Brilliant ! You have done so well with this. The vocals, the cowbell, the acoustic guitar underneath the distortion, even the tone of the guitars is perfect. Fun clip too ! 10/10 for all of it !
Yeah, this did sound very much like a '70s KISS song. Same goes for "When Your Walls Come Down" and "Heaven's On Fire" and a few others I'm forgetting.
@ruissman Yeah, there's a bit of all those in there. Also some 'Sweet Pain', 'Plaster Caster' and 'Ladies In Waiting' amongst others. In my opinion, Gene's songs were very cool during this period. I just tried to grab some of the 'stylistic trademarks' as it were. Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you like it.
@janvare Thank you very much. You have been very supportive since the beginning, I truly appreciate that. I can tell you that I just completed another song for a project but I don't think I can share any details yet. I will let you know as soon as I can. Thanks again!
in the studio, what kind of filter is put on the voice to give it that effect? i'm assuming it's a combination, with some EQing the lows out for starts?.... (please tell!)
@caseyforever To be honest, I don't recall what I did and unfortunately I lost the original session in a tragic hard drive crash. I know there's a bit of EQ and delay. Probably the 'Male Vocal 1' preset on my KORG D3200. I'm not the most skilled audio engineer so it would be like me to use something 'safe' like a preset. Sorry I couldn't be more specific but thanks for showing an interest.
thanks for getting back to me! yeah i understand... when you get in there you tinker until you find what you like and then get on to what's next. Sounds really great. you recreated the classic KISS tone, especially guitar tone, and GENE tone so well!!! i haven't seen this by anyone else. really cool!
@liamzuid I'm not sure to what you refer. If it's the one I did for the Vinnie Vincent tribute album, it's out there somewhere. I have it posted on my channel. If you mean the one I said I was going to do about three years ago, hahahahaha, well I never quite got through it. I actually had a hard drive crash in the middle of it and never re-did it. Kinda lost the moment, you know? I am doing something else right now but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to talk about it yet. Thanks for asking though.
@caseyforever I was told by the KISSOnline webmaster way back when I first posted it that 'Gene loves it!' I know Lydia Criss saw it - I figure through her maybe Ace saw it as they are still friends. I would imagine that by now they've all seen it. But they didn't call me to produce their record or anything.
Duuuude, this is exceptional work! ...a jeweled grail of KISS fan covers. I didn't care for the Asylum record, the cover, their look and most of the songs, but like you, I always thought this song was in the vein of 70's KISS. The opening riff, the arrangement and the bell. Loved how you went with the cow bell throughout instead of just the chorus. I was waiting for the finale volley of the word "cruel-yeah, cruel-yeah, cruel-yeah" but those final Ace licks made up for it. EXCELLENT!
@LakesideRocker66 Thank you very much. I just thought I would do the 'yeah' concept through the old 'Christine Sixteen' filter. with a touch of 'She's So European' there to top it off. I appreciate the kind words indeed.
The term "in the closet" normally connotes a repressed sexual preference, right? Now, I have no real reason to believe that either Paul or Gene are in said closet. But if one was a little more 'conceptual' about it, one could take your statement to mean that if P & G were maybe more comfortable with who they really are, they would produce music perhaps a bit more honest. Am I close?
I guess I should have told u right from the start...I am a comedian here in Las Vegas and dont worry.....I dont think U sound gay...cause I'm gay!...If you sounded like me...then U'd have my job!...I am a major KISS fan and I joke around about tribute bands sometimes especialy "Baby KISS"! I think U guys are amazingly close 2 what they sounded like 35yrs ago...It's scary!...The comment I made was actually a compliment because if KISS were gay...they'd sound alot better! I LOVED your reply BTW!
Thanks. I figured it was a compliment. But I had to say SOMEthing, you know.
And full disclosure appreciated but not necessary. I think I was onto you when I saw the 1972 Barbie commercial on your channel. She's got a special surprise for Skipper this year. Wish someone would post THAT!

@doublevirgo68 LMAO!..Nice! People are still saying you "Guys" even though its just you.. You must have played each role well enough to fool most people :)
@compman67 I suppose so. I figure it's a compliment no matter what. I just don't want to go overboard with 'correcting' people. Imagine that. I will every now and then, and I welcome it when someone else does. But it's supposed to be more about KISS than me. But thanks again for chiming in, Gary! Your support is always appreciated.

OK - I'm not even going to try Spanish this time! I got lucky before. Let's see - 1) I picked this song because it always sounded to me like an old Gene song from '77 or so. Then I came up with the game of "70s KISS plays 80s KISS". And now it's all this. 2) Took me one week to record the song, one week to make the video. 3) the Felix shirt was a gift from a friend who was in the T shirt business. There are not many of those shirts out there.
We here at DoubleVirgo Unltd. are trying to forget that there is a record called "Sonic Boom". And it isn't even out yet.
I can't call this the "new KISS album". For me, KISS broke up for good in 2000. And I'm not really interested in Ace's album either. I'm not hating (on the guys - "Sonic Boom" is another matter), I just don't get emotional about KISS if it's not the original four.
But that is nice of you to say. It means more to me than you may imagine.
Yes, I am. :-) Funnily, this version has made me really like the original, too. Didn't appreciate 'Secretly Cruel' in the first place even though 'Asylum' has always been one of my favourite KISS albums.
Thank you very much! This song can be found on the album "Got To Foo: A Sagafoo (.) com Tribute to KISS". I also have a version of "Killer" on the album "KISS My Ankh: A Tribute to Vinnie Vincent". If you are so interested. Thanks again!
I remember when this appeared on KISSOnline! This video made me re-listen to the song. (Originally I wasn't fond of the song.) And when I did, I realized it was pretty good and loaded it onto my Ipod! =)
It's a 1979 Custom. And I just got it re-fretted and set up. It feels absolutely unbelievable. And the sound is awesome as well. Even with me playing it.
I'm a moron. I'm not really a "guitar guy". I have a Les Paul and the truss rod cover says "Les Paul Custom" so i just take it as gospel that's what it is. I just know it rocks. So i do a little research and find out in fact that it is a Standard and any first grade student of guitars could see it. Not me. Sorry. You were right! Glad I know now.
KISS was my first rock show. i was in the 6th grade. met them without their makeup : )~ at the HYATT REGENCY in Knoxville, TN. my momma was 'connected' to the KISS ARMY mafia : )
Thanks man! It's nice to have gotten the response I have but I really made it for you and Jon and Daron and Kruske, y'know? Oh, and me too. And the guy who wrote "American chewing gum" below.
I'm not sure I follow. I know "Big Payback" by James Brown, I know Vic Tayback from the old 'Alice' TV show. But "why playback" I don't get. Please elaborate. I'm sure I had a good reason.
Wow! You've heard of that? And you don't think it sucks? Cool! If I do, it'll have to wait until August - "KISS MY ANKH" (available through Splitscreen Entertainment [plug]) has exclusive rights to it until then. But thanks for the interest and the thought has crossed my mind.
Hey great stuff, Killers Rules, cant wait to here No where to Run and Im a Legend Tonight your way. go dudes, coooooooooooooooooooooooooooool............
WOW!!! I can't believe you played all the parts. That is awesome. You need to get some more videos on here so we can see more of you. Great job and I love the cat camio. Diana
We loved your video! and we had a blast last night - thx! Cute kitty we have 2 too. You can meet them when you come over to play the DVD game. :-) MWAH* Molly & Norm
Yeah, just lil' ol' me. And since I haven't said it in awhile, I also filmed and edited it too. AND did the opening/closing graphics. Anything you see or hear is me (including my own makeup). Had a lot of time on my hands at that point.
Dude, thats killer! You make that song way better. I might have to dig that out and listen to it. I have a les paul just like that, I havn't seen many others.
Wow, groovy..You definitely have your own interpretation of this Kiss song, actually I like it better than the original!Way cool. And, yeah..you guys are FUNNY! What's next?
Thank you very much. I'm in no hurry to do another. I don't know about "perfect", but this one is very special to me and I don't know how I could improve upon it. I don't want to make something just to have it out there, know what I mean? It has to be as good or better and therein lies the problem...
Great song, SOOOOOO much better than the original. I can't wait to hear what you have up your sleeve next. Rise To It always kind of had a slightly 70's vibe to it, I bet you could do a great job with that one.
And define "original". There's a LOT of crap out there claiming to be such when in fact it's just the same old stuff over and over. I like to compose music, yes but A) I do it for my own enjoyment in the privacy of my own home and B) I sing everything in a sucky Gene Simmons voice. So you may not be interested.
That wipes the floor with the original. If only KISS had stuck to what they do best, and didn't get sucked into the 1980's 'pop metal' scene, Asylum might have been brilliant if it was anything like this!!! Stunning job dude!
Are you saying Destroyer & RARO are 'pop?' - if so got to disagree. Other than 'Beth', 'Great Expectations' & 'Hard Luck Woman' they are classic rock albums full of the BEST classic rock tunes! (Not saying the songs mentioned are bad, other than 'Beth' which I hate!, just not rock.
better than asylum version, i always thought this was a bad kiss song but i guess just their performance of it crapped! kiss 4ever! great poat! cheers, jimi
This was awesome, I really admire your creativity in playing & singing everything yourself, and also for not playing the song note for note but adding your own 70's feel to it. And by god, you sounded so much like Gene! I had to keep reminding myself it wasn't the real Gene singing!!
Awesome, It totally sounds like an old KISS track. you looked awesome as everyone except paul 'cuz the white looked a little thin. Also, your guitars are SWEET!!!!
Have done! Check out splitscreenentertainment (dot com). You will find news about the new Vinnie Vincent tribute album on which I do "Killer" from 'Creatures Of The Night'. I'm the lead-off track on the album even! And thanks for your continued support!
KISS best lineup ever was with Bruce Kulick, Eric Singer/Eric Carr era!!!!...Although I do give my props to Ace, But Bruce is my favorite guitar player ever he plays so effortlessly!!
Although I try to keep this an open forum - and respect all opinions voiced here - I feel I must say that I do NOT agree with this viewpoint. The Originals RULE!!! But by all means Mr. thelawler, thank you for standing proud in your beliefs.
this is awesome!!!! more KISS than KISS, you cand find on it all Kiss style from KISS to Love gun. Really cool!!!

If you're going to be doing 80s songs, then why not have Eric Carr in them? The less Peter, the better.

I respectfully disagree.

please, make the video of killer!!!!
alanhardrock 2 years ago
Wow! You've heard of that? And you don't think it sucks? Cool! If I do, it'll have to wait until August - "KISS MY ANKH" (available through Splitscreen Entertainment [plug]) has exclusive rights to it until then. But thanks for the interest and the thought has crossed my mind.

WHENS THE NEXT PROJECT!?
rock4kiss 2 years ago
Don't know if there'll actually be one. I'd need a huge block of time and I don't see that comin' soon. But thanks for asking, honest.
doublevirgo68 2 years ago
Thanks man! :) and love the video! ^_^
rock4kiss 2 years ago
Great job. Next time, use "bitch" in your remake. Such as, "Like I knew the bitch would", etc. Bitch should be used a minimum of 3 times per song.
listenbich 2 years ago
Yeah, I wondered about that. Thanks.
doublevirgo68 2 years ago
WOW!!! I can't believe you played all the parts. That is awesome. You need to get some more videos on here so we can see more of you. Great job and I love the cat camio. Diana

Man that is soo kick ass. And this is just one dude doing all the parts?
Amazing!
frehleyscomic 3 years ago
Yeah, just lil' ol' me. And since I haven't said it in awhile, I also filmed and edited it too. AND did the opening/closing graphics. Anything you see or hear is me (including my own makeup). Had a lot of time on my hands at that point.
doublevirgo68 3 years ago
Dude, thats killer! You make that song way better. I might have to dig that out and listen to it. I have a les paul just like that, I havn't seen many others.

I keep checking back to see if you've done another song. This one is perfect.
Mrscary96 3 years ago 2
Thank you very much. I'm in no hurry to do another. I don't know about "perfect", but this one is very special to me and I don't know how I could improve upon it. I don't want to make something just to have it out there, know what I mean? It has to be as good or better and therein lies the problem...
doublevirgo68 3 years ago
Hey man... i just can say, this is awesome... You found the spirit of the seventies in this song... I hope Kiss can do that too.
Greetings from Argentina, Rodrigo.
KisseroBahiense 3 years ago 3
Thank you very much Rodrigo, that is very nice of you to say. I really appreciate it.
doublevirgo68 3 years ago
It´s a bit daring to say it´s better than the original...but it almost is.
Great job, man, keep on rocking.

Helluva job dude. Quite entertaining.
GdawgSteppin 3 years ago
Great song, SOOOOOO much better than the original. I can't wait to hear what you have up your sleeve next. Rise To It always kind of had a slightly 70's vibe to it, I bet you could do a great job with that one.
haskellstoner 3 years ago
Good music but the Simmons impersonation sucks :)) (Asylum really sucks but you did a decent job)
Do you do any original music?
LittleIronSheik 3 years ago
Who told you it was an impersonation?
And define "original". There's a LOT of crap out there claiming to be such when in fact it's just the same old stuff over and over. I like to compose music, yes but A) I do it for my own enjoyment in the privacy of my own home and B) I sing everything in a sucky Gene Simmons voice. So you may not be interested.
But thanks for chimin' in!
doublevirgo68 3 years ago
Great Gene voice. It was a great remake of the song. Congrats.
ebaroni 3 years ago
That wipes the floor with the original. If only KISS had stuck to what they do best, and didn't get sucked into the 1980's 'pop metal' scene, Asylum might have been brilliant if it was anything like this!!! Stunning job dude!
RippingFleshFromBone 3 years ago
rippingflesh, as opposed to when they were sucked in to the 70s pop scene by 1976?
LittleIronSheik 3 years ago
Are you saying Destroyer & RARO are 'pop?' - if so got to disagree. Other than 'Beth', 'Great Expectations' & 'Hard Luck Woman' they are classic rock albums full of the BEST classic rock tunes! (Not saying the songs mentioned are bad, other than 'Beth' which I hate!, just not rock.

LOVE THIS !!! It ís really funny to! GOD JOB MAN! :P

3 days later, and I still can't get your version of this song out of my head! Phenomenal!!
DaveInOCNJ 3 years ago
This was awesome, I really admire your creativity in playing & singing everything yourself, and also for not playing the song note for note but adding your own 70's feel to it. And by god, you sounded so much like Gene! I had to keep reminding myself it wasn't the real Gene singing!!
DaveInOCNJ 3 years ago
Awesome, It totally sounds like an old KISS track. you looked awesome as everyone except paul 'cuz the white looked a little thin. Also, your guitars are SWEET!!!!
jahenx94 3 years ago
Thanks! I guess if "thin whiteface" is your harshest criticism, I'm doing OK. Rock on!

oh myy, i love this soo much, but the very first reminds me of Plaster Caster. My dad thinks you sing better than Gene :)
paulstanleyisawesome 3 years ago
This is excellent...You took a mediocre song off Asylum and made it friggin cool!
Somehow I forsee the next Gene Simmons project...
Kiss plays the lame 80's songs in the vein of the 70's versions..
Well done sir!
misterreality 3 years ago
Thanks a lot! Always appreciated. And how 'bout KISS reforms with Ace and Peter and THEN does the 80s songs 70s style? I'll buy that.
Thanks again!

hey doublevirgo!! please make more remakes !!!

Have done! Check out splitscreenentertainment (dot com). You will find news about the new Vinnie Vincent tribute album on which I do "Killer" from 'Creatures Of The Night'. I'm the lead-off track on the album even! And thanks for your continued support!
doublevirgo68 3 years ago
KISS best lineup ever was with Bruce Kulick, Eric Singer/Eric Carr era!!!!...Although I do give my props to Ace, But Bruce is my favorite guitar player ever he plays so effortlessly!!
thelawler 3 years ago
Although I try to keep this an open forum - and respect all opinions voiced here - I feel I must say that I do NOT agree with this viewpoint. The Originals RULE!!! But by all means Mr. thelawler, thank you for standing proud in your beliefs.
