Seriously, who there could have beaten Saronni? He was too too fast at the end. Speculate all you want. You say LM should have held back. Not chased Boyer. Well, if he did, Kelly may have beaten him for second. You do not hesitate at the end. When it is that close to the end, you do not give up your chance for anyone, team mates included. Look at the WC that Gimondi won in front of Maertens. Maertens was leading out Merckx. Too late, he realized Merckx was cooked. He could have beaten Gimondi!
I don't think anyone could have beaten Saronni, he looked like he had plenty left in the tank. He leaves everyone for dead in the final 300m. Clearly there is no love lost between Lemond and Boyer, accidental team mates would describe them pretty well.
I raced and grew up with them both in Nor Cal and i can not understand why Greg would do this. It makes no sense. He sits on Saronni and wins or Boyer stays away and wins. I think this is the USA growing into the pro racing scene and Greg was being greedy. He got it back later in life from Bernard so i guess what goes around comes around!
Lemond made a terrible mistake ! Why did he chase behind his team mate ? He should have left the Italians or Kelly do the job. Then he could have kept juice to beat Saronni. He could have been worldchampion one year earlier...
@ThepYannist Boyer comments on the incident in a photo caption on his Facebook page: "Greg's actual words to me after the finish when I asked him why he chased me down were 'I didn't care who won the race as long as it was not you, you did not deserve to win the race'." I still don't know where the bad blood came from.
@sjl62 - I can only speculate, but considering Greg later admitted he was molested as a child, and Boyer later went to prison for child molestation, these guys must have been like opposing magnets from the moment they met each other.
