I agree that Cleo is one of the most important vocalist in Jazz. Without question the most important non-American vocalist. It's just very hard to be greater than the people she stated influenced her and indeed all vocalist in the later half of the 20th Century Ella and Sarah. And that's not even commenting on Billie.
Comparisons are fine and futile when it comes to art so I'll end by saying - Cleo is one of the greatest living vocalist today!
@davidjohncooke1 It was written by David Gates of Bread. As well as bread, there is another very good version of it by Jack Jones on his album Breadwinners.
Another example of the superb musical talents of Cleo. Incomparable and still as good as ever in her 80s. Have you heard the excellent My Funny Valentine with Laurie Holloway on piano?
I have heard this song a million times--and i have never been moved to tears until this beautiful version--Miss Laine you are the one and only DIVA!!!!
My music theory teacher from UC Santa Barbara turned us on to Cleo in the 70's. I saw her twice and was knocked out both times. Don't be fooled by the delicate demeanor-she can get down with the blues as well. An all time favorite singer of mine-jazzbaby
Popularized by David Gates (Bread) this is an all time favourite song of mine sung by one of the best female vocalists. She controls her voice so well it is truly a finely tuned instrument.

If you like this, Listen to the Shirley Bassey version of "If" from 1977. You'll be blown away!
