  • I think the hardest part is the hi-hat pattern he does at 0:25 .. its hard for me anyway I'm not good with my left foot.

  • hahaha 0:07 badass match to traditional toss

  • I finally have enough cowbell!

  • Rodney Holmes is a BEAST !!!

  • this is EPIC !!

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hmmm...for some odd reason, my penis starts to enlarge at around 1:57

  • i just love how calm he looks, well his face anyway, awesome :P

  • he used this at the Modern drummer festival 2005, good shit :)

  • One of the most melodic drum solos I've heard. Beautiful. Impeccable musicality, groove & technique. Kudos, Mr. Holmes!

  • his precision and technique at this speed is impressing

  • Unbelievable Rod! Better than ever!

  • Rodney!

  • beautiful hi hat sound.

  • the groove at 00:34 is very tasty

  • What a perfect hand movements!

  • this guy is just absolutely sick!!!!!

  • Very sick drumming

  • Great dummer, but underrated. So pity.....

  • no matter how much i watch this over and over and over again...Rodney always delivers the goods just like it was just as fresh as the live performance. Great groove and taste! Rodney is just one awesome drummer

  • Insane? Insane!

  • he had me spellbound until 1:30, whereupon he started with what I feel were somewhat puzzling choices. I will go back in a while and recheck this, cause his groove and phrasing (for the most part) are amazing, but I wanted the solo to go somewhere else, forgive me...

I understand pot is criminalized down there, kidding...

  • I could mute his hands and kick drum and just watch that left foot for hours!

Okay maybe not...But that is some solid control!

  • Pretty fucking tight, very predictable though.

  • It's HOT !!! =')

  • 1:39 is single pedal, it is the dynamics on the snare that make it sound like double kick, he is just doing singles between the snare and kick while riding on the ride also. I do a lot of licks like this where people always tell me nice double kick work and I only have one single pedal.

  • Father macker !!!

  • Awesome !!

  • I hope no one is still saying he was using double bass at 1:39. . Thats hardly something to say is super fast for a single pedal. Rodney can go faster, hes just taking it easy!!!

  • @jmr2master

Yeah no doubt... you can tell in the mp to f dynamic shift there that he was not reaching at all. lol

  • his all-around skill is so freakishly ridiculous

  • 139 is back beat 32nd note triplets on the bass drum

  • Yea, 1:39 is definitely single. I've seen Rodney do that lick right in front of me b4 and I can assure u its all single. In fact after he finishes that lick, he then proceeds to actually USE the double pedals! This guy is in a league of his own. SUPER underated drummer... Doesn't get the amout of exposure as he should. Check out his playing on David Gilmore - Ritualism. Sheer genius!

  • 1:39 is single pedal. You can distinctly hear the sound difference, and you can also see that his left leg isn't moving.

  • @joshdecent i was literally just watching that part and thinking, wait, his left leg isn't moving, thats sick.

  • HOLLY FUCK!! 2:02

  • That really is epic, im off to practice more haaha :P

  • i like basic beat

i met him tho he's live

  • check out Rodney on the album 'Ritualism' with David Gilmore on guitar - excellent.

  • Uh, what a FOOT. 1:39

  • i saw him live about a year ago in a theater that seated about 200. it so amazing

  • 0:40 thats a nice fookin groove mate !

  • this isnt a latin groove its drum n bass

  • @THEpearldrummer or could be just a fucking hybrid what does it matter he'll out play you anyday;)

  • @Thomlistentoslayer: what part of my comment implied that i could "out play" him "anyday?" it wasn't implied? yeah. didn't think so.

  • @THEpearldrummer why are you soooooooooooo on the defensive side??? O.o

  • @Thomlistentoslayer because you attacked through a youtube conversation. the logic is pretty simple if you ask me.

  • boom dumm . . . dubba da!!

  • how did this crazy shit pop into his head?

  • I jizz in my pants everytime I hear that latin groove.

  • Is he using the Birch/Bubinga kit here? It sounds great!

  • rodney, I remeber the blue note jam nights, and the jazz cultural theatre, I always knew you'd be a monster. go git yours booooeey!!

  • thats pretty sweet man!!!!

  • i need to go change my pants..... y didnt i already know about this guy- best latin/jungle solo i've ever heard.... extremely creative

  • Wow, that was incredible. I think I need to lie down.

  • i'm so glad they have that big wall of plastic between rodney and the audience (and the camera). it makes it feel like you're "right there".

  • wow....have to wipe the drool off my table....holy crap...

  • its a linear jungle beat not a latin groove.

  • which sticks does he use

  • in no time in this have i seen a latin groove on there

  • makes me feel a bit sick. i guess thats where the word comes from. sick.

  • Wow.... Those grooves he played were wild!! Like some crazy layered jungle beat or something : ) Ace and a half

  • What a groove @ 1:03 !!! Love it!

  • Such a good performance on so many levels! How does he sneak in that ridiculous cowbell ostinato at 0:35 ?

  • *sighs* no point in commenting it's too good. *claps*

  • huge

  • looks fun

  • i came

  • thats insane...wow

  • very cool heal-toe hi-hat at 20 sec's in :)

  • wow just wow!

  • I wish I could play this.

  • nice orchestration around the kit.

  • jazz blasts? 1:40

  • great drummer

  • i am so taking notes!!! i love rodney holmes!!!!

  • fuckin amazing

  • coolest part = hi hat

  • wow..bel groove

  • just saw him tonight... he was fucking ridiculous... one of the best drummers alive

  • It's not latin I believe moreso drum n bass.

  • his left hand moeller is deadly

  • Also, he plays it more "straight" the second time.

  • along with liquidglaze16, can someone please transcribe the beat.

  • r u fucking crazy?

  • thats pretty awesome! I wish he did a few more fill in the middle of the groove...

  • its just a 2-4 rock beat....

  • WTF...are you kidding me? Thats is INSANE!

  • any one have a transcription for that groove ?

  • you have an ear! do it for yourself! Do you really think you can learn it better from someone writing it out for you? My experience is that I'll just think "I wonder how that sounds" when I see a crazy transcription like that. Just think: 1 tom hits 2 cowbell pattern 3 two&four on snare, w/ left hand filling in and 4 hi-hat eighth notes.

  • woaah

  • Guitarist:

Holy shit. This guys amazing. True skill and feeling for what hes doing.

  • Words cannot describe that kind of skill haha

    amazing!!

  • The latin groove in the middle isnt too hard to learn if you just sit down and work it out . i learnt it like that, i played for about 6 years so anyone whos played that long or is as good as that could probly learn it.

  • yup took me few weeks, not as hard as it looks when you have the shet music for it.

    I LOVE RODNEY

  • Comment removed

  • sweet

  • amazing, som day i wanna play like that

  • Now theres a drummer!

  • wow. that is simply amazing. im a drummer and i listen to like really heavy stuff like metal and grincaore and screamo nad stuff like that, and i listen to those kinds of drummers but man, some of these like jazz drummers are fucking AMAZING!!!!! this guys hand spee is fucking incredible. i thought i had pretty fast hands.....then i saw raoldney holmes. jus simply perfect.

  • check out other fusion drummers like billy cobham and lenny white

  • wow. his hi hat stuff with his foot was impressive, that latin rhythm was sick. bad ass mofo.

  • I usually hate cowbell, but he incorporates it so well

    I GOTTA HAVE MORE COWBELL!

  • im VERY VERY critical opon players. But i can criticise this at all. Simply Perfect

  • i used to do the same, but i realized when in fact you criticize someones playing youre only hating lol...even if someones good or bad, theyre always trying to improve and are just at different levels and maybe you could learn something from either one

  • Wooooouuuuuu!!! No words!!! Just amazing!!!

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh my God this guy is AMAZING.

  • Finally some REAL drum'n'bass beats

  • Uh, where is the bass? Kick drum is one thing, bass is another =]

  • I thought I precised "beats". :)

  • what are you talking about

the kick drum=the drum that is kicked by a beater

    the BASS

  • Yeah, the Bass drum! You have to specify. Like I'm goin to know what you are talkin' about.

  • the sub

the thing you hear most when you turn up the "bass"

it has a distinct ring to it

    dude wtf

    are you even a drummer?

  • Talk about under-rated. But I'm sure his time will come just like Chris Dave.

  • this guy is fucking nuts. it must be so uncomfortable getting snare drum rimshots when you have the snare that low.. this guy is just nuts lol

  • love the groove, and that cymbal work towards the end is stylish as HELL.

  • he's awesome.. but TAMA kits sound like ass..

  • I bet if that set has a the logo of the company that u like on the bassdrums, then you wouldn't say that because this set sound really fine

  • totally! it's 70% psychological...it's sound better than fine!

it's a Bubinga right with ultra violet sparkle?

  • I'm pretty sure I'd be fine if I just got free kits period

  • are you tone deaf?

  • lol :O

  • His shuffle is insane!!!

  • Somebody hire this guy. He rocks. You remember that great B-52s song, 'Deadbeat Club'? He drummed on THAT one.

  • nice...

  • weno negro culiao!!!!

  • his chops are insane...

  • I've had the opportunity to hang out with the guy. Very nice, and kept asking ME questions! I figure if I opened the dictionary under D for drum/drummer= Rodney Holmes should be right in there. :o)

  • Rodney is a genius with different time signatures. Most people think of 13-8 time as a measure of 6 and then a 7, or 2 measures of 4 and then a measure of 5. Apparently Rodney thinks of 13-8 time as two measures of 6.5

  • that makes sense

  • rodney is tech

  • dude! this is sick! he fuckin erupted after 2:00!

  • !AMAZING!

  • he has also got something special as a drummer...a bit like ian paice...

paice learned from jazz drummers, and played rock

he learned from african drummers what reflects in his playing.

and that's like the jazz in paice's rock. it's special!

    rodney is awesome!

  • I quit.

  • AW YEAHH!! MAKE SOME NOISE!!

  • i just burned my kit

  • this guy is great.keep it up rodney!!!

  • love the part at 2:04

  • This will sound stupid, but one of my favourite parts is when he comes back in, with the crash.

  • at 2:02? that bit is awesome

  • Ha yeah that part is obviously awesome, but I'm talking about when he goes back into the groove at about 1:02, he crashes as he comes in.

  • It is actually mine too! As I hear it he makes some minor changes in the groove the second time which creates a great effect . And the fill he makes just before going into the groove is really nice too (;

  • I want his drum, it just sounds soooo good....

  • this dude owns

  • this guy owns...a purple drum set

  • dis guys without a doubt one of best. tomslayer. chek out Carter Beauford.

  • rodney holmes kicks ass!!!!!

  • the only black drummer i respect!!!may sound racits or whatever but hes like the only black drummer who isn't a r&b gospel chops bullshit

  • in one way i agree. but look at max roach, cater beauford, thelonius monk, cindy blackman, teri lynn carrington, dennis chambers, tony royster jr (who may do SOME gospel chops but still does a lot of awesome rock grooves) those guys are way more than you are giving them credit for just because they are black. and some gospel chops are cool but they get way more recognition than they deserve

  • Also you should check out the Modern Drummer 2006 bit with the gospel/ whaterver drummers and i at first dismissed it but came back to it and have mad respect for all four of those gospel drummers

  • what? are you serious you saying that eric moore, tony royster, gerald heyward, cater beauford, jonathan davis and countless others playing is bullshit please come on be real now.

  • those drums sound so good

  • yeah man tama starclassic 100% bubinga! i think it's the way to go.. plus that finish is gorgeous

  • i love cowbell in grooves it sounds so good

  • amazing

  • Que negro grosoooo carajoooo me siento identificado con este tipo despelotado ( es un despelotado pero su estilo es genial!)

  • badass.

  • why do people feel they always gotta mention somebody who they think is better, akira this akira that. shut the fuck up and be better than rodney..jesus christ..

  • Top 5 favourite drummers.

  • this guy has speed chops and musicality.

  • damn dude thats fukin SICK

  • effortless

  • even though akira's more independent still this groove by rodney holmes is breakthrough. it's a "woah"..

  • actually he does it in modern drummer 05'

its pretty badass, i guess its cool that hes with meinl now

  • akira jimbo do much much better in individual then this motherfucka!

  • this guy is god!!! awesome!!

  • very nice Rodney!!!

  • Thank you for whoever that was for bringing up Rodney Holmes name off of the Thomas Lange solos.I will make time to study all of Rodney's solo's.Sorry I have no one else at this time to add.Keep em drumming along!!!!!

  • wicked feel

  • Great drummer. Jojo and Rodney are kings of technical groove.

  • holy sheeet!

  • thats mad as a motherfucka

  • Do you think if i eat his hands i can get his chops?

  • haha awesome. save me a thumb, guy.

  • Simply Amazing!

  • The second time he plays the cowbell groove sounds alot better with the hi-hat being splashed, just my opinion.

  • I second this.

  • god... first time i saw this guy and his one of my favourites now... extremely great drummer.

  • hahahaha you can see he's having fun
