  • I don't think it's the case that speed makes it 'better' but it definitely makes it more awesome ... a slower bass solo has more music merit and emotional effect, but this thing just makes your eyes pop out and go "woooooah"

  • matt has the forearms of a god, and lars looks like micheal myers

  • that bass solo i have figured out

  • Does Tim actually play?

  • people say that you need talent to play punk.....fuck you you need a lot of stamina to play fucking fast and wild punk like this guys!

  • matt freeman is definetely not the greatest bassist in the world by a mile. one of the fastest but definetely not one of the best

  • @8down10 People might not agree with you... It might not be the technique that he's using, but he's better than "The Flea" if that is what you mean. Other wise i would like to listen to a better bassist.

  • @MyVlogger a couple that are my favourites are John Entwistle, John Mcvie, Paul Mcartney and Nikola Sarcevic

  • @8down10 I know who Nikola is, Mostly because my sister was together with him for a period of time and I listen to millencolin pretty much when I'm not listening to Rancid. And I can agree that he is a good bass player but I have to disagree that he's better than Matt Freeman. I've seen both of them live and I can say that Matt's playing style is superior to Nikolas... For the other two I don't know but I'll probably look them up.

    -MyVlogger

  • @MyVlogger really your sister was with Nikola? thats really cool. dont get me wrong mate Matt is very good but he relies on speed and speed isnt the key. take a more simple Millencolin bassline like Dr jekyll and mr hide, Trendy winds or almost any song off Tiny tunes, (especially The einstein crew) and I think that Nikola is a better player in terms of sound, even if Matt does have more capability

  • @8down10 I guess people are more impressed by speed than the actuall sound (and millencolin is a tad bit better). And to be honest I like the simplicity of millencolins basslines. Especially Duck pond and Pepper. :)

  • I can't summarize it any other way. The bass solo is straight sexy.

  • "WOW! Hell yeah!! Love Rancid. Been listening to a lot of Rancid, AFI, Hey You!, The Offspring, and No Doubt lately....We need more punk in 2011!!!!

Hey You! is still pretty new but they're really dope. cute singer girl too :-) check em out.

type in "hey you band taking over"

  • tim armstrong sucks

  • matt freeman. I knew the messiah wasnt jesus :)

  • What I would do to be able to make a bass sound like that.

  • bass is so coooooooooooooool!!

  • bass solo was cool but wasn't that impressive just really fast

  • tim suck in the guitar

  • @neoh07 Pretty sure the guitar isn't even plug in.

  • @neoh07 es punk.... no tiene xq ser bueno n la guitarra!......

  • I love how Tim disapperas and comes back with either a smoke or a joint hahaha

  • greateset fuckin bass player in the world

  • Fretboard on fire.

  • i don't think that bass solo is that impressive. its just really fast. not all of it tho. some parts are fuckin awsome.

  • this guy... 0:53

  • Dat bass

  • what kind of guitar is that hollowbody?

  • He is okay, but the best? Come on now.... I could list hella better bassists than him.

  • @warzlox69 ok name at least five

  • @changoLA16 1. Cliff burton/Metallica

    2. Geddy lee/Rush

    3. Steve Harris/ Iron Maiden

    4. Victor wooten/Independent musician

    5. Stu hamm/ independent muscician.

  • @warzlox69 none of those play punk and two dont even have a band name five that play punk

  • @changoLA16 Sorry I was under the impression of listing real musicians that play real music. Sorry I can't name 5 other punk bassists.

  • @warzlox69 alrite but i say geddy lee is the best bassist of all

  • @changoLA16 He's right man. Freeman is (in my opinion) the best bassist in punk rock by far, but he's not a better overall player than Victor fucking Wooten.

  • @warzlox69 Don't forget Claypool.

  • Damn, just listen to that awesome solo, just waiting for Lars to yell YOU MOTHERFUCKER!!!!! So I can run on the walls in pure energy!

  • jesus christ!! that bass.

  • I think my mind just exploded....

  • Ba careful Ladies, you may get pregnant just by listening to that bass solo.

  • @madvegan66 hahahahahahaha

  • Matt Freeman seems real civilized compared to Lars and Tim but he's way more talented haha.

  • is there a bass tab for this?

  • No other bass solo that I wanna mosh into.

  • Holy bass solos O_O

  • i pity that bass, it`s probably wishing for a pick gaurd right now

  • @kidswithnothingtodo It's already got one...

  • hubo pacto con el diablo ahi..... zarpado, son la manos del mismisimos lucifer

  • I really love this bass line. Really!

  • Matt Freeman in my opinion is the best Bass player for this tempo and style of music , Love Rancid !!!

  • Holy fuck! He's a monster. :O Rancid gives one hell of a show! \m/

  • It ain't just his technique, Matt writes fuckin' amazing basslines....

This is mostly improv based on the song's bassline....

And man oh man, you really gotta be thick as a brick not to realise how Goooood he is...

In my book, probably the greatest (in rock) i've ever heard. Period.

  • @RamonaThoreaux Fuck no. No where near the best in punk rock ( I assume that's what you meant). Freeman is good, but it's all about Mike Watt. Mike Watt is THE best.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green Listen man... I got nothing but respect for Mike Watt. I love what he did in Minutemen, side-bands n' the likes, as well as his 'input' for the 'reunited' Stooges (mind ya, my fave band...)

I think you're missing the point of my comment, perhaps cause i didn't express it right. Point being that a) i am sick n' tired of people bashing Rancid cause they made it 'big', Worked hard, wrote cool songs, and unfortunately the DIY Fugazi days are long gone...

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green b) mere technique or even true talent alone is not a great-bassist-make. How many bands do you know of, that you can honestly say 'damn, this is a trully intriguing bassline man....it really adds up to the song, gives it Character' What i'm saying is, Matt did that for Rancid, and yeah, it does make him a real Good bass player.

If you wanna talk, amazing, listen to jazz man.... that's where it's at.

  • @RamonaThoreaux I see what you're saying. In my well educated opinion though, Mike Watt just had better bass lines. I love Rancid though. They're a great band and they deserve more credit than what they have received. And yeah, jazz IS where it's at.

  • @RamonaThoreaux this guy has nothing on the ox.

  • @OMFGRAZORGATOR huh? would you care to elaborate?

  • It ain't just his technique, Matt writes fuckin' amazing basslines....

This is mostly improv based on the song's bassline....

And man oh man, you really gotta be thick as a brick not to realise how Goooood he is...

In my book, probably the greatest (in rock) i've ever heard. Period.

  • good bass solo... far from greatest though...

  • nice

  • what an amazing bass solo! the sweetest part!

  • nice bass solo :)

    coooool

  • i don't remember, but this song appeared in a bmx game, but i can't remember the name of the game

  • Dave Mirra BMX

  • Dave Mirra's Freestyle BMX

  • @MegaSantiago2009

The name's game is Dave Mirra

  • if you want a better matt freeman solo search for white knuckle ride. Fucking batshit

  • i love the expression on the face of matt freeman when he do the bass solo!!!

    woot amazing !!!! ;)

  • bass solo very good, the best bass solo

  • For the love of god stop bickering about Matt. This song has so much more going for it than a bass solo. 999 motherfuckers!

  • hell yeah

  • lol, if he isnt a good bassis, why do I know who he is, But I dont have any Idea who you are, and you seem to know everything?

  • what the fuck are you talking about?

  • Nothing that applys to you

  • Hell yes.

  • wow, great bass solo! and most of it improv, too! :)

  • CALL NINEEE NINEEEE NINEEEEEEEE

  • Punk is not culture, it's religion

  • So you wanna compare music and (for alot fo those people) a lifestyle, with something so stupid?

Religion is the thing that caused terrible moments in history such as 9/11 or soo much war over the years

Religion isn't something to talk about in a positive way, it is horrible.

But that doesn't mean everyone who believes in a God or prays to a never existing individual is a bad person, not at all. In many ways religion can save your live. The people who take it to seriously, sicken me.

  • totally...i am catholic, but i hate the people who take to damn seriously. People just need to keep their belief or disbelief in god to themselvs and be done with it

  • A Bad Religion!

    Nah, stupid joke

  • jealous

  • thats nice.

I doubt youve accomplished anything in your life.

I hope you enjoy sucking your moms dick tonight. bubye

  • Lol, I like how you attack me rather than the point I made.

By the way, that's called an "ad hominem" (meaning "to the man" in Latin). Good thing to know when arguing with people.

    Anyway, cheers ;)

  • Fucking excellent song at an excellent show. I love all the videos of this show. Of course all the comments are 12 year olds arguing over matt freeman, but that's to be expected.

  • matt is my hero

  • I love Lars badass hair, Tim's sheer energy and of course Matt and how he always nails his solo. Fuck, Rancid is ths shit.

  • Matt is really good , so is flea and the guy in TOOL.

  • Justin Chancellor?

  • that's bullshit, he's not the best bass player at all, he can just strum faster than most. I'd like to see him do that with his fingers

  • dude, cant you just love the music? Why ya gotta say that? He is great, yes there may be better, in others opinion. Can you do that with your fingers, haha? If not SHUSHHH!

  • then why dont you try playing that with your fingers

  • why the fuck would I want to do that? He isn't and that's not the point at all

  • because you think he sucks

  • nah he does fine, my problem's not with him, it's with the people idolizing him for mediocre skills

  • okayy :P

  • How you choose to pluck a string doesn't change how and more importantly WHAT you play.

But by all means if you think bassists have to play with their fingers like most thoughtless gobshites who don't even play a bass tell me too, then don't comment on a video of a guy who does.

  • I can ;D

  • just shut the fuck up dude. seriously

  • responding to a 3 week old comment telling someone to shut up is like telling an inanimate object not to move you fucking dumb shit

  • thats why you replied????? ahhahahahhaha fuckin dumbass lick my cock.

  • not understanding my point and using poor grammar to respond is a win, win in my book.

Anyway since your too dumb to realize it I meant that I had posted a month ago, and you responded telling me to shut up...meaning we already stopped giving a shit about what was said and had effectively shut our selves up meaning you made no difference other than stirring up old news...gratz

  • matt freeman is the shit

  • i love theat bass solo. he's amazing!!!! hard to say if he's as good as flea or not. anyways, i agree with tha one dude, nofx is better then rancid, but rancid is a waaaay close second. as long as those 2 bands are still rockin punk will not be dead!

  • I stiil think NOFX is better

  • he doesnt drink any more you fucking idiot

  • so he just can't play guitar and sing

  • does tim even play anymore or is he like that one guy off of the rat pack where he's just drunk and there for show now days?

  • freakin awesome solo right there

  • search Roots Radicals Junkpile and coment plz

  • freeman is the best punk bassist ever

  • @abonone You said it

  • @abonone id say second best in world

  • i love rancid.... but i dnt get what armstrong does, cos hes not playin that guitar, hes running round poking it....

    but lars is awesome

  • i agree...but tim can play like a mother bitch when he wants to!

  • haha aye tis true, he gets the crowd pumped and the chicks love him though so hey, he's got a purpose.

And matt.... my god what a bassist...

  • has anybody figured out the extended bass solo tabs?

he is too good for me to try to tab this

  • *** "Let Me Go" (my mistake)

  • Much of the mainstream aspect is due to emo being fashionable again for the third f***ing time.

They're killing the real foundation punk attitude. Punk ain't f***ing fashion !!!

  • You are so right, but have faith that due to it's nature PuNk will survive being labeled fashion...thought myself that PuNk was dying when the goold old Dead Kennedys put their music on cd somewhere in yhe mid-eighties. CD was then sorta what Blu-Ray is now...how pleasantly surprised I was to discover there's still PunK music being made and supportded by people with the right A ( narchy ) -ttitude.

  • @ThomaSKAptijn Punk dies after Black Flag's last show in 1986.

  • great song

  • gotta love a good bass solo!!

  • Les Claypool is still god

  • how about we all stop this dumb argument and enjoy the fucking good music? lol they are all good bass playersi n their own right

  • lol this guy ( Matt ) is having fun with his bass

  • 0:50

  • haha yeah AXE has it right... fuckin idiots

  • Ok has all of this talk of Cliff vs. Matt come out of lars saying matts the best fuckin bass player in the world. well wtf do u think hes gonna say. Give it Up for Matt Freeman the 15th greatest bass player in the world? come on man he was pluggin the dude in his band

  • hello we are the sexyminority punk band come on myspace to listen .... you will find our songs and our next concert

  • I swear this was at Pukkelpop... If it was I was there...

  • here we go again...people, Cliff was a metal bassist, Matt is a punk bassist, you can't compare punk and metal, they're too different! the same shit happened with Les Claypool and Cliff, you can't compare funk bass with metal bass!

  • You can compare them, punk and metal doesn't differ much in style apart from the fact metal (back when Cliff was playing) was more progressive than punk.

Matt Freeman is a far better bassist than Cliff Burton ever was, that isn't to say he wasn't a good bassist, but for the most part he just followed the root notes of what James / Kirk were playing and through the odd bit of distorted wah in there.

  • man, you confused people, Cliff never followed Kirk/James, he lead 'em, he was lead bassist style. The bassist before Cliff, Ron McGovney "just followed". Cliff composed music for some of the greatest songs from Metallica, Master of Puppets, Orion, The Thing that should not be, revised The Call of Chtulhu. He had a bigger role even than Dave Mustaine in creating Metallica's 80s sound! If you take thrash it resembles hardcore punk, but the punk was left behind by thrash bands...only crossover now

  • I am aware of Cliff Burtons contribution to Metallica, but he didn't have as much "lead" influence as you so put it as Matt Freeman, not sure why you brought up Dave Mustaine as he didn't really have much to do with their sound of the 80s, it was a combination of what everyone brought to the table that made it what it was.

I don't see what any of this has to do with the comparison of Cliff Burton and Matt Freeman though.

  • Also I am aware of the songs Cliff Burton wrote, I have been following Metallica longer than you have been alive so there isn't much need for the old school lecture

  • les claypool is better hands down, hey you guys left flea and stanley clarke out haha, jazz is some of the hardest shit to play

  • Yep, pretty much. I don't think that kid plays bass. Roots and the occasional fifth do not equal great bass playing. Matt Freeman is really a phenomenal player.

How the east bay punk scene, which is expressly against musicianship, produced this guy boggles the mind.

  • Agreed, I have been playing bass for around 10-11 years now and I still can't write stuff like Matt Freeman does.

The bass lines are so unique and out there but fit with the songs perfectly, without doubt one of the best (if not the best) bassists of alternative music.

  • this isnt alternative its straight hardcore punk

  • I am aware this is punk... I have been a Rancid fan for close to 12 years, but last time I checked punk was alternative music, seeing as it isn't what is considered to be mainstream music.

Though what do I know, kids nowadays are willing to slap a label on anything and debate about it.

  • Right. Rancid fan since the Wolves L.P. release and now it's just the common ipod t'ing. Mainstream. "Aesthetically pleasing" to quote a friend.

    How sad... but predictable.

Their last punk tune to me is "Let Them Go" ("Rancid 2000" L.P.).

Fortunately they still have a bunch of good ol' songs ^^ Great band.

  • theres nothing hardcore about rancid. theyre simply punk/ska.

  • why do you label music.. listen to that bass solo!! best band!!!

  • cliff burton was from metallica and he was awesome

  • nice bass solo, VEDDY NIIICE!

  • matttttt freman kick asss!

    greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

  • éééééééééééééhe matt freeman god god god god god god god nice solo

  • AHAAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA what d dumb thing to say dumbass

  • the best bass solo ever????

  • best bass solos ever were played by cliff burton !!!

  • Cliff Burton was in Metallica.

  • what a fuckin idiot hahaha

  • matt!! yes rancid is the best. YES

  • i fuckin love rancid, this video makes me happy every time i see it.

  • nice solo

  • matt freeman isn't the best bass player in the world for sure, but undoubtedly he's the best punk bassist in the world no one can create bass lines in punk/ska songs like him :)

  • people, people just chill out and enjoy the this manic song with equally manic bass solo!

  • Matt Freeman... Bass God

  • impressonnant <3<3

  • nice bass solo!!

  • awesome bass ;D

  • fuck yeah!

  • justice to the instrument

  • if freeman looked as good as he sounds, he would be the sexiest bass player in the world...ever.

  • i love matt

when you look to his face you say the song is easy and when you see the hands you say fuck it's hard!!!!!!

  • Flea and les claypool are just main stream dickheads, matt freeman is much better. His riffs don't sound like shit. Primus is the most irritating band on earth. Unless you can play this whole song on flawlessly bass, or are god, you are no one to judge.

  • dude there all great bassists in diffrent ways...and your just jelous beacuse you cant play like them.

  • Lmao, quit trying to defend them, its pathetic.

  • fuck off, don't post stupid comments on these vids then
