@baliscotsurf Hey Scot, great to hear from you! Glad you dug the song.
I just got back from Bali about a month ago. Dropped by Adi's and asked for you, just in case you were around, but no luck. I was going to stay there, but wound up going to Lombok instead, which was fun. When are you heading back to Indo?
Hi, I think I remember a "Dan", and I definitely remember Toad. My friend Lynn Richardson and I were there Nov/Dec '74. We rented the little house from Mrs. Broomes that Craig and Kevin took over after we left in January '75 for Tortola and eventually Hawaii. You may remember my brother, a tall lanky blond kid named Walt, who stayed a few months after I split. His son Flynn now rules Pipe and lands back-flip aerials!
Hi Rich! The photos in the video were from all over Barbados, including a lot of Bathsheba, Tropicana, Duppies, etc. The real King Gully lives in Crab Hill, St. Lucy on the Northwest corner of the island, where Duppies is located. I lived there '72/'74. It's where I learned to surf properly, before moving to Hawaii's North Shore in '75.
Yep, Jason is an amazing surfer! Tell him "Hi!" if you see him. It's interesting how Jason, Gully and Bob Marley all have a similar look, beyond just the dreadlocks. I'm surprised Jason doesn't get more surf magazine coverage, since those flying dreads are just SO photogenic! R.N.
Fortunately the real King Gully is still alive and well in Crab Hill, St. Lucy, Barbados. That's the true story of his name; you can't make up stuff like that! He charged hard at Duppies, and was and still is a very cool guy. Say "Hi!" to him if you go surf the Northwest coast of Barbados.
The guy who had cancer and killed himself was actually my neighbor in Bali.
Andrew Broomes did become a policeman.
So I rolled all these stories into one and somehow stuffed them all into a 4 minute song.
