For all we know Team silent may have planned some things out and Konami just changed some things cause they wanted that "different" feel. (Frankly, there was nothing wrong with team silent!)

On Wiki, it is unknown whehter they have a connection but Mary stated that she loved Silent Hill and there was something speical about it. Shepard family orginally came from Silent Hill so maybe they are related. They probably had Homecoming's storyline planned out, otherwise her comment wouldn't really make sense.

I have never heard about this ending. Yea...Skipping a lot of stuff; I personally think that Maria is a part of James - she is her own character - the developers talked about her that way - The gamer is supposed to take like that too - but I don't believe she can wander off and live a life by herself. Eddie saw bullies and Agela saw her demons - but James didn't see them their way. Maria was never around when the other characters were so, my mind just drifted to the above assumption.

Eh, the ending is still sad in my opinion, lol. The Final Boss in this game is Maria, no matter what ending you get...but the "Maria" ending is the only ending where he doesn't figure that out and he thinks it is legitimately Mary. In this ending, he didn't figure out that Maria was a demon meant to punish him for his sins just like Pyramid Head and the others.

I agree, but keep in mind that James didn't *completely* create Maria. I don't buy the theory that everything that happened in the game was James imagining things. I think the dark forces of Silent Hill were involved. They have the power to create demons from the sins of specific people, and to draw those specific people there to face judgment. So James may have thought Maria up, but the dark magic of Silent Hill (and probably Samael by extension) is what made her real.

Actually I think Maria ending is probably the worst. We all know Maria isn't real so that means that he isn't going to be able to kill her like he killed Mary because of her illness. His frustration with Maria's cough actually means that he feels no regret for killing Mary for it and if he were given a choice to repeat it he would do it again. In water ending he is overwhelmed with guilt and kills himself while in leave ending he also realizes that he did a bad thing but decides to move on...

Well, it's one point of view. But SH2 is not only ambiguous because he has no canonical ending, but also the endings theirself are ambiguous and open.

Leave - James may adopt Laura (or not - notice the huge distance between them), but will she forgive him? She was really pissed off when she found out about the murder. Also IMO James in Leave is just an egoist that cares only about himself.

In Water - "But you might be heading to a different place than Mary, James".

IMO (that's only may personal reception) in 'Leave Ending' he just shows how selfish he is - he rebuffs Maria gruesomely, because he "doesn't need her anymore". And no one said, Laura will be happy with him. No one even said he will indeed adopt her.

Maria is a feeling and thinking being. I really do pity her, and her tragic situation. None of the endings is really good for her, but in this one she has at least a chance to love someone truly.

IMO making the sequel of SH2 plot would only murder this game - which is rightly considered as one of the best "Multiple Endings" Titles ever made. The same with SH4: The Room.

Maria was never to blame for what happened to her. It's not her fault. She was fated to be at the hands of a completely different person, and would have done anything for him. Which is one reason why I loved Silent Hill 2 so much, where I felt that the so called "final boss" was just as human and real as anyone else in the game (ironic statement, I know :P). It was the man she was trying to make happy, that, destroyed that chance and condemned her. It's only natural she did what she did.

Each game is a separate instance. It involves different characters being drawn back to Silent Hill. That's why the characters differ whereas in Resident Evil, the same cast is used.

Mary is at the end of the game because, arguably Silent Hill is a world of nightmare developed in ones own mind. This time James Sunderland, not Harry Mason. James couldn't come to terms with Mary's death. It is true that he killed her, but for obvious reasons, and maybe one less blatant, but mentioned one. Either way, seeing Mary at the end could be perceived as her spirit... or maybe just a dream or illusion. Possibly her saying everything he knew that she would.
