not convinced this is the london gig ... I think it's manchester
Mainly because there is a clip of me clapping after the song, and that camera could have only been there at the manchester apollo gig. It defo was not on me at the london gig !
I believe I read somewhere that Sir Paul McCartney gave each of his children a copy of Pet Sounds when they reached a certain age because he feels that you "can't be musically educated without hearing it." I hope this is true. Either way, I will be sure to pass on the legacy of this entire album to my children someday.
I believe that McCartney said that this is his favorite song. As we all know that he loves and writes a lot of his own music in this style.
I guess in the long run it turns out to be a blessing that Brian stopped touring with the Beach Boys early on. As his voice sounds almost exactly the same as Carl's. So the songs were written for only one lead Wilson. This way they can live on live a little longer in Carl's absense.
Brian does a great job of keeping this faithful without the Boys.
@at90percent : Brian is and was the Beach Boys. Almost all of the vocals on Pet Sounds were Brian's. Carl did sing the lead on God Only Knows, though.
@pmoyer50 Not disagreeing that Brian was most of what the Beach Boys was, but I also don't want to trivialize Carl's roll. He was a great lead singer and I'm thankful that because they are brothers, Brian sounds extremely similar, so when he sings songs that Carl originally sang vocals on, it's not easy to tell it's someone different. Unlike when Jason Scheff sings Peter Cetera vocals.
Wilson really has his chops back. He is an inspiration to me.I spent years in my room and recovered to participate in life, so I relate., Music is the source. Prayers in ancient times were always sung. God only knows..
If you don't believe Mike Love is the greatest beach Boy just ask him. Without Mike Love there would have been a Beach Boys. Without Brian Wilson there would have never been a Beach Boys.
When I hear this it takes me back to the original in the sixties. Sunny days, digging a farm cottage garden in the Lancashire countryside, and my kids playing. They're around years old now.
Oh my God..what a pure voice..I don't care how old he is..he is a genius...the words of this song are so beautiful....brings me back to when I was seventeen and this song was certainly written for me, (so I thought)...
@niquequito the guy is Darien Shaharia (I think that is how you spell it) he produced the Heart Concert in 2007 - Dreamboat Annie Live - great DVD, Anne and Nancy still rocking in their mid-fifties. Here Brian shows his voice IS really getting better with age. In earlier clips you can see why Carl sang mostly but boy, this blokes refusing to go away - THANk GOODNESS!
What a tormented talent. God Only Knows how much pain went into writing these beautiful songs. I am no 59, older and wiser, but the BB music was the song book that I grew up on in the '60's. They could tell a girl how you felt better than any Hallmark card. I pray that Brian, Carl and Dennis have all found peace. Dennis just needs to sing and we all smile a little more. Thank you for this great post.
And miles to go before I sleep... That's what watching Brian singing this song makes me think of. How many nightmares did he have to live through to get to this point. God only knows...
First time I heard this beautiful song, I was 8 years old and I thought it was a Spanish song. I hadn't heard this song in years and I was surprised to find out that they don't sing 'gadoliños' xD
Oh, god, really. There are so many stunning things about this. It's so bittersweet in that it truly is one of the most beautiful songs ever written yet there's Brian--who perhaps had THE most difficult path of the Beach Boys--singing it without his brothers and cousin, yet still going on making beautiful music.
i love the beach boys! i actually live a couple of blocks down from there old hawthorne home (or where it used to be), theres a beautiful monument, i wish i could go back in time.
This is absolutely beautiful. This is one of those few records that will never age, never stop getting played on radio. Out of all the golden oldies, this is one of the greatest.
By the way the stereo mix of this on the DVD is far superiorr to the CD version. Perhaps recorded on different nights?
I grew up in 72', and I can tell you as a professional musician & producer, oh GOD how I soo sorely wish music could be this BEAUTIFUL again! What can you say that really describes the core of what Brian was trying to achieve writing this song. He did what every true artist longs to do, REACH THEIR AUDIENCE! I wish music could get back to this level again, just being phenomenal and timeless. No AutoTune, no computer or software, just their voice, instruments, and straight from the heart. MUSIC!
@Rawego .. Brian did write this song... He is the genius behind The Beach Boy's music. Originally, Brian was to sing lead for God Only Knows but he gave the part to Carl because he felt Carl's voice suited the part more. Brian Wilson is a musical genius.
@quedasobravo idiot, learn to comprehend. i said that if Brian had only written this one song he would be a genius, but NO, he wrote many many other great songs as well as this one! do you get it now, cripple brain purple rain??? :))
Brian certainly did Carl justice with this performance. I feel so sad for him because I know he loved Carl very, very dearly and I think that, when he died, it really backtracked his recovery just when he was getting back to normal.
AWSOME AWSOME AWSOME, Im a blabering Fanatic of the BEACH BOYS/ AND THE GENIUS OF MR. BRIAN WILSON.....
