The right side of the 60Gb model is an exhoust so put the ps3 in vertical stand (this is the ideal position for 60GB launch models) when put it vertical the hot air can escape easely from above as hot air rises from those holes.

Brother, all you need to do to prevent YLOD for good is replace the thermal paste with qualitty tehermal paste and do it the right way like a small tiny dot of paste in the middle of both proccesors and then puch the heatsink/fan precisely on those dots.. seriously this is the ultimate YLOD cure, my 60gb launch model runs smooth and the fan never get beyond the 2nd mode of the fan, my ps3 is quit like a mouse even if i play uncharted3 the whole day, the fan never kicks in 3rd gear :)

I've been fixing the YLOD on PS3's for ages now, the biggest tip I can give you is to stand the system up vertical DO NOT LIE IT FLAT! basically with the fan and heat syncs at the bottom if you lie it flat all the heat rises through the motherboard and loosens the solder on the chips, if its stood up vertical all the heat rises straight out the unit from the top and avoids all the important stuff. Also if you do get the YLOD don't try the quick fixes, ahve it fixed properly, NO HAIRDRYER etc etc

@DonJuanDeMarco2 It's really important that you leave it on the home screen for at least like 5-10 minutes because after long periods of gaming, the glue becomes hot, maybe melting, but if you put it on the home screen before you shut down it's not doing as much and it cools SLOWER than just shutting it down instantly, so it contracts slower..which means less wear and tear.

why are these cooling systems so f*cked up these days, I mean you have to handle ur ps3 or xbox like a raw egg, if you don`t want to harm it. I remember having my ps2 in a very small space with nearly no ventilation whatsoever, never even wiped off the dust, and it still works today! then I got my ps3 and had properly cleaned and ventilated it and still got the ylod. same with the xbox of a friend. is this the quality you get for 600 bucks? thank you very much sony and microsoft

I'll never understand wth sony keeps putting a separate power button in the back of the system. for fuck sake just include it all in 1 button on the front. that was my issue with the ps2 the actual power button was on the back where its easy to forget about it. slim not included with that problem lol

My ps3 never went out on me because of three reasons I sit the ps3 on the side since the chip is in at the bottum, I feel the system if it's really hot if so I take a brakes and unplug the system from the power. Also yes it does help to keep the system clean in all spots. also Idk but I left my Ps3 running for a whole day downloading Demo's it was so hot i shut that thing off! But never got the YLOD! LOL

@spacestation3 its not good to turn your ps3 off from the back, AT ALL. if you think about it, its like a light switch, (you flick the switch on and off) its going to eventually burn out and die. thats why electronics have stand-by mode,(the red light).

you good just use on with its own power source or plug check the fans every week to make sure that they are still spinning because they will stop. if that happens youll know cuz the ps3 will lock up more and youll have to replace them but as long as you keep the ps3 clean you really dont need it ! OHH keep it off carpet !!!!! the good thing about the intercoolers or a good one that works is you play the hell out of the ps3

its not just the spinning its your blueray eye that is still hot and that is excessive wear on the lens and if you have a lcd the first sighn of over usage is red blue or green streaks going down your screen but it will clear up after it heats up! hope that helps
