is a privet org. and isn't NPS or State ran.
true, steam town is a national historic site, they used to be a large HQ for lackawanna RR, so they do bring in that kind of crowd as in the people who really want to see history. But they are not aloud to advertise like strasburg because they're state run. but strasburg, since itis private, is aloud to do that and they set off a moe family friendly vibe so everyone can enjoy it. But i do love both Railroad VERY much.
