  • you need to get rid of the vacuum advance distributor and get a centrifugal advance distributor. vacuum sucks on hills. sounds great. I like the color. mine has been at least 6 different colors .

  • @kowz4u By 1972 it would be a dual mechanical and vacuum advance distributor, much more efficient than running the generic Bosch 009 mechanical only by far....yes, the old vacuum only distributors were a PITA when the canister failed- but I cringe every time I see a 009 on a late DP with the 34 PICt 3- not a good combo

  • motors like these last a long time but the motors now wont cause they are built for faster speed but not the rough surface like out the bush

  • 1.6 Liter ????

  • funny how much it shakes around when you first start it haha. It doesn't seem like it would have that much play.

    --matt

  • @thebladeofdeath If it were in better shape it wouldn't have that much play...a lot of miles on that car. I need a newer video of it starting on here, that one is a couple years old.

  • @1972volkswagen My 72 Super Beetle's engine does the same thing. Is there any way to fix that?

  • @1972volkswagen The engine in my 72 Super Beetle does the same thing. It doesn't have quite that much play, but it still concerns me. Would you happen to know how to fix it?

  • Well a Volkswagen engine is pretty much a souped up motorcycle engine. They are great and fun cars and easy to work on . I'm driving a 1972 VW super beetle and it just got a brand new interior and it's my high schoolcar.

  • thinkin about buyin a 76 superbeetle FI.. what kind of mpgs r we talkin bout..;

  • *My

  • Mu '72 Super was white, I named it "Killer Snowball" ^_^'

  • I hooked up the heat this winter, with the help of some heat-resistant duct tape, some wire and a coat hanger. It actually works pretty well once the car gets moving and warmed up. Only comes out of the footwells but better than nothing. 87 days till I can drive him legally!

  • see if you can get some driving vid of it to :)

  • Badass car,i envy you.

  • hey I finnaly got a vid of mine if your interested :)

  • oh yeah the john muur book, I love that thing it took me through my motor rebuild :D

  • I do belive you and me would become real good friends real quick :) I'm only 15 I've had my 72 since I was twelve, read about three books on the car and compleatly redid the motor my self,it took me nine months to do it but hes never run better, leaks a little but thats exeptable. I was leagaly able to get my drivers permit october 28th when I was exactly 15 and a half but I'm behind in school so my mom wont let me. personnaly I try to start mine up every day especialy in the winter time :D

  • Very nice, I can't get my permit till I turn 16 next April...ugh. The motor of this one was rebuilt about 5 or 6 years ago...so it runs great. Problem is mine came from Chicago so he's really rusty and won't see restoration until I move out of the house...and pay for it myself. But mechanically he's very sound, I'd love to see a video of yours sometime!

  • Update folks, had this Bug up to 80 MPH Sunday, fastest we've ever driven it. It would have gone faster too. But not much faster.

  • Still has that old "Chuga chuga chuga" about the engine in it.

    Beetles never change.

  • Mine is a 72 beetle. But it doesn't run as well as yours.lol

  • It runs good but unfortunately I've just been told by the best VW mechanic I've met that that's all it has going for it. It is extremely rusty underneath, the floors are fine but the car is too rusty to restore. That's not gonna stop me once I move outta the house though.

  • You can always buy a parts bug with a good body and no engine or transmission and you could drop the engine & trans as one unit and install it in the new bug. That'll probably be cheaper in the long run since the body resto would be really expensive w/ all the rust.

  • The rust isn't horrible...but its kinda bad in some places. Like the heater channels will need replacing, and some sheet metal patching, under and outside the car. The floors aren't falling out or anything. And I have an attachemnt to this car as well, I couldn't ever get rid of it now. And no one else would go to the trouble to do that...I'm the only one into the hobby. Its garaged, so the rust wont get much worse. In about 10 years it will be a good restoration canadate...

  • My very first car was an orange 72 super beatle....thanks for the video.

  • good sounding motor, are there any extra mods needed to install that air intake?

  • Nope...just screws right on to where the stock one does. It's better for the engine than the stock one...I refurbished the stock oil bath one for any shows I may take it to.

  • but i know there is an air tube running from the right side of the stock intake box straight down to the exhaust tub thingy. but i don't see that tube on yours.

  • The hose goes on the stock air filter, it is a warm air intake hose. It is not 100% necessary for the car to run, a lot of people remove them. The thing the hose was connected to has been removed from the car, I haven't put it back on yet.

  • ok, thanks

  • I wantt to put on a similar after market air filter. I also have a 72 (yellow though) bug, and I would like to keep the option open to use the oil bath, like you, but I want to include the gas vapor recovery unit, do you know of any reason that I could not connect that hose up to the new air filter, in the place of the oil breather?

one more thing: how is the new air filter "better for the engine"?

  • My unit is disconnected, but you could just leave the hose disconnected and the end blocked with some tape when the aftermarket filter is on the car. I'm pretty sure that the oil breather is important to the running of the car, so you'd want to keep that on. I've heard that they help the engine breathe better...there may be other reasons but that's the big one I've heard. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

  • in all honesty you should stick with the oil bath, its really the best air filter ever made. the aftermarket paper ones dont collect near the shit that the oil bath does.

i'm still using the oil bath on my 72 super.

  • you are right on the money on that one. They shouldn't have stopped using the oil bath system, much more efficient at filtration.

  • sounds good dude!

  • as least yours has a exhaust mine fell off and is loud but i like it to piss off people

  • Engine sounds just right I hope you keep her stock.

  • Don't worry, that's exactly what I'm gonna do.

  • Nice car. =D

(I'm the guy you agreed with on the Top Gear video about the VW if you were wondering.)

    (o\i/o)!
